Photos from Anchorage's Idle No More rally

Last edited Sat Jan 12, 2013, 03:56 AM - Edit history (1)

I've posted a gallery of photos at my website from today's Idle No More rally in Anchorage. It was a very moving protest featuring Native speakers from all over Alaska, and singing, dancing and drumming. Here are a few shots:

After the cold war, the military left numerous toxic dumps on St. Lawrence Island. Each of these crosses represents a loved one of the bearer who died from cancer. It was shocking how many there were.

This representative from the Canadian movement had a beautiful, booming singing voice which I'm sure was echoing throughout downtown. He was great.

2. Thanks for sharing these pictures.

I love protests. Much better than sitting at home watching the world go by on TV.

17. Alaska's native people and Canada's have almost identical concerns.

As someone mentioned yesterday, they are one people. It was a very moving and enlightening protest for an "ally." I thought I knew quite a bit about Native issues, but I learned a lot by listening to these first-hand voices.

19. I've learned a lot too

Despite having a Native uncle and cousin (and spending time on the reserve visiting their family), and living in majority Native communities in the north, I knew very little. There was a documentary on our CBC a few months back called "8th fire" that totally opened my eyes. I wish more could see it.

You really captured the concern & fear they're feeling. I'm glad to see the children out there, Keep fighting the good fight.
