Supply side vs. demand side (gun thread, for those sick of them)

The gun debate is bringing this up for me. On most issues other than gun crime, Democrats favor demand-side solutions over supply-side solutions.

Drugs? Get users to treatment, so remove demand. Economics? Get money to workers, so increase demand.

The supply side drug response is to interdict drugs. The supply side economic plan is to get money to rich people.

But not with guns. Progressives for the most part favor a supply side answer to guns, while conservatives don't see a problem to begin with.

Is there a demand-side answer to gun violence? A way to make people want guns less to begin with?

1. make them a girls toy

associate them with weakness rather than strength...
ask families of gun owners which member of their family they thought would kill or be killed first.
show the victims and survivors....I think Gabby is wonderful.

2. There's got to be a less misogynist version of that

But, I get your larger point.

3. I'm not the least bit misogynist

being primarily driven by estrogen myself.
But gun nuttery is mostly a male thing, not a female thing.
And from what I've seen the female gun nuts are mostly trying to appeal to specific male gun nuts.

Facts could help with rationale people. But gun nuts are not rationale.
They are lost in their own fantasy world.

Realistic penises, with veins and hair

10. can't see that being at all helpful, myself...lots of exhibitionists in the gun culture....

But instead of saying look at that bad ass with the gun, start saying look at the pussy hiding behind the gun.....

12. it's based on the idea that since guns are phallic symbols...

a little truth in advertising, right?

14. I got the idea....but the gun nuts love their phallic symbols

and would be more than delighted to shot them off in public.

16. exactly, they love the symbols

because it enables them to get distance from the reality. So destroy the distance.

19. you really think they are going to be upset with holding something that looks like a real penis?

thats probably what they spend the other 30% of their time doing already.

20. No actually, I wasn't serious

guns shaped like realistic penises? Truly?

I hope that the time has not come to DU when one must claim the tag over such subjects...

6. It is. They oppose supply side interdictions

but offer no substantive demand-side ideas other than a "database of crazy people", for which I respectfully suggest their membership lists.

7. I also think that the NRA membership list should be the first thing added to the database

of the mentally challenged.

8. They oppose too much.

Back in the day, they were not half bad. Heck, they supported and help draft the bill for background checks.

They had an oportunity to step up and do something meaningful. However that speech Wayne Ass Hole gave; put the last nail in the coffin in my eyes.

Any time anyone says that we sould have a list of "certain" people, I cringe, as there is no good that will come of it. None.

13. Mandatory open carry

Social pressure will stop people carrying guns if they are forced to open carry.

Mandatory time if you get caught with a concealed weapon, a year for a first offense should be adequate.

15. Same we deal with flashers and gropers and people who masturbate in public places.

Make public expressions of "gun love" totally uncool.

Treat anyone who posts "gun love pictures" on public boards like DU the same as we treat those who post pictures of their penises.

Are you suggesting we incarcerate all gun owners?

23. Fondle your guns in private as much as you like.

Practice your free gun love in private clubs.

But please, keep it off the streets.

Gun Love spreads like an STD.

Who are terrified of them.

I could be fondling my own guns as I write this. You wouldn't know.

21. The NRA's supply-side argument for intracity gun violence is to send more guns

Even from a supply-side perspective it isn't a great idea.
