Glenn Beck is building his own Jim Jones style Jonestown

Becktown? Glenntown?

The other day we mentioned that Glenn Beck intends to "go Galt" with a new effort called "The American Dream Labs" which he is building with the intention of revolutionizing everything from technology to education to agriculture to entertainment and even creating new forms of energy.

On his program last night, Beck revealed that his intention to "go Galt" is quite literal, unveiling grandiose plans to create an entirely self-sustaining community called Independence Park that will provide its own food and energy, produce television and film content, host research and development, serve as a marketplace for products and ideas, while also housing a theme park and serving as a residential community.

At the center - in the middle of the lake that is itself larger than all of Disney Land - Beck (with the help of David Barton) will create a massive "national archive"/learning center where people can send their children to be "deprogrammed" and elected officials can come to learn "the truth."

There is no way to even try to summarize the delusional insanity of Beck's twenty minute description of his vision, so we are just posting the entire video:

95. How about a power grid

If he's expecting to purchase electricity from the local Utility Company, I hope he's willing to take on the public cost of maintaining the lines. I also hope he's willing to negotiate his own deal with them without any of the consumer protections that are put in place by the Gubamint.

This will not end well. Beck will likely bilk about of sheep out of their life savings and leave them in a desert somewhere.

Every one of these over privileged Ayn Rand loving assholes likes to think of themselves as some kind of uber-producer being leeched onto by the parasites. Truth be told though the vast majority of them don't actually do anything of note, never have and never will.

97. I'm thinking closer to Warren Jeffs compound in west Texas:

The YFZ Ranch, also known as the Yearning for Zion Ranch, is a 1,700-acre (7 km2) community which housed as many as 700 people just outside of Eldorado in Schleicher County, Texas, United States. It is owned by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS). It is about 45 miles (72 km) southwest of San Angelo and 4 miles (6 km) northeast of Eldorado. The Ranch was settled by members of the FLDS Church who left Hildale, Utah and Colorado City, Arizona under increasing scrutiny from the media, anti-polygamy activists and law enforcement officials.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YFZ_Ranch

Yep, still there, one of many, and all of them are self-sufficient. Beck can easily pull this off and he has the influential David Barton to help him do. Welcome to the Middle Ages of America.

120. that was exactly my thought

I knew people who opened their wallets and gave a lot of money they could ill afford. Those 2 supposedly raked in over a million a week. The sex scandal came first then the accounting fraud charges.

What scares me now is that I recently talked to several people who always seemed reasonable, are leaders in the community. They were wrapped up in the free week of The Blaze on Dish network. Apparently there was some crazy 2 night special on connecting Obama to Muslim terrorists and they fell for it totally. Unbelievable. Beck will feed on that fear and potentially surpass Jim and Tammy Faye.

21. This is hilarious! Beck's fantasy town will be light-years from Rand's 'Galt Gulch'

The whole idea of Atlas Shrugged was for the people that Rand considered the 'producers,' the captains of industry, to drop out of society and form their own microcosm. Galt Gulch, of course would have flopped; who's going to collect the garbage in a society of millionaires?

But what Beck would end up with, assuming that he gets the funding (Not bloody likely!!!!) would be a town full of the type of losers who spend their time listening to his rants and buying his books; the Tea Party types who think they'd be rich if all them librul soshulists weren't keeping them down.

There were stories that the pharmacies would not sell even condoms, much less birth control of any kind, due to Monaghans strict Catholicism. There were other stories that one wouldn't be able to buy so much as a Playboy magazine inside the community either.

I've no idea whether any of that held any water, and I also doubt the management can tell the likes of Publix Supermarkets what they can or can not carry.

Still, it is basically a Catholic fundy's wet dream of a place to live. Monaghan wanted it to be a squeaky clean, Catholic utopia.

He may have succeeded to a degree.

72. When you talk to anti-abortion advocates, ask them what they think the punishment should be

for a woman who has an abortion.

The death sentence? If it is murder, why not?

Life imprisonment?

How many years?

If you make abortion a crime, you have to have a meaningful punishment for it. Otherwise, everyone is welcome to speak their opinion about abortion and advise and help women to avoid having them, but if abortion is to be a crime, then the well-meaning people who oppose it have to do more than just say it's wrong. They have to decide what the punishment should be.

Most abortion foes really aren't that evil. They really don't want to hurt women who find themselves in pregnancies that they do not feel they can survive to birth. Most abortion foes are very religious, very conscientious people. It's just that they haven't considered what banning abortion means to women -- and their families.

127. When I ask they say

They would only arrest the doctors. But this makes no sense. If abortion is truly murder, then women should be charged with murder. Period. They don't like this, though, because undoubtably, some of their daughters, nieces, sisters, aunts and maybe even themselves, will go to prison. On top of that, there will be murder investigations for every miscarriage and people will no longer get "birth certificates", they'll need "fertilization certificates."

Clearly they do not think this through. I can't wait to see Glennbeckistan.....from a safe distance, that is.

Yes I believe this will be another land like Scientology land. Land of the bubble. So what happens when they need to expand because the community grows. Where will they take it then. Will they go to war with surrounding areas if they don't give them what they want? Just wondering. Funny that you have the Pizza man who wants to build his holy land of christians in FL. At the center - in the middle of the lake that is itself larger than all of Disney Land - Beck (with the help of David Barton) will create a massive "national archive"/learning center where people can send their children to be "deprogrammed" and elected officials can come to learn "the truth."

Everyday, at random times, at the sound of the siren, everyone will drink their beck supplied Truth Replenishment Supplement.

with so little of the middle class and upper middle class left to fund the place, it's going to remain locked in Beck's fevered brain. Billionaires won't want a thing to do with it. It's smallish as far as their compounds go these days and they don't much like having neighbors.

So good luck to Glenn on finding enough Galts to sell his undoubtedly overpriced real estate to.

84. Wasn't this situation in a video game (Bioshock)

I swear this sounds like the start of Bioshock.
BioShock is set in 1960, in which the player guides Jack after his airplane crashes in the ocean near the bathysphere terminus that leads to the underwater city of Rapture. Built by the business magnate Andrew Ryan, the city was intended to be an isolated utopia, but the discovery of ADAM, a plasmid which grants superhuman powers, initiated the city's turbulent decline. Jack tries to find a way to escape, fighting through hordes of ADAM-obsessed enemies such as the deadly Big Daddies, while engaging with the few sane humans that remain and eventually learning of Rapture's past.

And that weird M. Night Shalamayan movie The Village!

This Glenn Beck fellow, I think he watches too many movies and plays too many video games.

94. Not a complete transcript, but my notes as he meanders through the vast open spaces of his brain ...

"entrance based on Ellis Island..." "only allowed in with the clothes on your back and the pennies in your pocket" (well, that's useful ...)

he's looking for people who are desperate
he obviously likes 19th century town architecture
"Ben Franklin was 9 when he became an apprentice - I was 8 when I started in my father's bakery"
he wants people to start in the (his) mail room
he thinks he's going to get people like Nikolai Tesla
needs to be self-sufficient in food, and local, but admits he doesn't know anything about farming
Independence will produce more than it consumes of everything
he's going to use lots of wind turbines - that'll get the wingnuts on his side ...
they'll tape his show there. 'full movie studio' - entertainment, news, documentaries, "Little House on the Prairie" is a little too racy for us ...
His 'R&D complex' will be based on the San Francisco 1915 exposition
Thinks he'll be able to persuade people to have mixed (affordable and expensive) areas; wants green communal areas between houses, not individual back yards
bury roads underground
a central building to "keep the books and papers that Tell The Truth" (you can hear the capitals)
"before your kids go to college, we will Show Them The Truth - we will deprogram them"
"a broadcast center for education"
"Rob Petrie help me design this - he put the windmills in the corner just to piss me off. There are no windmills" (OK, so where is your energy going to come from? You said you'd produce more than you consume ...)
It's got a theater - this is basically his theme park.
This summer we will showcase this technology
they'll have a 50 foot projection of a moon
25-30 feet high mechanical men. Walking through the audience (yeah, that'll be safe)
couple of people standing on tesla coils with bolts of electricity between them - shows film of the test in New Zealand.

------------

OK, so basically, he wants to build a small theme park, and tries to make it sound important with all the "we'll produce more than we consume of everything" stuff. But there's no sign that's been planned in any sense at all. The 'people on Tesla coils with lightning' does look as though it would be a good show. The "Tell The Truth" stuff sounds like Conservapedia made into a crappy library. There's no mention of how the $2 billion price-tag was arrived at, or how much of it he thinks that would build.

I think it's his theme park, hoping to attract his viewers by pretending to be a 'noble experiment', when it will really be a building site that he can say is "a work in progress", with some apartments for the workers and a baseball diamond.

98. There may already be a sister-state (town, compound?) in progress

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2012/12/21/178147/survivalist-group-the-citidal.html

The Citadel, which arose on the Internet, envisions a walled and armed community in the mountains.

The project would be a “martial endeavor designed to protect residents in times of peril” and “built as a fortified bastion of liberty,” according to the group’s website.

Members already created at least one Idaho company to make firearms and employ residents, but the fate of the project is uncertain, one member said in an email to the Idaho Statesman. It isn’t clear yet whether it would even be built in Idaho.

<>

The plan is to build a community with a fortified castle and firearms museum in addition to typical city features like a bank, jail and library. The complex would have 3,500 to 7,000 families living on about 2,000 to 3,000 acres in Benewah County south of Coeur d’Alene, according to the website.

108. Go for it Glenn, I challenge you.

If you can build a town with a decent standard of living which is financially independent, produces its own energy and food, and requires basically no interaction with the surrounding economy after its construction, I will admit that you completely rock. There will be no denying it, you have your finger on the pulse of the future.

But if the town requires a consistent influx of tourists and depends on imports, I am totally not impressed.

Advice: I wouldn't dismiss windmills or solar panels too readily, a town built on a temporary oil well or coal mine that will eventually run out is by definition not sustainable.

118. It also features "John Galt" types cleaning up their own feces. I'll believe that when I see it.

Communes can work, I've seen hippy communes that do. But every few days, its somebody's turn to grab the bleach bottle and the gloves for the sake of public health, and clean up everyone else's urine and feces in the bathrooms while other's frolic. Its also often time to take care of the dirty agricultural work that keeps everybody feed. The problem is that the right wing paradigm suggests the people who do this low-on-the-totem-pole work are the irresponsible ones. The responsible ones exploit land laws to charge those people for rent, exploit their labor for less than its value, etc.

The bottom line is, if you get enough of these right wing "responsible" types together in a village like this, it won't be utopia at all: They'll all sit around claiming that they are too "responsible" to do any dirty work that keeps everyone fed or healthy and work on ways to charge each other rent, and arrange exploitative business deals with each other. The whole experiment will end in starvation and infection. It will be a bunch of parasites with no host.

Of course I could be wrong. If Beck puts together a sustainable village of "Galt" minded people, who do all this work and achieve a high standard of living, I would consider it the most compelling argument of right wing principles I ever encountered, and rethink everything I thought was true about the right. I hope he shoots for this goal, I really do. The world is in need of fresh ideas right now.
