Irony...thou art a heartless witch...

Does anyone else see the irony of Americans screaming their insistence that the 2nd Amendment protects their NATURAL god-given right to own any weapon they so desire to protect themselves from the potential tyranny of the Government while at the same time screaming for action, using the same Government, with countries like Iran who are attempting to own a weapon (i.e. nuclear) to defend themselves from potential tyranny of other governments?

absolutely expect will come and take their guns.

12. The entire argument for some of these weapons is rife with irony...

to the point of absurdity! Now, granted I am a DoD employee and the cuts are hurting. The problems is that the automatic cuts thanks to the failure of the "Super Committee" are being applied by the higher ups to civilian jobs, family services, etc. instead of making cuts to the production of weapons...

9. The intractable wing of gun owners are inclined to...

have their opinions rooted in fear. They have a very distorted view of the world. That is why I have a difficult time imagining them as actual progressives, liberals, whatever you want to call them.
I use intractable because I am a gun owner but my interest was not based on having to defend myself in some unlikely scenario. I just don't have that ugly view of the world. I certainly don't look at the world with rose colored glasses and there are bad people out there. I simply choose to live my life not worrying about worst case scenarios.

10. I got a chuckle out of Morning Joke today ...

... a table full of GOP consultants and while they scream that the Gov't is TOO BIG, they're all on board with Universal Background Checks for gun purchase and a potential Mental Health (Crazy People) Database.

14. they also don't seem to care about other Bill of Rights amendments

the 2nd is supposed to ensure, by their philosophy. Liberty? Freedom? That is what they say they absolutely have to have guns to protect. Meanwhile, the 4th, 5th and 6th have been ravaged already and those have far more practical value to freedom and liberty than the 2nd.

15. Nope because this is a comparison of apples to oranges

The last time I checked, no one was using the Second Amendment of the US Constitution to justify owning a personal nuclear weapon. Additionally no one seems to have a problem with a country like Iran owning weapons ranging from hand guns to machine guns.

The last time I checked the only defensive use of a nuclear weapon is to be the second organization to take offensive action using the nuclear weapon. Additionally, the long-term consequences of a nuclear explosion to a society is much greater than an individual with a semi-automatic gun due to fallout and residual radiation from the nuclear explosion.

19. Might want to listen to the remarks by the organizer...

...of "Gun Appreciation Day."

http://www.democraticunderground.com/101791264

David Pakman interviews the organizer of “Gun Appreciation Day” and asks him that specific question (6’42”). He said there should be a restriction on private citizens owning nuclear weapons, unless one’s own government uses a nuclear weapon on its citizens, then it’s okay.

So there can be restrictions placed on the Second Amendment with exceptions (whatever the hell that means!).

they need their guns to protect themselves from...is the government trying to take their guns. Certainly nothing else has them "up in arms."

20. I was thinking about this...

Where were the guns when Prescott Bush and others attempted to overthrow FDR?

Where were the guns when it was revealed that the Nixon campaign conspired with S. Vietnam to avoid LBJ's peace talks?

Where were the guns when the Reagan campaign conspired with Iran to hold onto the hostages until after the 1980 election?

Where were the guns when the Supreme Court stopped the counting of votes and declared Bush the winner of the 2000 election?

Where were the guns when Bush sat by and let his pals and business partners attack us on 9/11?

Where were the guns when Bush lied us into invading Iraq?

Where were the guns when the GOP actively engaged in voter suppression?

Where were the guns when TARP was enacted and CEOs received bonuses?

...and so on.

It seems the only time these "patriots" threaten to use their guns is when they erroneously believe that these guns will be taken away...

24. And

Where were the guns when Congress passed the PATRIOT Act?

Where were the guns when Bush started illegal wiretaps that tracked everybody? Or when Congress made them legal?

Where were the guns when we practiced rendition and indefinite detention?

Yes, the list goes on and on.

21. Sadly, no. Gun nuts think Uncle Sam is a bullying gunslinger of like mind with themselves....

They see the world through that lens -- or scope.
