offshore oil and gas resources."
Can someone explain what Obama means by this? It almost sounds like he is giving a green light to the oil industry and opening California coastlines or something to drilling but I know that can't be correct. This seems very odd, since he just said no to the oil pipeline which I was glad for him to do and thought it was a good sign for the environment.

6. for starters, he didn't say "no" to the xl pipeline. he said, "not under pressure; please reapply"
|
they forced him to make a decision prior to full environmental impact studies. so he said no.
but he made it clear that he's not entirely opposed to it in general and that they're welcome to reapply. the strong hint is that he will approve it after they go through the normal process. |

For better or worse, and in spite of all the repug talking points about it, most potential US gas and oil resources offshore are open for leasing. The oil sector has been at "full employment" for years now - with high global demand and high prices, its basic economic sense.
I think the main reason for saying it is to call the repugs on all their lies about how we're in a depression because "Obama won't let us drill", or whatever version they are doing now. Actually, the energy sector has been booming, we import less than half the oil we use now, and we are a net exporter of finished petroleum products - pretty historic stuff. As said though - good or bad, depending on whether its the economy or the environment you are thinking about. |

16. In context:
|
"Nowhere is the promise of innovation greater than in American-made energy. Over the last three years, we’ve opened millions of new acres for oil and gas exploration, and tonight, I’m directing my Administration to open more than 75 percent of our potential offshore oil and gas resources. Right now, American oil production is the highest that it’s been in eight years. That’s right – eight years. Not only that – last year, we relied less on foreign oil than in any of the past sixteen years."
