The Soul of America- Bernie Sanders

The Soul of America
by Bernie Sanders

Despite such terminology as "fiscal cliff" and "debt ceiling," the great debate taking place in Washington now has relatively little to do with financial issues. It is all about ideology. It is all about economic winners and losers in American society. It is all about the power of Big Money. It is all about the soul of America.

In America today, we have the most unequal distribution of wealth and income of any major country on earth, and more inequality than at any time period since 1928. The top 1 percent owns 42 percent of the financial wealth of the nation, while, incredibly, the bottom 60 percent own only 2.3 percent. One family, the Walton family of Wal-Mart, owns more wealth than the bottom 40 percent of Americans. In terms of income distribution in 2010, the last study done on this issue, the top 1 percent earned 93 percent of all new income while the bottom 99 percent shared the remaining 7 percent.

Despite the reality that the rich are becoming much richer while the middle class collapses and the number of Americans living in poverty is at an all-time high, the Republicans and their billionaire backers want more, more, and more. The class warfare continues.

...

We are entering a pivotal moment in the modern history of our country. Do the elected officials in Washington stand with ordinary Americans -- working families, children, the elderly, the poor -- or will the extraordinary power of billionaire campaign contributors and Big Money prevail? The American people, by the millions, must send Congress the answer to that question.

1. Article is great, but the image says it all. Yes, it's robbery, they should call it by its name.

4. Rec for truth from Bernie

Unfortunately, even Bernie's vanilla brand of "radical thinking" doesn't go over well in a "center-right" society.

Gotta be practical...Fuck Bernie, that filthy Commie.

10. What is meant by "society"

I'll just use one example.

When you say society I take it as "the people" and so it is implied that the people are center right. I suggest on issues of importance the people are far to the left than our political body.

The example I use here is military spending. While this is a sacred cow of the right-wing political body, one might say it's a defining point of a right wing political body, polls show that the people prefer a cut in military spending- and all of this with a massive propaganda machine.

Majority Favors Cutting Military Budget
May 15, 2012

STEVEN KULL, skull at pipa.org
Kull is director of the Program for Public Consultation, a joint program of the Center on Policy Attitudes and the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland and lead author of the recently released study “Consulting the American People on National Defense Spending.”

He said today: “Three quarters of respondents favored cutting defense as a way to reduce the deficit, including two thirds of Republicans as well as nine in ten Democrats. …

“Other polls on defense spending have mostly asked simply whether respondents favor or oppose defense cuts, and generally found smaller numbers favoring cuts. This suggests that Americans generally underestimate the size of the defense budget and that when they receive balanced information about its size they are more likely to cut it to reduce the deficit. …

...

Note: Respondents were queried about “defense” spending, not “military” spending, which likely would have drawn even less support.

16. Yes the people

I used "center-right" in sarcastic quotations JReed. What i am referring to,are those forces in the Democratic Party who manipulate the talking point, that is impossible to elect a person with Socialist or Leftist ideas in this country. The "candidate" must adopt center-right policies to be elected because the people are center-right...mainstream media and their Capitalist minions say so after all.

Both parties and most of their gatekeepers in the 10% are just fine with that talking point. The working poor(which becomes larger every day),people in abject poverty, the elderly, where else are they gonna go?They cling to a party that doesn't represent their ideas, what they need,or what they want in the slightest. This certainly isn't Left in any way, shape,or form and yet we settle for this as we're told this is the best we got for ya."The Left was never our base anyway,we need a centrist to appeal to the center-right masses".Gotta be practical...elections matter you know.

Barack Obama ,Cuyahoga Community College 2010

"Now, we have a different vision for the future. See, I’ve never believed that government has all the answers to our problems. I’ve never believed that government’s role is to create jobs or prosperity. I believe it’s the drive and the ingenuity of our entrepreneurs, our small businesses; the skill and dedication of our workers -- that’s made us the wealthiest nation on Earth. I believe it’s the private sector that must be the main engine for our recovery.

"I believe government should be lean; government should be efficient. I believe government should leave people free to make the choices they think are best for themselves and their families, so long as those choices don’t hurt others.

Cherry picking on my part or is that what he believes?I don't hate the guy.It isn't personal.Guy seems like a good family guy but he is a true believer in a Capitalist system that leaves millions impoverished and suffering while he pays lip service to the elites. Is he better than a Republican in office?Well yeah i guess so, but for many...it's chose if you want to starve quick or you want to starve slow. Will he change? Can he change? Not from where i stand, but who knows.

“If voting changed anything, they'd make it illegal.” - Emma Goldman

Business as usual JReed.

You're a voice of the masses man.Don't ever stop doing what you do.Some of us are grateful for the info, even if we don't get the whole of the text sometimes.Cheers

8. Because we leave them a choice not to and apparently most are not so inclined

No matter, we'll vote for their sorry asses until they take it away or make it ceremonial like Saddam did and then feign shock.
