"Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon" history and this guy was given a job with a gun

As a security guard at an early childhood center. Last night, he used that gun to murder his wife outside her work.

A couple’s violent and tumultuous marriage ended Tuesday night in a UT Southwestern parking garage when her estranged husband fatally shot her as she was leaving work, according to police records obtained by The Dallas Morning News.

Violence between the couple goes back to at least 1999 when he was accused of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against his wife. He received 10 years of deferred adjudication probation in that case. He successfully completed the probation in 2009, leaving him without a conviction in the case.

Ferdinand Smith worked at Faith Family Academy in Oak Cliff for several years, serving as a security guard at the early childhood center.

Superintendent Mollie Savage said security personnel like Smith “are there to keep the bad people away.” That’s why his arrest came as such a surprise.

2. a flaw appears in the "good guy with gun / bad guy with gun" theory

4. Nope. Read the article.

He completed a program that cleared his record. Background check would have come up with bupkis.

5. Why would aggravated assault WITH A DEALDLY WEAPON

ever be cleared from someone's record??

If the guy's 1999 aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against his wife hadn't received "deferred adjudication probation," the successful completion of which allowed him to clear his record, he would never have passed the background check to get a job requiring a service weapon.

Which is not to say that he would not have have killed her, but for sure he wouldn't have had the employer issued gun used to murder her.

6. This is why I don't get why so many people want to limit guns to "trained security guards"

That's people like this guy
