to additional drilling and fracking.

5. He put a whole helluva lot more emphasis on developing alternative/renewables.

The pipeline is delayed and will now require a whole new environmental impact study. Meanwhile, TransCanada is getting heat at home and the whole idea may never make any economic sense. I think it was a throwaway line to show that he's willing to explore all energy options...but that dpoesn't mean he's promoting liquid sandpaper as a good option.

6. When did he say he supported fracking?

What he said was he supported full disclosure of what chemicals were being pumped into the ground.

10. yes that was the part.

He said he supported natural gas development, but he's going to make them disclose the chemicals. That's good, I want them to tell us want the chemicals are. But I think alot of people have been trying to put a hold on the fracking until it can be shown to be safe. Am I wrong ? Did I misunderstand him? By the time we analyze all these chemicals, they could screw up our water for the next hundred years.

We have a supply of natural gas that can last America nearly one hundred years, and my Administration will take every possible action to safely develop this energy. Experts believe this will support more than 600,000 jobs by the end of the decade. And I'm requiring all companies that drill for gas on public lands to disclose the chemicals they use. America will develop this resource without putting the health and safety of our citizens at risk.

I take this as support for fracking. Am I wrong?

32. Sounded to me like he supports drilling for gas but he wants it done safely

Disclosure of chemicals used in the process will be required so that the safety issues can be assessed.

In other words, he doesn't want any of the gas drilling setting off earthquakes!

35. I have been complaining about fracking since I first learned about it

I also live right outside DC, and the earthquake we recently had might have been caused by fracking. The Washington Monument to this day remains damaged and closed.

But he had a line in there about none of this should be done at the expense of clean water (and air, too, I believe).

I was simply answering a question. I also do not support increased domestic oil drilling.

38. How? He says frack away, right?

A new poll of Ohio voters shows 72 percent think the practice should be stopped until more study of it can be done.
A new poll of Ohioans shows that more than seven in ten want the controversial practice of hydro-fracking stopped until more study of it can be done, according to a Quinnipiac University survey released this morning.

The first statewide poll on hydrofracking--the practice of pumping millions of gallons of chemical-laced water into shale deposits to crack open oil and natural gas deposits far below the earth's crust--shows Ohioans anxious about its impact on the environment. By a margin of 72-23, Ohioans say the practice should be stopped until further study.

http://www.nofrackohio.com/news/2012/1/20/new-quinnipiac-poll-ohioans-strongly-oppose-hydro-fracking-u.html

I think fracking should be stopped until it can be shown it is not poisoning our drinking water.

The president wants keep on fracking at full pace while requiring the gas companies to start disclosing their chemicals.
It the mean time if you are getting poisoned, you lose again.

The president said they have to actually disclose what chemicals they are using, and he also said he supports clean water, so now everything is fine.

that's not to say that the Dems aren't better than the Repubs - they are - but the Dems have become so corrupt we are in a horrible spot right now. #OCCUPY seems the best solution. his warmongering shit talk about Iran is enough to make me turn this shit off.

19. Like we trust BP

If they were to have another gusher, the clean up solution would be the same. BP can't promise us they will ALWAYS be safe. And I don't trust fracking to be honest. Let's see some proof that BP is ready for another explosion and clean up. Oh they can't. Live with it. Oh and come visit the Gulf. It's "safe" now. LOL!

23. If the President says fracking is safe, the President is full of shit.

Sorry if that hurts anybody's feelings.

the fracking chemicals and the waste are already toxic.

So if he says it is required to be safe, I have no idea what he is talking about, since this drilling is EXEMPT FROM THE CLEAN WATER ACT. and the Safe Drinking Water Act. There is nothing that has been shown to be safe with this deep gas drilling.
Quite the opposite.

This is election year politics. He needs to be seen as trying to decrease our dependence on foreign oil and this is one way to do that.

28. He needs to be seen as not poisoning our water. That's just as good a political argument.

Actually it's a better argument if you're running in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia.

The real politics is that the gas companies throw a lot of money at politicians.
And the people whose water is screwed up, they don't have any lobbyists.
We lose again.

They should have had to prove it was safe BEFORE they started drilling.
They should stop pumping until they can prove it is safe.

30. It didn't seem that way

He seemed open to the practice, but I did enjoy his statement that he'll push to discover the chemicals involved. If he does this, and provides for it to be made public, he'll have done very well. Even if it's not possible, politically, to ban or limit the practice, I think that giving its opponents real information will be beneficial.

that part bothered me, too, as well as the offshore drilling part. Many of us up here are fighting tooth and nail to stop the planned offshore exploration in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas.
