1. No

We have good neighbors and the market hasn't recovered enough for us to sell and move to a larger home. We sure couldn't sell our place if Rambo lived next door instead of an accountant.

With high explosive targets.

I just want to ask every person who feels "high explosive targets" are a necessary part of life...

What happened to you? What made you feel the need to destroy?

I like blowing things up. I also like growing heirloom tomatoes.

I just want to ask every person who feels "high explosive targets" are a necessary part of life...

If you'll just point out where you think I said they are a necessary part of life, maybe I can answer you.

Necessary may have been OTT... but still WHY?

86. It's like golf

Shooting is a very skilled sport. It requires a lot of emotional and psychological control, the ability to concentrate intensely, and a high degree of control over your body.

Also, guys just like to see things blow up. Have you ever head of pumpkin guns?

Don't ask me why people do this. They just do.

87. No it's not like golf.

And I am a guy let me tell you from my personal experience we *all* don't like to see stuff blow up so that is a generalization.

But if saying "it's like golf" makes you feel better go for it. Last time I checked golf rarely killed anyone.

On Edit: I am done I don't feel like a war so you can make your response and we can go out separate ways.

92. An expensive and often frustrating sport where you spend hours and hours propelling

small hard objects toward a distant tiny target, and people have no idea why you'd want to do it in the first place...

97. Exactly

But it seems to be addictive for some people.

I don't criticize, because I kind of get withdrawal symptoms if I don't program for a while. I like writing code. It's addictive for me.

Neither sport has anything to do with violence, as far as I can see.

"Golf is a game whose goal is to hit a small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the task."

125. When you are shooting at soda can size targets at 500 or 600 yards, or more, a SMALL explosive...

...charge give you positive feedback that you have in fact hit a target. That's what explosive targets are used for.

BTW it's perfectly legal. The explosive material is shipped as two unmixed components through regular US mail. It's not even subject to hazardous material regulations. As long as you mix the two components on site and don't transport them in a vehicle, it's all OK even here in California.

When you want to engage in your hobby, you go to the gange, retrieve your gun, shoot to your hearts content but when you leave...the gun stays.

had those nifty electric tracks that take the target down range for you, a snack bar, and one of those giant interactive screen thingies for training cops. Oh, and it had a picture of Robert E. Lee on the wall.

Do you really want those guys in charge of an arsenal full of other people's guns?

303. If I made one I am sorry.

I am VERY anti gun.

- I do not own one.
- I do not think people should own them.
- There is no point it is 2012. Our society should be better than guns.

All I was saying in the previous post is, although apparently poorly worded, At what point does the 2nd amendment stop... these crazy people who say any kind of gun is okay then why is it not okay to have a grenade launcher?!?! Nothing should be allowed.

That's my viewpoint. Sorry if I came across "wakadoodle"... but I think even I get frustrated sometimes.

270. ugh...

No, please don't do that. Even land in the desert is owned by someone and you'd be breaking several laws by trespassing on private property, as well as the illegal discharge of a firearm.

I live in a rural desert community and there are already 3 bullet holes in my barn from people like you who drive out here to shoot, thinking they are in the wilderness. They weren't responsible gun owners, they had no thought or concern about how far their bullets travel or the damage they did, because they mistakenly believed this is nothing but an unpopulated desert.

So far only my barn has been hit, but many of my neighbors haven't been so lucky. Stray bullets have gone through walls, windows, cars, and killed or injured pets and livestock. The use of "explosive targets" in an area of tinder dry brush has started numerous, fast raging fires that have burned fields, outbuildings, fences and farm equipment, costing not only the owners, but the tax payers who pay for the emergency response from police and fire services.

Please, be a responsible gun owner and go to the shooting range, pay the fees, and fire off your big guns safely... not in my backyard.

112. Same here in GA as it was in Lousiana.

I grew up around responsible weapons owners. My stepfather, a decorated WWII Army Ranger, taught me to shoot using an old carbine, when I was 10-11.

Today I've friends who enjoy target shooting and collecting weapons. If I could afford the ammo I'd go shooting more often than just enough to keep my skills from 'rusting'. Owning and knowing how to use weapon could be the difference between being a victim or a survivor.

One time, my upstairs neighbor's apartment got shot at in the middle of the night. I knew lots of people who packed a gun. It was normal. But I don't ever remember anyone with an automatic weapon or shooting sprees (just your average biker gang wars).

118. Interesting comparison

between your numbers and these..

Hawaii is ranked 36 for violent crime..not bad, I wonder about the rest?

Delaware #7 most violent crime.
Florida #4
Cali #14
Maryland #8
Illinois #13
New York #22
Conn. #37
RI #44
MA #20
NJ #26

At first glance, as a non-statistician, it looks not to matter..from a violent crime standpoint anyway..

1. Wyoming - 59.7%... 43rd highest violent crime
2. Alaska - 57.8%... 23rd
3. Montana - 57.7%... 41
4. South Dakota - 56.6%...46
5. West Virginia - 55.4%... 39
6. Mississippi - 55.3%... 31
6. Idaho - 55.3% ... 42
6. Arkansas - 55.3%... 11
9. Alabama - 51.7% ... 23

Hmmm...maybe something can be garnered from this comparison...seems one may be less likely to be victimized living in the highest gun owning states than in the lowest, eh?

Oh, I forgot the link earlier..

people, I hope. Because tough gun regulations are safest for the majority of people who live in mid-sized towns and cities.

I would like to see laws, however, that accommodate the different needs of people living in areas of different population density.

Some Americans need to be able to defend against bears. Most of us don't. That is why I prefer laws that are appropriate to specific areas. Is it that much trouble to leave the gun at home when going to a city or mid-sized town? I should think not.

Here's a nice new program that teaches young people how to shoot "a man sized target"

Who we are and what we're about: The Appleseed Program is designed to take you from being a simple rifle owner to being a true rifleman. All throughout American history, the rifleman has been defined as a marksman capable of hitting a man-sized targets from 500 yards away no ifs, ands or buts about it. This 500-yard range is traditionally known as "the rifleman's quarter-mile;" a rifleman can hit just about any target he can see. This skill was particularly evident in the birth of our country, and was the difference in winning the Revolutionary War.

Might own one of these, doesn't mean they are going to "SNAP" as you stated in your choices. I don't own guns, but I do own these Nihon To, which I love, as they are part of my family heritage. They have a history and were most certainly used and worn by my ancestors. They are not just out for anyone to touch, but packed away, wrapped in cotton and placed in fine bamboo cases. I have only ever taken them out once to be displayed at our local "Sakura Matsuri" Cherry Blossom Festival (pictured) and that was a few years ago. It was too much trouble to remove them again, and so they sit in boxes, protected more or less by the elements.

Photos because it was very unlikely I would ever un pack them again, and they are kept well and safe. I had to get help from another friend who works with the Japanese Sword Society to make sure they were packed correctly. The blades had to be powdered so as to not allow moisture to seep onto the blade and cause rust. These go back to the 1600's and have been oiled and taken care of by each of my many ancestors. Since I am the only child of my father, he chose to give them to me, after my taking many years of Kendo and Kenjitsu.

The Sakura Matsuri is a very special event here in Japan town and held every year around April or March when the Cherry Blossoms are expected to be at their peak. Many, items of Japanese tradition are on display for a curious public.

Some of those traditions include the maintenance of Bonsai plants

Paper Dolls known as washi-ningyo

displays of Japanese armor

traditional Kimono display
?t=1207006921

As well as sampling Sake

and Traditional Dance

Sakura Matsuri is a festival of all things Japanese and is often shared openly with all those interested in our culture and heritage. It is one of the more famous events held in San Francisco annually.

In my culture, (I am Nuhndta Nooch, Northern Ute from eastern Utah) we are very reluctant to display our most traditional and sacred things because of the long history of abuse and oppression, as well as the rampant exploitation and desecration that is common today. Just to be clear, I wasn't making any sort of judgement on you for sharing with us

When is this festival? I am currently living in the Bay Area while I finish grad school and I would be interested in attending. I have made friends with a couple of people from Japan, and I have found them to be kindred spirits in many ways, similar to my own people in their values and ways of seeing the world.

My husband leaves his out, leaning against the wall in the hall.

His are not the heirlooms yours are - most of his are costume swords, like his Gandalf replica sword. But they still freak people out to see them sitting around like his walking sticks.

Of course, if someone got into the house, the swords would be right there, handy to use.

Little squirt hauled butt for two blocks after I quit chasing him. That's how the cops ID him - the entire neighborhood saw him running away. We'd had a series of breakins - but not once they realized I was ready to whoop them with whatever was at hand.

16 year old kids terrified of a short, overweight woman. Pitiful. Of course, back them I could have whooped them thoroughly - I trained horses and was in shape despite being overweight. I could out run the kids, too.

I can imagine that bamboo shinai would hurt. Back when we did SCA, we used rattan fake swords and they hurt a lot. Bamboo, being more flexible would be much worse!

Retired from doing Kendo, mostly because its so expensive. I still have two sets of Shinai here, and every time I pick one up, and play with it, the memory of being struck on hands (despite wearing calf skin leather gloves) still lurks. I would come home with bruises on my hands, and my mother would look to my father and say, must she continue? I would tell her I love it.. but I had to figure out a way of avoiding that hand blow. When someone is very fast, sometimes you just have to endure it. It eventually proved to be a way to win, when you are striking there so often, your opponent can't even properly hold their Shinai.

172. That kid and his friends were given a second chance and blew it

We were persuaded to accept compensation (payment to repair the door and window they broke to enter the house) and to not press charges, though the charges were not actually dropped.

A couple of years later the same kids burned down the elementary school in that small town and were again stupid enough to get caught. Because of the past charges (our burglary) they were not allowed to plead out and the oldest of them were charged as adults. Sigh.

9. Where the hell would one move to avoid having such a neighbor?

Why do you care what your neighbor has in their house and why would you move anyway? Is there some odd statistical likelihood that they pose a particular threat to your well being or are you freaking out about nothing in the big picture? Would you be considering moving in this market because of a deer rifle? How about a shotgun? How about a pistol?

Are "Assault Clips" like tactical shears or something? Do they have a flashlight mount?

Both had private firearm collections that included assault style rifles and semi-auto pistols with a magazine capacity of more than 10 rounds. Both men had a law enforcement background.

16. A friend of mine is in that situation. Her neighbors are criminals. She wants to move.

Her neighborhood was really safe until a mother and her 20 year old twins rented the private home across the street from hers. From that point on, neighbors started noticing missing items in their cars and no longer could leave their doors unlocked. One time my friend witnessed the entire household (including their visitors) get arrested. She knows they have a gun because she saw one of the sons run to the corner and fire off a few rounds when trying to intimidate someone. The sons constantly ring her door and ask if they can mow her lawn or come inside. One time they put a condom in her mail box. One son wears all black and stands outside in the dark looking into the neighbors' windows. Her sister visited one weekend, and was walking around naked after taking a shower. She noticed with horror that one of the boys was outside, looking directly at her through the bay window. She saw them steal her neighbor's power meter. She witnessed them "bike" jack some people as well. She's called the police on them several times and the entire community is in fear and many are making plans to move, as the people who own the rental home refuse to evict them.

In response, she's going to move, but in the meantime she's installing thousands of dollars worth of security upgrades to reinforce the glass in her home. She also bought a gun and will be taking lessons on how to use it and I'm going with her when she goes. I can't remember what type of gun it is, but it's not a shotgun.

21. It's unfortunate that you equate a neighbor lawfully owning a firearm with one being a criminal

Why do you think that way? ETA it's unfortunate that you have a problem household in your neighborhood. I've had that kind of situation in my life before, but never did I conflate criminal behavior with someone owning any particular object and not misusing it.

I think reply #16 isn't even responsive to the question raised in the OP.

Please explain yourself.

25. I didn't mean to, but now that you bring it up

I think assault rifles/weapons are the weapon of choice for criminals and people who need psychiatric help. If I found out a neighbor had one, and we had an interaction that made me feel uncomfortable, I'd probably do exactly what my friend did and buy a gun of my own. I wouldn't be able to match the fire power, but maybe I could strategically position myself to catch him by surprise. But again, that's *only* if the person indicated in some way that he was a threat.

28. Let's assume that your first sentence is true, even though it's not because handguns are really...

...the weapons of choice for violent criminals.

Even if your assumption were true, it would not follow logically that anyone who owns a modern semiautomatic rifle is likely to be a criminal or mentally ill. In fact crimes committed with rifles in general are relatively rare, less than 3% of homicides IIRC.

I suspect that your thought processes have been shaped by misleading vividness in media reporting.

19. I've seen my neighbor carrying guns to his truck

I know he has an AR-15 variant and what appeared to be a tactical Remington 870 shotgun. He and his wife seem normal, no worries. I would be suspicious and maybe keep an eye out if they acted erratically or dangerously though.

I'm a gunowner, have a concealed carry permit, lifelong hunter, and ex-military myself though so I'm very used to being around and seeing firearms. Plus I'm in Florida, everyone here is armed. It's strange if someone doesn't own a gun here.

My liberal, diehard Democrat boss was telling me about the new gun safe he got over the holidays, very proud of it. He was a bit antigun for years and is now convinced society/economy is going to collapse so he's decided he needs to be armed, has a 12 gauge and a .44 so far if I remember right.

to come back from christmas vacation to show me the .44 magnum he got for christmas. We are in Florida too. He and I and a couple other people in our department also have CCW but I believe I'm the only registered Democrat.

At the risk of taking this whole thread seriously I will agree that it's not the guns that would make me nervous - it would be the behavior of my neighbors. I wish I could afford to live next door to my boss. His guns wouldn't bother me one bit. My current neighbors are all good people though so I doubt I'd worry about them if I knew anything about their armaments.

I guess I feel bad for anyone that lives near someone skeevy enough to make them nervous. If that were the case for me I would be looking to move whether I knew of guns in their homes or not.

Way back in the 1970s, the neighborhood we lived in SW ATL became very dangerous, very quickly. People tried to break into our home, and my dear tabby was rope strangled and put on my doorstep. *cry*

We got the message to get out of Dodge, and moved from an area I'd known well and lived in for years. We moved out quickly at great expense to ourselves. Avoiding dangerous situations is the first resort, as any gun owner knows.

One of my dearest friends, a physician, is a veteran who used to win shooting competitions. I wish HE lived next door. But I'm in a fairly safe neighborhood.

As an example, I only have two types of clips: Moon-clips for a S&W 625 JM and stripper clips for a M1A1.

Since there is no such thing as "assault clips," the gun-grabbers can make as much noise as they want about prohibiting "assault clips."

Major Frank Burns? Is that you?
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=2157364

REASON FOR ALERT:

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See Community Standards.)

ALERTER'S COMMENTS:

Frank Burns?

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Tue Jan 8, 2013, 06:56 PM, and the Jury voted 0-6 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Oh please!~
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Frank Burns.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Burns#Frank_Burns
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Major (later Lieutenant Colonel) Franklin Delano Marion "Frank" Burns, M.D. (also known as "Ferret Face" is a fictional character in the M*A*S*H film and television series. Burns first appeared in the original M*A*S*H novel by Richard Hooker, where he had the rank of captain. The character was then portrayed in the film by Robert Duvall (as a major), and in the subsequent television series by Larry Linville as a major (who is promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after his departure from the series).
In the original novel, Captain Burns is described as a well-off doctor who had attended medical school but had had no true formal training as a surgeon other than a long apprenticeship with his father in Indiana. He maintains a dismissive attitude toward those colleagues (such as the Swampmen) who went through the rigors and demands of a residency for their training. However, his belief in his own superiority masks serious shortcomings in his surgical abilities, which he invariably dismisses as the failures of others involved in the patients' care. When one of Burns' patients dies, "it's either God's will or somebody else's fault" (Hooker, p. 43). This practice comes to a head when he unjustly accuses rookie orderly Private Boone of killing one of his patients. Boone is emotionally crushed and an infuriated Duke, who witnesses the scene, walks with Frank to the privacy of the sluice where he delivers a nose-breaking punch and knee to the stomach. A short time later, Trapper assaults Frank after Frank's arrogance and incompetence almost costs another soldier his life. The concern of the surgeons on Frank's team regarding Frank's incompetence causes Blake to nominate Trapper as Chief Surgeon in the novel and movie and Hawkeye in the TV series.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

106. If it's been so thoroughly rebutted (over and over and over...) then just post the common rebuttal.

It must be easy to find and a little copy+paste should give you an irrefutable response. Or you can just continue to call anything that doesn't fit into your personal worldview "talking points".

The guy across the street from me works for Wackenhut. God only knows what kinds of weapons he owns. I only ever see him with a BB gun with which he shoots at the squirrels, futilely, I may add. And, it my actually be an air rifle, rather than a BB gun. He's a nice enough guy. I don't worry about it.

54. There are going to be irresponsible neighbors that have guns

The neighbor behind me fired his gun into the air because the other neighbor's dogs were barking too loud.

I found out my other neighbor had a gun when he stormed out of his house yelling at the kid across the street for driving too fast. He threatened to shoot him if his kids were ran over. That threat got a visit from the police.

I did a survey and it seems most of the uptight white guys on my street have guns and a temper. Ironically, most of them also have fences around their yards.

I won't move because of them and I'm not afraid of their guns. They are the ones living in fear not me.

But I will put my foot down if they fire their guns into the air again. I don't want their bullets coming down and destroying my solar panels.

80. Only if after the apocalypse they use their guns to take my farm or stuff

I live in the rural South. It's a given that most if not all my neighbors have guns. Heck, one has a private gun range and spends many weekend afternoons practicing shooting.

Some of my neighbors are irresponsible enough that I've chased them off my property when I caught them poaching - AFTER I refused to give them permission to hunt my property. The one with the practice range, I don't worry about. He does not hunt on his property because he considers his 50 acres too small to be a safe hunting spot since it is surrounded by development, even though it backs up to my 60 acres, mostly undeveloped. By being there, he keeps down the number of poachers that might come onto my farm.

I'm not going to be paranoid about my neighbors. If they commit a crime on my property, I know where to find them.

82. LOL - I am pretty sure he has both.

Given the way the regular weekend shoots sound over there.

I am pretty sure the neighbor across the way has some. Now his widow. I know the next guy down the road has some.

If I thought any of these people were unstable, it would worry me if they had a pistol. As long as I know they're normal, I wouldn't care if they had a machine gun.

I realize that this isn't "normal" in the 'burbs or the cities, but around here, people use these guns for a bunch of stuff, including target shooting and hunting. It is normal around here.

Around here, if you don't have guns people assume you are a felon. It doesn't do a whole lot for your reputation. I don't hunt, I do fish, and I don't like guns, although I do know how to shoot. But scared of them? No. Scared of people who have them? No - I'd be terrified of all my neighbors. It would be like being scared of black people or southerners or white people or rain.

If you were to judge by the responses in most gun threads, you'd think most people here are anti-gun. It seems that the anti's are just way more vocal. Most people either don't care about what guns you own or own guns themselves. This is as it should be. I don't butt into other people's life choices and expect the same in return. 232. it's not a hunting rifle

And in a city like where I live something like that only brings trouble. It's a murder machine. No sane person wants anything like that. Yes, I'm making assumptions if someone spends his days practicing how to kill large numbers of people he isn't aren't psychologically sound. Would you choose to live next to a meth lab? I see this as comparable.

It is not a machine gun or anything else. It is a "regular" rifle, it's just made to look "cool."

A meth labber and a law-abiding gun owner are not comparable. My God.

278. how do I know the person is law abiding?

You certainly don't. He's got the capacity to slaughter dozens of people. That's what I care about. There is nothing cool about machines designed to murder. The concept is perverse. Both the gun and the meth lab are dangerous. That one is legal and the other isn't speaks to the idiosyncrasies of the law.

So you all have the right to stockpile WMD but I don't have the right to live where I want? Is that what you're saying now?

317. I still see a rifle. It's unfortunate that you presume to know the mindset of every person...

...who owns a similar rifle.

I own one, and murdering anyone is the last thing I would ever want to do.

If I really wanted to murder someone I had a perfect storm of an opportunity Monday night. I driving to a restaurant after dark, and a person who fit two of my biggest road pet peeves - Idiot bicyclists who don't obey traffic laws, and people who talk on cell phones while driving - went through a red light, violating my right-of-way at an intersection. He had no lights on, and no helmet or any other protective gear.

Without any conscious thought I hit the brakes, hard. My SUV stopped about six feet short of the path of the cyclist, who continued on at a good clip without even looking in my direction.

If I had maintained course and speed there probably would have been a collision, and I would have "won." But I value life over all other things. Even the life of a low-life nitwit who doesn't value his own life.

If I was prone to worrying about strange things that strangers post on the Internet, I might take offense at your attitude. But I really don't care what you think. I'll keep my rifle and continue to keep it locked up when I'm not out using it responsibly.

"Assault weapons" is a vague catch-all term. "Assault rifles" are military grade and fully automatic, which civilian versions are not.

And in this county, I would be surprised if my neighbors did not have them.

Almost none of the people who own military pattern weapons will ever "snap" (whatever that means).

283. Okay, so Indulge Me If You Would

You said an "assault clip" is a "device to feed more bullets to the chamber than any moral person will need..."

Can you give me an actual definition of those two words?

Do you not see this is an undefined idea/thing as there is no arbiter of morality? I'm really trying to tap dance for you here because at any moment any one of dozens of potential people is going to pop up, call me a Precious Flower or Gun Nut (despite the fact that I don't own any guns) accuse me of NRA talking points and were back at step 1.

An "assault clip" isn't, by definition a thing. I can't point at my Jeep Wrangler and say "Yeah, that's my ArfGarble" and expect people to know what I'm talking about. If you ask random people on the street what an "assault clip" is, you probably wouldn't get the same answer twice and probably would instead get a funny look because most people wouldn't understand what you're talking about.

To me, this thread (and the hundreds that came before it) are a beautiful, exquisite example of why the country makes no progress on this issue.

266. You certainly attracted a

swarm of newbie Gungeon recruits (read trolls) with this poll. It's comical to see them rushing to defend a mythical neighbor with a gun. Almost as funny as watching them run around in circles with their hair on fire and screaming "my 2nd Amendment rights!"

276. No less that it has attracted a swarm

of gun grabbers.

And then everyone class each other names, no meaningful dialogue takes place.

Return to step 1.

323. You would let the authorities know he has something legal?

*shrug*

I love bringing pie to neighbors. Also samosas, now that my wife divulged her "ancient Bengali secret" (*cough* planko *cough*) for cooking them.

289. Why?

I might move if they were cooking meth or if it was a flop house for meth heads.

I also might move if they had NY Jets bumper stickers on their cars.

315. Interesting poll results

I went back today and looked at the OP's poll results. 71% of DUers have no problem with their neighbor owning assault weapons. Only a minority of 29% would object. I wonder how this DU poll would compare with a similar nationwide poll?

326. Wrong.

The question posed was would you move if you knew your neighbor owned assault rifles. I voted no to that question; not that I had no problem with people owning them. I'd rather prefer that no one owned assault rifles, or any type of weapons in general, but the fact remains that they're currently legal and my neighbor has the right to own them. Assuming I knew and trusted my neighbor, I wouldn't move over them owning an assault weapon. Now, if I thought my neighbor was a danger to me or family based on their demonstrated behavior and I knew they owned assault weapons, then I'd probably be looking to get the hell out of Dodge.

344. Oh, no worries

We are fast becoming (or trying to become) an Escape From New York society. Soon the criminals and NRA gang will be the only ones who will want to live here. Perhaps a few decades after they destroy each other in their wars, normal peaceful people will return. But the clean up will be a bitch.
