Alex Jones: huckster or mental illness?

The act of a snake oil salesman or does he suffer from some sort of mental illness like delusions of grandeur, paranoia, persecution complex. One might also ask that if a person is willing to go on national TV for big bucks looking like an unhinged person, if that is also a sign that he's had some sort of break down.

What is frightening is that he seemingly has a lot of far left wing followers. Jones himself has tried to claim the 'Occupy' mantle by trying to tie some of his New World Order protests as Occupy protests. He's trying to cast a wider net to sell his DVDs, he's got a lot of DVDs. Jones is an old style John Birch Society freeper type. He rants and raves about flouride, Jones could be seen as Slim Pickens and Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper from Dr. Strangelove all rolled up into one. He rants about the end of the world, he'll sell you freeze dried food and gold. He rants about flouride, yup water filters sold right there on his website. He tries to steal air time by getting "arrested" at certain protests, 9/11 truther protests in NY, Bilderberg, etc.

The guy has a small media empire. Who ever compared him to Glenn Beck is right on the money. Except, Jones is more dangerous in the Andrew Breitbart vein. His dog whistles could lead to somebody really losing it and unloading an assault rifle into a Federal building.

Does Jones believe what he is saying or is it just an act?

7. I am not a professional in mental health but he does not seem to have control of himself.

He appears to be unreasonable and is in constant rant and rage and perhaps he should seek some help to be able to control his vital signs. If this man has a CCW it needs to be revoked and any further attempts to purchase firearms should be prevented. Perhaps his A type behavior is not good for his health. The State of Texas should look into his ownership of weapons and immediately revoke his CCW.

I've mentioned before, but my poor dear brother has turned full-on whacko since he fell under the spell of info wars. He may have been slightly bonkers before; he's had anger issues since he was a kid and was in the military, both army and marine corps, then went on to be a cop. Every nutty theory that spills out of his mouth comes from the brain of Alex Jones and he seems to have lost the ability to think rationally. He gets really angry when I say "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" and seems to pride himself in his new-found ability to see nefarious intentions/origins in everything, but especially where it concerns the government. In fact, I just hung up the phone with him and through the course of conversation discovered, to my horror, that his new topic du jour is..."Ancient Aliens", talking about how some "biologist" made some "really valid points" when making some absolutely ridiculous claims about how certain animals species have most certainly have been cloned by "others".

22. "He rants and raves about flouride" --Quick Tell Harvard

http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/features/features/fluoride-childrens-health-grandjean-choi.html

In a meta-analysis, researchers from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and China Medical University in Shenyang for the first time combined 27 studies and found strong indications that fluoride may adversely affect cognitive development in children. Based on the findings, the authors say that this risk should not be ignored, and that more research on fluoride’s impact on the developing brain is warranted.

The study was published online in Environmental Health Perspectives on July 20, 2012.

*********

Just because someone appears a little nutty doesn't mean everything they say is bullshit.

WTF with putting fluoride in water for kids teeth anyway? How much of the fluoride actually makes it into the childrens mouth? My family won't be drinking fluoridated water no matter who points out the dangers.

Fluoride in the water-what a scam

The goal of this sort of name calling is to say Me and my group is better that you and your group.

I appreciate the theoretical underpinnings of the term ableism, but it is way too sophisticated to be understood by those who really need to grasp it's meaning.

35. Does anyone understand that the media may use cherry-picked persons to demonize topics

they wish destroyed? If someone unstable tells the truth where it has been purposely silenced so that no one knows about it, the unstable person becomes a tool of association against the truths those in power wish further demonized/marginalized.

Consider how visibly republicans are attempting to utterly demonize words such as "socialism" and "liberal", so that no one would ever wish to be even considered vaguely associated with them. They've been highly effective as most people consume soundbites and do no further research.

It is merely continuing a trend.

I really don't know who this person is, but there are genuine problems in this country some wish not even be discussed. This week has seen extensions upon both the warrantless wiretapping FISA bill and the indefinite detention without trial or representation bill the NDAA. Get a "nut" to discuss them when no mainstream news agency has even begun to mention them, and they'll appear completely out of context to those who will not then search the internet for "NDAA section 1021", as everyone should. I can't speak for anything else he may have said; didn't see the show.

If Piers Morgan is attempting to conflate "mental illness" with talk of the NDAA, FISA, FBI monitoring of Occupy, DHS involvement in police departments, sales of drones to law enforcement, DHS purchasing millions of rounds of hollow-point munitions, etc., then we MUST discuss these topics until everyone knows them by heart and rejects them utterly.

46. Jones' biggest fault is that he doesn't distinguish sourced "facts" from speculation,

diluting the potential power of the facts and reasonable conclusions that differ from official narratives. I effect, he's acting as a disinformation guy poisoning the well for reality-based skeptics of government and corporate cover stories.

I've noted on many occasions that Jones talks about subjects I have studied that he starts off in the realm of reality, as I understand it from seeing the same information from credible sources, but then starts mixing in unverifiable speculation and unnamed sourcing, claiming he somehow has access to super-secret classified information.

That dilutes the impact of the facts, which if they were allowed to stand on their own might support some of the same conclusions that he attributes as facts based in unverifiable sources. Because he is not careful in citing sources, and does not clearly distinguish fact from sometimes outlandish theory, he does harm to the truth, creates suspicions about reality-based skeptics, and helps to cover up and obscure some very real scandals.

41. IMO, he's just an opportunist...

I don't totally ignore watching anything internet based with his"Prison Planet" stuff, as some of the World Banking schemes are based in truth. The problem with enterprises like Jones' show, is that his own business plan is dependent on selling some of these DVDs on "what happened with the WTC" without truly weighing in on what happened. IOW, you really get a lot of MIHOP when some are trying to decide LIHOP. To truly ask that question, one would have to read things called BOOKS.

The LIHOP questioners can be led to some of Jones' stuff regarding 9/11. Nothing wrong with that, as when you read many opinions on the internet, it's nothing but free information. From that standpoint, we're supposed to be able to decide if world governments lie to their citizens. Wow... what a concept! This startling recognition has been historically challenged throughout the history of war across the planet. People are lied to all the time. Therefore, you get people like Alex Jones, or long ago, Chuck Harder, or Truth TV, or Engineers and Architects on 9/11. Messengers who question shadow governments or cabals who enable world wars, or military industrial complexes are not seeking anything more than all those persons who enjoy the History Channel when it includes these programs. In the mix of information referenced on other information, some logically see some truth to what Jones presents. But in the final analysis, the question we should ask is, "Is it bullshit, or just fringe?" NOT... "Is this mental illness?" That's a leading assumption in anyone who is open to reading anything. You are casting doubt on the mental capacity to QUESTION!

So, respectfully, I think the OP is focused on the wrong question.

Do any of you realize or even care how hurtful this yype of armchair psychiatry is to people such as myself who have an actual mental health issue?

Frankly, I'm on my third psychiatrist in about five months, the first two couldn't even DX me properly at all. Right now, my psychologist says PTSD, not bipolar II, my psychiatrist said well, I think you have both, but no real way to know for sure.

If THEY have trouble diagnosing, how can the layman do it?

58. He's in it for the money and the attention.

I just said on another thread, Jones doesn't even buy most of the crap he's selling. It's 90% shtick mixed in with 10% possibility equals 100% profit off the gullible. He makes a very good living taking money from the conspiracy whack-a-doodles in the world. But then you know what they say about a fool and their money.

59. Jones never met a conspiracy theory he didn't embrace.

He hates everyone in government and everything government does. Except for Ron Paul and his spawn.

He's flamboyant and just as charismatic as David Koresh. His followers have a cult-like devotion to him.

He makes his money by constantly ringing the bell of doom and gloom and that The Government is about to turn into the Big Brother of 1984, if it hasn't already. He plays on the gut fear people have that they may lose everything and the anger some have that they're being screwed by The Man. He gives these people a tangible boogy man to vent their fear and anger on.

He rants like the most fervent evangelical preacher. Does he believe his own schtick? Probably. Like Beck or the Fat Boy, nobody can know for sure because none of them are going to admit otherwise while the gravy train is still chugging down the track.

60. His breakout conspiracy was Waco

That's when Jones started down this path, I think he ran for some office as well, on the state level or councilman.

70. Fucking talented huckster.

Think about it - uneducated, clueless, bigoted - and yet he got rich selling "info". I think selling bullshit is somehow eerily all-american and while I despise his message, I can't help but respect that the he got rich without really doing anything. The ultimate corruption of the American dream but very seductive.

Also, he has talent in that he can hold a 3 hour broadcast in which he constantly alludes to upcoming "important info" without ever actualy bringing it up . Talking for hours without saying anything is more challenging than it might seem on the face of it. He certainly mastered that discipline.
