What I learned after a long weekend watching JFK assasination videos

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by REP (a host of the General Discussion forum).

The President is not in charge.

The National Security Establishment is in charge.

If as president you decide to go against them and shut down the war machine, they will kill you. They will kill your family. They will kill anyone who might by their leadership help you.

And they will get away with it.

And if others point out this obvious fact, they will be hounded, discrediited and possibly killed also.

Obama is only doing the tiny things he can get away with without getting himself killed by his own national security team.

So far.

Now the national security types pretty much rule Congress and ignore the will of the citizens. No help there.

What do you think you could accomplish in the face of that?

(Now awaiting my requisite ridicule and character assassination. )

1. the question then is this:

Why would anyone want to be president?

Surely no candidate ever gets on a ticket without knowing full well the forces that will control him.

5. re Obama there are 2 obvious answers

1) he is honestly devoted to love of country and public service, and believed he could make real change

2) he's one of "them"

and possibly 3) he believed 1, but very quickly discovered how helpless he is in reality, and dove for cover.

I'm leaning to 3, but I'm just a cockeyed optimist.

3. I'm learning much the same thing and much more while watching...

Oliver Stone's History of the United States on Showtime. It's a great series!

9. Yes, it is.

I loved the way he eviscerated the St. Ronnie myth.

4. Obama could expose them in his last days in office

Take a 2 hour slot on TV and explain it. To me, the fact that JFK didn't have ANY Secret Service agents on his car speaks volumes, but that's me. I also feel 9/11 was a power grab for the Repukes and PNAC. I don't care what anybody thinks of how I feel about 9/11. I know what I know, and there is no going back. The same with RFK too. He was shot at close range, and they never tested the security guards guns to see if they were fired. And a security guard was right behind RFK.

8. +1

9/11 and JFK are really the same issue and (sometimes literally) the same actors.

6. How does he know when he's pressing the limit?

How does he judge the "tiny things he can get away with without getting himself killed by his own national security team?"

Sounds like a dangerous job.

12. he's a smart guy

and limited at every step by the same national security repubs protecting the Pentagon and the war machine--except now they have more power than in 1963.
