CURL: Obama supporters shocked, angry at new tax increases

Sometimes, watching a Democrat learn something is wonderful, like seeing the family dog finally sit and stay at your command.

With President Obama back in office and his life-saving “fiscal cliff” bill jammed through Congress, the new year has brought a surprising turn of events for his sycophantic supporters.

“What happened that my Social Security withholding’s in my paycheck just went up?” a poster wrote on the liberal site DemocraticUnderground.com. “My paycheck just went down by an amount that I don’t feel comfortable with. I guarantee this decrease is gonna’ hurt me more than the increase in income taxes will hurt those making over 400 grand. What happened?”

Shocker. Democrats who supported the president’s re-election just had NO idea that his steadfast pledge to raise taxes meant that he was really going to raise taxes. They thought he planned to just hit those filthy “1 percenters,” you know, the ones who earned fortunes through their inventiveness and hard work. They thought the free ride would continue forever.

And not one word is said about how the RWNJs who started those threads were taken to the woodshed about their ignorance and idiocy.

and then again on the 31st.

That'll be just for the FICA change.

The insurance change will be worse, but that's the fucked up management in my company fucking all of us over.

The FICA change I'll be proud to pay. The insurance change I have no choice but to pay.

12. There's a thread on page one which attributes a quote to Bernie Sanders

which is incorrect; and picked up as truth by a few dozen individuals.

I won't link to the thread for the reason of not giving it more attention than it needs.

However, these types of threads and comments are examples of how one must be prudent in what they post as factual; as the 'journalists' these days are picking up on anything and presenting it as fact; regardless of it's citations or turth.

15. Even the Washington Times fingered Bake as a troll....funny.

“Bake,” who may have been trolling the site, jumped into the thread posted Friday. “My paycheck just went down. So did my wife’s. This hurts us. But everybody says it’s a good thing, so I guess we just suck it up and get used to it. I call it a tax increase on the middle class. I wonder what they call it. Somebody on this thread called it a ‘premium.’ Nope. It’s a tax, and it just went up.”

I was surprised that so many DUers took the post at face value. It just seemed "off" to me straightaway.

So I searched on the username and "fiscal cliff" and found an OP by the same poster which showed that they knew *exactly* what had happened (in fact I don't believe the poster even received their paycheck on that date, it was just a useful frame for a fake anecdote IMO).

Based on the simple fact that there is no way the payroll dept could've processed the change that quickly. Nobody knew that the tax holiday would not be extended until 1/1/2013. This fool made a post on the 3rd I believe and claimed to have seen a significant reduction in his check (he must make a lot for 2% of 2 days with of pay to be significant). Most people won't see the changes until the second check of the month (some will see it in the first check depending on when in January they get paid).

looking at the number of views, tweets, and likes, it was clear that it was being used for reasons other than what was intended. In that thread and others I have yet to back down from my anger against a regressive tax system and will continue to do so. A majority of the Bush tax cuts were extended, but the holiday was not. At the same time I don't remember raising the cap to be a part of the negotiations. Regressive bullshit. How was letting the Bush tax cuts expire for those over $400,00 considered to be a tax increase on the wealthy, while letting the payroll tax holiday expire is considered to be going back to the way it was and not a tax increase.

Thanks for your reply.

My reaction when reading the post was how fucking clueless and selfish could a person be. My take from the payroll tax holiday expiration is that the President fought to keep it, but had to negotiate with republicans that wanted to eliminate the payroll tax holiday and more funding for critical social programs. The OP of the tread that the right-wing is quoting is an example of DU members that have their heads shoved up their asses.

56. It wouldn't have been effective if it wasn't something that was commonly happening

I certainly knew that the withholding was going *back* up but I was just about alone in real life.

Our media couldn't do much worse explaining policy and how it effects the individual, when they talk about politics it's always in the horse race framing mode.

That people would look at smaller paychecks and think their taxes have gone up was inevitable, half the people won't see a gorilla walk through a video set if they're not primed to look for it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inattentional_blindness

In different versions of the video a woman walks through the scene carrying an umbrella, or wearing a full gorilla suit. After watching the video the subjects are asked if they saw anything out of the ordinary take place. In most groups, 50% of the subjects did not report seeing the gorilla. The failure to perceive the gorilla or the woman carrying an umbrella is attributed to the failure to attend to it while engaged in the difficult task of counting the number of passes of the ball. These results indicate that the relationship between what is in one's visual field and perception is based much more on attention than was previously thought.

Life is a difficult task for most people, they're busy attending to it and don't have their attention focused on abstract stuff like politics, add that with the miserable and often outright dishonest job our media does in informing of things and it's a recipe for profound ignorance.

Additionally, I suppose nobody should be too surprised since Limbaugh and Drudge both have presences on the internet. As one of the bigger liberal boards, of course they know of DU.

Anyway, I pay attention to neither one; they have nothing to say of any interest to me, but I wasn't criticizing you for starting the thread.
