Anyone else skipping the SOTU speech?
Everyone knows Barack is great at speaking, so I will wait until the transcript is released to read what he said, or at least the highlights. I'm not a fan of all the pageantry and ritual surrounding the state of the union speech by presidents either.

27. Oh just simple things, like when the SC ass hat yelled:
|
"You lie" - I would not want to read about that, I want to be there for it.
Or when the Supremes last year acted disrespectfully, one never knows just what could happen, we're dealing with people, after all. Or, if Chris Christie secretly eats a whole grilled chicken during the speech... I would want to see the grease stains spread. On the good side, I'd like to be there when our President does himself proud in the middle of so many who hate him and aren't fit to shine his shoes. |

I actually love to watch the President come into the chamber and then give a speech. It might not be a big deal to some but to me a SOTU is part of history, good or bad. I like the ritual and inane tidbits of history like:
Calvin Coolidge's 1923 speech was the first to be broadcast on radio. Harry S. Truman's 1947 address was the first to be broadcast on television. Lyndon B. Johnson's address in 1965 was the first delivered in the evening. Three years later, in 1968, television networks in the United States, for the first time, imposed no time limit for their coverage of a State of the Union address. Delivered by Lyndon B. Johnson, this address was followed by extensive televised commentary by, among others, Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Milton Friedman. Ronald Reagan was the only president to have postponed his State of the Union Address. On January 28, 1986, he planned to give his address, but after learning of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, he postponed it for a week and addressed the nation on the day's events. This was the only time that the State of the Union address had to be postponed. Bill Clinton's 1997 address was the first broadcast available live on the World Wide Web.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_the_Union_address I think it is because history was always my favorite subject in school. |
