If it doesn't work out with Hagel...can Obama nominate Max Cleland instead?

He could clearly take the fight to the 'pugs in a confirmation battle.

3. I have no idea. But then, Obama wants the guy he knows and works with.

I think Cleland was out of the Senate by the time Obama elected for Illinois--I am not sure they even know each other. I have no idea what Max brings to the table. But, I admire him.

4. he won`t back down on hagel because...

he does`t have to. if they do`t vote for hagel the republicans can kiss the next election good bye. there won`t be a moderate republican left in the republican party. try willing an election with out the center of the republican party..there is not enough teaparty zealots to elect a majority both the house and senate.

5. Obama should nominate Michele Flournoy.

She formerly worked in the Pentagon as Deputy Secretary of Defense. She would not only be a natural choice based upon knowledge of the department and competence, but her nomination and certain approval by the Senate would be a major statement to the world.
