Don't EVER Listen to Matt Taibbi. Not Ever.

Some people seem to think that because Taibbi exposes bad things that powerful people do to you little people, that he's some sort of hero.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

As has been pointed out in other DU posts today, Taibbi sometimes says that both congressional Democrats and Republicans have been against things that are being done to us by the Executive branch.

Asshole!

It is unacceptable for you little people to say that Republicans ever have the same opinion as Democrats, people like Taibbi should know better.

The privilege of saying that Republicans agree with Democrats is reserved solely for important and serious people who need to say the word "bipartisan" a lot to sound like we're sensible.

So get with the program: Taibbi is a scoundrel. Don't read what he has to say. Please. Just don't read it. Nothing to see there. Keep moving. Maybe there's something good on YouTube: hey, have you seen that Gangnam Style video yet? Maybe now's the time to finally watch it. Or there's probably good stuff with kittens. Or go outside, it's a nice day. Reading is so last-century.

Regards,

Third-Way Manny

Not only because you told me not to, 3rd way (and btw thank you for pointing the correct third way direction on this) but because I started reading his article shortly after eating a lovely lunch of freshly made black forest mushroom soup and nearly lost the whole thing. I had to go take a nap and dream happy daydreams to keep my lunch.

and then I did some chores and fed the critters. And I was just feeding myself my lowly comfort food dinner of potatoes w/burger, cheese and spaghetti sauce, when I found myself reading excerpts from his article in a post bashing him. And there went my dinner.

Never, ever again. I can't afford to lose my meals...

12. My new favorite

Republicans: Grassley, Issa, Vitter, Inhofe, Bunning, Sessions, DeMint, Brasso, Enzi and Brownback.

Thanks Matt!

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022141335

The fact is Taibbi is trying to portray Republican Senators as objecting to TARP and trying to rein it in is equivalent to "truth"? On what planet?

Congress was furious. "We've been lied to," fumed Rep. David Scott, a Democrat from Georgia. Rep. Elijah Cummings, a Democrat from Maryland, raged at transparently douchey TARP administrator (and Goldman banker) Neel Kashkari, calling him a "chump" for the banks. And the anger was bipartisan: Republican senators David Vitter of Louisiana and James Inhofe of Oklahoma were so mad about the unilateral changes and lack of oversight that they sponsored a bill in January 2009 to cancel the remaining $350 billion of TARP.

So what did bailout officials do? They put together a proposal full of even bigger deceptions to get it past Congress a second time. That process began almost exactly four years ago – on January 12th and 15th, 2009 – when Larry Summers, the senior economic adviser to President-elect Barack Obama, sent a pair of letters to Congress. The pudgy, stubbyfingered former World Bank economist, who had been forced out as Harvard president for suggesting that women lack a natural aptitude for math and science, begged legislators to reject Vitter's bill and leave TARP alone.

Vitter as the hero is bizarre bullshit.

Taibbi is actually trying to make the case that prior to Obama's swearing in, Vitter and other Republicans were credibly and legitimately going after TARP.

None of these Republicans voted for Wall Street Reform and they are not in a fight against Wall Street.

An original bill to promote the financial stability of the United States by improving accountability and transparency in the financial system, to end "too big to fail", to protect the American taxpayer by ending bailouts, to protect consumers from abusive financial services practices, and for other purposes.

In fact, the turned their venom on the one person who provided oversight of the program, Elizabeth Warren:

On November 14, 2008, Warren was appointed by United States Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to chair the five-member Congressional Oversight Panel created to oversee the implementation of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act. The Panel released monthly oversight reports that evaluated the government bailout and related programs. During Warren's tenure, these reports covered foreclosure mitigation, consumer and small business lending, commercial real estate, AIG, bank stress tests, the impact of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) on the financial markets, government guarantees, the automotive industry, and other topics.(a)

47. Hear! Hear! Hear! Hear! Hear! Hear! Hear!

+10000 to the nth degree!

You live up to your name, ProSense. Anybody, I say anybody who thinks we got into this grand financial mess without right wing Democrats needs to back up and read some congressional history. Go back around 40 years and come forward. That may be a wee bit far, but lets say no later than 30 years ago. Start at Jimmy Carter or Ronald Reagan. Heck, when you think about, if you just go back to Clinton and come forward, it's as blatant as the nose on one's face!

All I can say is these "third-wayers" must either be very young, or very rich with the support of the DLC, or both. We as Democrats must hold ourselves partially responsible for what has happened and get right with our platform and principles once again. Taibbi speaks the TRUTH. Truth is a bitter pill, but we must take our medicine or we will never get well. This struggle with the DLC mentality is tearing the Democratic Party apart. And it must be stopped, no matter how long it takes. If we start now, maybe in 20 years we can be back to a REAL Democratic Party. Why 20 years? Because that's the number of years since Clinton was elected and came into office.0

128. IF you have correctly identified the Blue Dogs, the DLC and the "New Democrats" as the problem,

then you should also know about this:

"The Arkansas primary fight illuminates some unpleasant though vital truths about the Democratic establishment "
"So what did the Democratic Party establishment do when a Senator who allegedly impedes their agenda faced a primary challenger who would be more supportive of that agenda? They engaged in full-scale efforts to support Blanche Lincoln. Bill Clinton traveled to Arkansas to urge loyal Democrats to vote for her, bashing liberal groups for good measure. Obama recorded an ad for Lincoln which, among other things, were used to tell African-American primary voters that they should vote for her because she works for their interests. The entire Party infrastructure lent its support and resources to Lincoln — a Senator who supposedly prevents Democrats from doing all sorts of Wonderful, Progressive Things which they so wish they could do but just don’t have the votes for.

<snip>

What happened in this race also gives the lie to the insufferable excuse we’ve been hearing for the last 18 months from countless Obama defenders: namely, if the Senate doesn’t have 60 votes to pass good legislation, it’s not Obama’s fault because he has no leverage over these conservative Senators. It was always obvious what an absurd joke that claim was; the very idea of The Impotent, Helpless President, presiding over a vast government and party apparatus, was laughable. But now, in light of Arkansas, nobody should ever be willing to utter that again with a straight face. Back when Lincoln was threatening to filibuster health care if it included a public option, the White House could obviously have said to her: if you don’t support a public option, not only will we not support your re-election bid, but we’ll support a primary challenger against you. Obama’s support for Lincoln did not merely help; it was arguably decisive, as The Washington Post documented today:"

Are we all Republicans now? Like that song that Garrison Keillor sang on PHC when GWB wound up with a second term? Or maybe it was in 2000?

I don't like this one party business at all. We are supposed to have two parties and I wish to God we'd get back to it! I love Obama and the Big Dawg, and I love Hillary, but this is downright scandalous. Democrats do not have to be Republicans to win an effing election!

Well, I'm an effing Democrat till I die. Call me DEMOCRAT, PROGRESSIVEand even the big bad bookey word a LIBERAL!

135. That argument did NOT apply in Arkansas.

The FDR Left, the Grass Roots, the Pro-Health Care supporters,
the UNIONS, Environmental Groups, Progressive activists, Obama supporters, all came together and did everything right.
We had national funding from the Unions and other sources.
We chose a very popular Democrat
who was polling better than Lincoln against the Republicans,
who already had a political machine,
who had a record of winning elections,
Democratic Governor Bill Halter.

Lincoln has ZERO chance against the Republican in the General election.

We did everything exactly right to "give Obama more progressives in Congress ",
....and our BIGGEST enemy turned out to be the Obama White House.

What happened in the Arkansas Primary forever puts to rest the myth of an excuse you posted above.
The next time a "centrist" trots THAT one out, you can laugh at them.
"Ordinarily, when Party leaders support horrible incumbents in primaries, they use the “electability” excuse: this is a conservative state, the incumbent has the best chance to win, and the progressive challenger is out-of-step with voters. That excuse is clearly unavailable here. As Public Policy Polling explained yesterday, Lincoln has virtually no chance of winning in November against GOP challenger John Boozman.

And while it would have also been difficult for Halter to beat Boozman, polls consistently showed that he had a better chance than Lincoln did. That’s unsurprising, given how much better non-Washington candidates are doing in this incumbent-hating climate than long-term Washington insiders. And it’s rather difficult to claim that Halter is out-of-step with Arkansas given that they elected him their Lt. Governor. Whatever the reasons Washington Democrats had for supporting the deeply unpopular Lincoln, it had nothing whatsoever to do with electability."

http://www.salon.com/2010/06/10/lincoln_6/

IF Arkansas 2010 was an anomaly, I might be willing to overlook the White House's active support for the conservative as just a major fuck up,
but Arkansas was not an anomaly.
The pattern was repeated in Colorado and Pennsylvania where the White House threw their full support behind a REPUBLICAN who recently changed the letter behind his name, but nothing else.

When the White House was asked to explain their active support, including an Oval Office endorsement and funds from the DSCC for Lincoln,
the only response was from a "White House Spokesman" who taunted and ridiculed our efforts stating that "the Unions just wasted $10MIllion Dollars."

It will be a LONG time before those of us in the trenches in Arkansas forget what the Obama White House did here in 2010.

138. Absolutely. That was one of the incidents that taught me

what the Obamites, and High Priest Rahm, were/are all about.

It's not different now.

The last 4 years were a window of opportunity for great changes and a restoration of America as a nation dedicated to the welfare of its people. 2010 happened as it did because the Dems were doing nothing to deliver on that potential. No, they didn't have a super-majority in the Senate. But by their actions and inactions, they made damn sure it stayed that way.

...used to make Democrats run away crying with their tails tucked between their legs. Yeah, we hated the names. They'd call us the evil word "Libruls'", and we'd go hide. We hunched over in shame so many times when they called us names, that our backbones became deformed. But modern medicine, like this bankrupt economy and hurting Americans from shore to shore, has come to the rescue. One by one, our spines are straightening back up. Playground foolishness is recognized and the names and insults bounce off of us and ricochet back to them. Faux ratings are going down, down, down.

The Third Way has infected OUR Party and we will be working hard getting them out of this party over the next four years and sending them back to where they belong.

You should engage more in political discussion on DU. Anyone who has been here for time at all and doesn't know what the Third Way is and how it has destroyed the Dem Party must be doing something other than discussing politics here.

Can't imagine any Democrat confusing the Third Way with a Third Party.

Didn't do Labour a whole lot of good IMO - it worked OK when the Conservatives were in disarray but after Blair left... whoops.

What's worse than Third Way? Third Way in a Third Party. It's the perfect way to alienate your "base". Look at the Liberal Democrats in the UK - a Third Party that is going about things Third Way. Latest opinion polls have them in fourth place!

But in retrospect he never was the 'liberal' he pretended to be and I keep hoping that Britain will find the courage to prosecute their war criminals one day. It's doubt ful though. The Third Way aka Wall Street has been allowed to gather too much power.

observing something that does happen around here:

1. When it's my own particular brand of "third" whatever, as in Taibbi's use of that Republican roll call on that vote, it's okay;
2. When it's someone else's brand of "third" whatever, as in PO's recent use of Reagan & deficit cap effects upon bonds recently, that's NOT okay.

I would like to observe that without 1. AND 2. above, there couldn't be any "third" anything.

50. Taibbi (name sounds foreign to me) throws around too much information

All this information is simply misdirection to distract us from the greater truth. He might point out, for example, that Democrats and Republicans both supported and voted for a particular bill, as if this fact alone means something. In his shoddily researched articles does he ever go the extra mile and explain the critical differences between these seemingly identical (to the political neophite) "yes" votes?

In his blizzard of facts and information, has he even tried to explain that a democratic yes on a bill often means that they are vehemently opposed to that bill's passage, while the identical yes vote from a Republican indicates enthusiastic support? Has he ever, even once, devoted even a single article to the Democratic Congressman's nobility and love of country, and contrasted these ever-present virtues with the Republican's loathing of all things American?

I think not. And lacking that framework it is impossible to understand the critical differences between seemingly identical votes.

"Democratic Congressman's nobility and love of country, and contrasted these ever-present virtues with the Republican's loathing of all things American?"

Snarkiness aside, last time I checked, that statement is actually true.

When we have our enemy on the ropes, I'm not sure why guys Taibbi are picking on Democrats. The day we have progressive super majorities in both houses of congress, a progressive majority in the Supreme Court, AND a progressive president, I'll worry about internal house cleaning. Until then, we need to stand unified until the Rethugs are locked out of ALL decision making and their racist teabagger constituents have no more say in how the rest of America is run.

I saw the humble start of her career, when she and her brethren kicked down a protest shanty town in the Arts Quad.

In fact, I think my fraternity brother... ah, never mind.

After all, Obama is an anti-American Muslim Socialist, right?

108. In 2004, Matt Taibi repeatedly attacked presidential candidate John Kerry

for being boring and stodgy. Are those qualities a disqualifier for the job of president?

Did you enjoy the 2nd Bush term? Good thing we didn't have that blue-blood John Kerry as our president!

Point: Matt Taibi is kind of an @sshole.

129. Disqualifiers for the job of President?...No, but

....as history has painfully shown us, over and over,
those ARE qualities that WILL disqualify one from winning a national election in the USA.
QED: 2004

Of course, that Painful Reality says much more about the USA than it does about John Kerry.

It is hard for me to believe that you would chose this failure as an example,
because it supports Taibbi's grasp of reality, and NOT yours.

You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their rhetoric, promises, or excuses.

137. Pardon me, but Taibbi wasn't attacking Kerry the primary candidate,

but Kerry as the only person standing between Dumbya and a 2nd four-year term in office. Taibbi spit in the face of the Democratic party, over shallow garbage on the same level as "which candidate would you rather have a beer with?"

So your post misses the mark by a mile. Don't try to blame Taibbi's betrayal on voters being shallow.

If people only want to vote for candidates you like, then good luck to them. But here in the real world, we understand that all candidates are flawed. You might find Taibbi to be useful on banking issues, and that is fine. I would even agree.

But like I said - he's kind of an @sshole.

140. So NOW Taibbi is a SUPERMAN...

...who single handedly caused John Kerry and the whole entire Democratic Party to lose the election in 2004 because he observed the Kerry was wooden and boring.

CLUE for PBass:
Taibbi didn't let the cat out of the bag.
Everybody already knew.

109. Bullshit. Don't condemn the whole over the flaw of part. He plainspokenly opened up the

whole bullshit scenario of 2007 and 2008 to the public at large. He made economics accessible and understandable to the rest of journalists in media, as well. I'll keep reading everything he writes and says.

edit: man, I hate this 'kidding-on-the-square'/no-emoticon OP stuff

115. Judge for yourself: The original critique of Taibbi was for 3rd-Wayish praise to Republicans

for fighting TARP and we ARE talking about some exceedingly nasty Republicans here, including Inhofe

There's some point to: how should Taibbi do this without giving guys like Inhofe and others anything they doesn't deserve?

...............

Have a good day and . . .

Carry on:

118. Thank You Third Way Manny!

you are my new Third-Way Guru with telepathic powers! As I get older and more conservative, I sometimes find myself curious to see who these newfangled way-out leftist writers are! Got my hands on a Rolling Stone and tried to start reading that there Matt Tabby - my eyes burst in to flame like Officer Bologna hisself was flooding them with Sabre Red pepper foam! Thanks for saving me from my self!
