The magazine cover barely looks like the other "noncover" photos. It looks more like a "look alike" or some younger sister or something. Facial proportions are off. Skin looks different. She looks a different weight.

Color wise yes, but also a bit thinner. He jaw looks a tad "thinner" than in other photos. I suspect its the camera lens they used. Quite honestly, I like her "candid" look better. Never was a fan of the "over made up" look, nor the china doll schtick.

43. I don't understand the standard in which you used to judge her pic.....
|
Guess that you've decided that a woman of her age, and who is neither
a professional model or an actress made to look younger via surgery and injection is supposed to somehow look like the cover of a magazine at all times, including when taking candid photos. Even young women who are models and acting celebrities do not walk around looking like their magazine covers. Just the mere fact that you would have commented in that way, in this thread, gives us a better view as to the type of individual that you are, in particular when it comes to this woman. I thank you for that. |

45. Bad supposition
|
Try again.
The original post mentioned the superficiality. I was agreeing with that term. There is something fundamentally superficial about photographing someone to look like they don't look. Even more so to make them temporarily appear to be some approximation of a false "ideal". She's a good looking woman in her own right. It seems horribly supeficial to make her appear "differently" merely to conform to some ideal of what she "should" look like. As far as your suppositions. The reason that scientists do double blind studies is because it is very easy to find what you're looking for, even when it's not there. Your suppositions, and your supposed "better views" give us more insight into you, and what you are looking for, than anything about me. |

46. The fact that you have to post so many times to
|
justify your critique of a photo.....
and beyond that, the fact that you are a consistent harsh critic of The Obama administration in general says to me, that there really are times when if you don't have anything good to say, then saying nothing is a great option, if for no other reason, to demonstrate goodwill, and a lack of pettiness... Some people learned that from their parents... it's called home trainin'- http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=home%20trainin%27 . |

52. I was participating in the discussion
|
It is a discussion forum after all. And my original comment was based upon the OP's comment about the superficiality. Basically I was agreeing. It is superficial. It's almost the poster child for superficial. Take a perfectly good looking woman and make her look like something she isn't. The impled reason being that what she is isn't some how "good enough".

|
I know I have gained and lost 20 pounds like four times in the last four years. I guess Mrs. Obama could have, too. Plus, I think they have lighting, etc, in magazine cover photo shoots that are not readily available for candid shots. Hence, the 'candidness'.

And I suspect they used a wide angle lens too, it can change the apparent proportions of things in depth rather quickly. There's a definite "cover photo" aspect to the whole thing.

I suspect, a bit like the Clinton cover photo (and a similar Coulter cover), that a very wide angle lens was being used, which changes proportions between very small differences in depth.

Perhaps some people here will think that, but I think discussing such topics as self-doubt, early struggles, and wanting to help build self confidence in young girls. It simply is not superficial. What's wrong with have a beautiful black woman on the cover of a magazine who happens to hold ADVANCED degrees, is very accomplished and as an aside? Is married to the President of the United States of America? I'd rather see her - than Rihanna on the cover of a magazine. But that's me.
