Far right loses its collective mind over possible gun legislation

Far right loses its collective mind over possible gun legislation
Three weeks after Sandy Hook, Tea Partyers and right-wing bloggers are hinting at civil war if the government acts
By Don Terry, Southern Poverty Law Center

Whether the massacre of 20 Connecticut first-graders and six educators by a madman armed with an assault rifle in December will lead to meaningful gun control legislation is far from certain.

But nearly three weeks after the Dec. 14 bloodbath, the American far right – from elements of the Tea Party to bigoted bloggers to conspiracy theorists – is working itself into an absolute frothy uproar at even the possibility that it may become more difficult to purchase a military-style assault rifle or a magazine that carries dozens of bullets.

It’s reminiscent of the reaction that surrounded the 1994 assault weapons ban that expired in 2004. That legislation, which applied only to newly manufactured guns, helped fuel a powerful militia movement – one that has been eclipsed by the recent surge in the anti-government “Patriot” movement, which includes armed militias.

One particular rant that has gained traction on white supremacist websites was posted on Dec. 28 by a blogger named Bob Owens and is entitled “What you’ll see in the rebellion.” In the piece, Owens speculates about what would happen if the “gun grabbers … confiscatory fantasy plays out.” It has already has received more than 160 comments on Owens’ website, including this one: “Everyone talks of dying for their cause, because it’s glamorous. Killing for our cause is what it will take.’’

snip//

Tea Party.org is also sounding the alarm. In recent days, the organization has sent out a series of hysterical E-mails warning, for instance, that “the anti-gun coalitions, Communist Party, Neo-Nazis, Washington liberals, politically diseased politicians and the anti-freedom freaks with their feverish lust to remove our fundamental rights will stop at NOTHING.”

One E-mail screamed “Obama Communist Coup Underway America in Danger!” The post continued, “‘America’s Fraud President’ is tightening his deadly grip on America’s throat and a catastrophic coup is coming. Obama has yet to be sworn in and already he is preparing his minions for gun grabbing.”

more, if you can take it. I weep, and this scares the hell out of me...

4. I have NO problem with

responsible gun owners, but they are way over the top here, and there's so many of them!

2. This is who's in your corner when you fight against meaningful gun safety law.

You can carp about how rude we are to you, or how you're different, or whatever. But these are the people lining up to agree with you on this.

As I've said before, if you feel you're getting "broad brushed" as an inhuman monster, maybe it's because you're standing too close to the monsters.

There's doubt that anyone who posts that is a right wing troll.

9. Can you prove that they aren't?

My ultra right-wing Republican neighbors, who probably would dig up Ayn Rand's corpse and fuck it before they ended welfare and SNAP and drove the poor into slavery are extremely anti-gun. They want a complete ban. Are they liberal? Obviously not.

Just because you disagree on one topic doesn't mean they aren't liberals. It's based on one's economic and social views.

11. The Gun Militancy Movement Was Co-Opted By The Extreme Right A Long Time Ago.

Our resident DU Gun Enthusiasts are part and parcel of a hyper-conservative, Democrat-hating political movement. They prove this on a daily basis.

14. Is there some reason I have to or I should care?

They privilege their own hobby above human life. Whatever else they claim to be is inconsequential. If people are so selfish they refuse to agree to any precautions that save the lives of children--without basic regard for human life--the rest is meaningless. Robb had it right. If they stand with the NRA and the Tea Party, that reveals their values.

Some also happen to be anti-choice, anti-woman, rape apologists, and whine about racism against white men and feel themselves the constant victims of some sort of reverse sexism. Their sense of themselves as victims may help explain why they feel such a need to carry weapons. They post elaborate fantasies of public shootouts with bystanders all around. They write about emptying 100 bullets into an intruder, and even skinning them alive. They talk about violating laws about registering guns and over throwing a democratically elected government. Is their some reason it should matter whether such people imagine themselves to be liberal or conservative?

17. You'll have to excuse me if I chuckle at the accusation about not supporting saving children's lives

I've been called a child murderer and baby killer for decades now - I'm staunchly pro-choice. I used to volunteer to escort women into the clinics. I find the phrase funny after many years of having it lobbed by the most batshit wackadoodle people on the planet. And I would have loved to have had one of those vehicle mounted chain guns pointed at them while we escorted the women in. The anti-choice crowd is a violent terrorist supporting movement as we all know from past events.

That aside, I think the element of Sophism in this discussion is that if you oppose gun restrictions you are NRA or Tea bagger. That's why I presented the example of my extremely non-Democratic neighbors who oppose gun ownership. Life isn't that straightforward and simple and the world is an interesting shade of grey.

Food for thought.

18. that may be

but as far as I'm concerned there is no more important issue. So I much prefer a Republican open to reasonable gun control than a Democrat who refuses any restrictions. I also find it difficult to believe that degree of selfishness doesn't extend to other areas of life. particularly given other posts I've seen by gun zealots here on DU. I do not recall reading any of your previous posts, so I'm not speaking about you personally.

I'm glad to hear of your work with abortion rights groups. But I shouldn't have to point out to you that embryos and fetuses are not the same as 6 year old children.

Robb's point is well taken. When one stands with the far right on an issue, people are going to see him as sharing their values.

19. That is not always true

I agree with Ron Paul on Marijuana and war but I am no libertarian. I am a gun owner but test out close to Ghandi on the political scale. My politics are just on this side of socialism. Shrug.

I see a lot of that lately and find it odd on this site. There did not used to be such a "let's all walk in lockstep" tone to this board till the past year or so. I am not speaking to the subject at hand. And as for your response, please see post number one. Peace, Mojo

6. Sounds like the 1990's all over again

Except then it was Clinton after the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban was introduced.

Wait until you start hearing screams of UN black helicopters and blue-helmet soldiers on the streets of Washington DC.

I have already expressed my determination to re-up if they do. I'm 44, and my days of crewing a tank are 20 years in the past. But I still got what it takes. I'll blow their fat, shitty asses to the hell they deserve...

26. How the hell are these guys going to fight a rebelion form the comfort of their mama'a bacement?

Most of them can't even afford enough bullets to fill a couple of thirty round magazines.

Then there is this question? Do you think any of them have the balls to stand up to a tank like that guy in Tienanmen Square?

27. Routine, recurrent gun massacres like Sandy Hook or full out civil war. Hell of a choice these

'patriotic' Americans are forcing on us.

I will volunteer to put on body armor and learn to operate an AK-47 and join a real citizens militia to 'pry the weapons out of their cold dead hands', as the gun lovers love to threaten. After all, I've had 52 years on this planet. That's 46 years more than the students at Sandy Hook.

Repeal the blood soaked Second Amendment Now.
