Steubenville looks to be another Penn State.

http://localleaks.blogs.ru/

Seems like this has been going on for some time as well.
The main alleged perpetrators are referred to as "The Rape Crew".
Which likely points to other instances of sexual assault by these people.

Disgusting.

Even worse. Looks like they had help.

2. This is beyond disgusting.

I read about the release of the video tape this morning (couldn't watch), but did not look at the site you linked.

"Cody Saltsman: Saltsman was originally charged in the gang rape. After a private back-room meeting at Naples Pasta House restaurant in Steubenville between Saltsman’s father, the Sheriff – and a certain Mr. Teramana (a wealthy Steubenville resident) – Cody Saltsman’s charges were mysteriously dismissed. Saltsman is a former boyfriend of the victim of this attack, and it appears there is quite a bit of bad blood between them – adding a layer of vengence and viciousness that may explain the raw brutality of the attack upon this girl. Saltsman is perhaps one of the most repugnant individuals the LocalLeaks staff has ever encountered. His posts on Twitter and other social media show him to not only be completely callous regarding the horrendous abuse that he and his friends meted out upon their defenseless victim, but show clearly that this young man is an extremely dangerous sociopath who truly needs to be incarcerated.

Cody Saltsman sent many messages to people stating that “nobody breaks up with Cody Saltsman, Ill ruin that bitch”. This was a month before the rape. A few weeks later, Saltsman’s best friend – Trent Mays started texting the victim asking her for a date and pretending to like her and telling her over and over that everyone likes her and not to worry about Cody. He finally convinced her to let him meet her at her friends house and she remembers nothing past that point. A close personal friend of the victim received pics from her at 9:30 pm, and she was smiling and happy and with her group of girlfriends. An hour later she was unconscious and being viciously gang raped.

While the charges regarding the attack were dropped against Saltsman, he has provided ample evidence that he was present during this vicious gang rape – incriminating himself with multiple photos that he took of the victim during the various parties she was transported to. Examine these two photo’s, one posted by Saltsman to his Instagram account and the other posted to Twitter by another member of the “Rape Crew” closely. These images are of another unknown victim of the “Rape Crew” published by Saltsman in 2011."

But it appears they have help from powerful people that care more for championships than they do about protecting girls from predators.

79. if saltsman was there, looks like he's going to get off.

Cody Saltsman has asked to make a statement here to express his remorse for the photo and comments that he tweeted. It is also his desire and ours to clarify that we never had any evidence of his direct involvement in the subsequent events of that night. While he may have been present at various parties that evening, there has been no evidence of his involvement in the rape, nor has he been charged with any such crime.

We are happy to post his statement; it is below. We appreciate that Cody acknowledges that he was wrong to utilize social media for his part in this case and we believe that his remorse is genuine. We recognize that some things written here may have created the impression that Cody was involved in the alleged rape, and we wish to clarify that we have no evidence of any such involvement, and it was always the position of this blog that the truth would come out in a court of law – granted the case was moved to an adult venue as juvenile proceedings are generally sealed.

We will continue to cover this rape case and others; we will continue to report on corruption, favoritism, and cronyism regardless of where it occurs; and we will continue to rally against victim-blaming and misogyny. While the lawsuit against us has been resolved, it is clear from recent news coverage that people in positions of power will continue to abuse that power at the expense of others. By proposing to drop the lawsuit and make the statement below, Cody Saltsman has shown that perhaps he can – and we certainly hope he does – grow into a responsible, caring, and empathetic adult. His hometown certainly could use more empathetic and compassionate individuals who are willing to stand up and do the right thing.

http://prinniefied.com/wp/case-dismissed/#more-1357

This is after his family sued the blogger; the suit was dismissed with prejudice but somehow saltsman came out smelling like a rose.

i don't know what he posted but if it's anything like what was claimed i'm surprised at this outcome.

is the incredible lack of guilt, conscience and appreciation of the gravity (depravity) of this crime by all of those involved. I used to think that this was the kind of thing that hardcore, career criminals would do--not students. Why was NO ONE horrified about this?

Un-fucken-believably disturbing.

7. Federal Government and Media

If this is true the federal government should step in and try to prosecute these young men. The Justice Department, if it can, need to move in and take this case out of the hands of the locals. In addition, the media needs to give this story a great deal of attention.

11. Listen.

I've been struggling with a lack of adjectives for this. But here's one thing. If it is true that the prosecutor is the mother of one of the gang of boys and some of this happened at her house, and then she encouraged the girl an mother not to press charges and told them a horror story of how the girl would be dragged through the media to discourage them, she needs to be severely punished.

Did those two weeks allow evidence to be tampered?

I noticed this - an example of past covering up for criminal behavior of big red football player?:

http://www.wtov9.com/news/news/special-prosecutors-handle-jefferson-county-rape-i/nRLhZ/

STEUBENVILLE - Members of the Ohio Valley Black Caucus are questioning Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin's decision to testify at a sentencing hearing for former Steubenville High School and West Virginia University athlete Branko Busick.

Busick was placed on five years probation in a Monongahelia County Circuit Court after five character witnesses testified at the hearing on April 17.

Busick had pleaded guilty to two charges of felonious assault stemming from two incidents in 2011 in Morgantown.

STUPID? REally Sheriff? How about he admitted to rape, he was in the same house as the rape victim at the time the 12 minute video was shot so he was at least an accessory having knowledge of a crime, he slandered the girl mercilessly.

All of these are crimes.

If I were Ohio State, I'd be investigating how many students he raped at that school.

I can't say what we'd like to do to that kid up here, but suffice it to say, we'd wipe that criminal smirk off his nasty face.

They become enraged over "elitist" comments by "sports haters," but they never have a word to say about individual athletes who have engaged in shameful or criminal misconduct to harm others. Whatever happened to personal responsibility? Shouldn't athletes be treated as human beings instead of gods?

The point is that many sports fans seem to be indifferent about individual school athletes who hurt or harm other people away from the game, even if a felony has been committed (such as rape). Their only concern seems to be about how well their teams perform. How do you think accusations of rape against individual high-school and college football players are usually handled? Are the accusations seriously investigated, or are they usually regarded dismissively and covered up? Are many coaches known for holding their players accountable for the way they treat others away from the game, or is that just a matter of complete indifference to them?

We live in a society in which every institution is subjected to critical evaluation -- except for school sports, which are treated as a sacred cow. As I was growing up, I soon realized that the rules didn't apply to athletes. I soon was observing that a guy could be a complete jerk, a pathetic human being; but if he excelled at a sport, none of that mattered to most people, certainly not the fans.

Just to give an example, I recently learned that a guy whom I had admired in junior high had become a bully at his high school after he made the football team. (We actually weren't friends, and I went to another high school in the district. So, I didn't know how he was acting at the time. I did find out many years later when a friend of mine who had graduated from his high school told me about him, as well as the general problem that had existed at his high school of bullying being out of control because of indifference on the part of the coaches and the principal. Another friend of mine once purchased a used car from the father of one of the victims of bullying by my former junior-high classmate. As I'm about to relate, the father told my friend what had happened to his son and the tepid reaction of the principal.) As I said, I learned that my former junior-high classmate who had made the football team in high school had become a bully. One of his targets was a retarded boy who attended the school. Bullying a retarded person has got to be one of the lowest forms of bullying! Absolutely pathetic! He eventually was suspended from school for a few days. (Big deal! He probably enjoyed his suspension as a break from school. He should have been kicked off the football team.) Now, did he suffer any social repercussions from his disgraceful misconduct? Was he looked down upon by other students for this contemptible form of bullying? No, of course not! He was just as popular as ever simply because he was a football player! If he had been a non-athlete, he would have been subjected to scorn, and rightly so. No, his social standing remained intact!

Has any sportswriter or sports columnist ever written about such shameful incidents as the one I've just described? Well, I can only think of one; and he just retired recently. No, such instances of bullying are ignored by them! Their view (and the view of many other football fans) is that every single boy (no exceptions!) who dons a football uniform automatically becomes a hero and that athletes can do no wrong. Has the issue of bullying in school sports ever been discussed in the media or anywhere else (well, except online)? Of course, not! Because, after all, school sports are sacred and athletes rule the roost; and as we all know, sports build character!

126. You're broad brushing

I'm a sports fan, and I don't think any of that. The fact you'd imply that, shows you are really ridiculously out of touch and maybe need to get in touch with your own prejudices and perceptions. You seem to be pretty comfortable with edging towards saying EVERY SINGLE kid who dons a football uniform is an asshole and potential rapist.

The issues of jock culture and bullying have been addressed in many places, but seeing as you obviously have an aversion to sports, I'm guessing you don't have a subscription to Sports Illustrated, eh?

Furthermore, instances of bullying rarely go public. It is seen as a school matter, usually involving minors. Besides, if the bullying doesn't involve athletes, who covers it?

The biggest bully in my high school wasn't on the football team, he actually didn't even participate in extracurriculars. He ended up going to jail for armed robbery. The vast majority of the football team never bothered anyone.

In college (mine didn't have many sports or frats) the biggest scum and potential date rapist was a performing arts major and the grandson of a famous actor. Not a jock. The idea you can use power to get what you want comes as much from class and status as anything. The worst part of this Steubenville case is that many of the suspects weren't just jocks, but had parents with POWER. School board members and prosecuting attorneys? Holy shit, you don't think THAT had something to do with this?

Actually, I'm not. It's just that I grew up seeing how crazy the sports culture was in my school district. I have several close friends who played football in high school who would deplore what's happened at Steubenville. One of them even played football at the university where he earned his degree in sociology. He's a feminist who rejects machismo.

As far as stereotyping is concerned, I became quite familiar from my own personal experience growing up with the negative stereotyping of nonathletic boys as "sissies," "wimps," and "fags." A New York sociology professor named Patricia Cayo Sexton once wrote a book (still in print) in which she denounces boys who have no interest in sports as "feminized males." A bit demeaning, I'd say. When I read it, I truly experienced how a black person or a Jew feels who happens to examine racist hate literature.

As a boy I learned about machismo before I even heard the word. Have you ever wondered if boys who have no interest in sports might not have such an easy time growing up in a society whose popular culture is saturated with sports, a society in which masculinity is defined in terms of athletic prowess? A childhood friend of mine who played football in high school (and is still very much a fan today) recently told me that most of his teammates had regarded all the nonathletic guys at their school as being inferior. Another friend of mine who had also played football the same time as my childhood friend at that high school also told me recently that he never saw a more insecure group of guys in his life. He said they were always proving their "masculinity" over and over again, usually at the expense of guys who weren't even on the team and just wanted to be left alone. What I've just said is not something that I've made up in my own mind, but is what was told to me by guys who were on the team. Their words, not mine. I didn't put those words in their mouths.

No, I've never looked at Sports Illustrated, as I was guilty of being a "sissy" as a boy for not having an interest in any sport. In the last few years, though, I have been working out at a local health club on a bodybuilding program. I've even spent a small fortune on personal trainers, but I guess that doesn't count. I must say, though, that my current health club experience has been completely different from the mandatory P.E. experience of my boyhood even from a therapeutic standpoint. This was the old P.E. that was exclusively centered around sports, often without any instruction in the sports themselves! A mandatory class that was completely useless to nonathletic boys, who lived in fear every school day of being humiliated or bullied. A class that did not provide any exercise programs or weight training for the nonathletic boys, who basically were treated as nonpersons. This was my personal experience and was also the experience of every other middle-aged nonathletic guy I've talked to over the decades who was forced to take the old P.E. This is the sort of P.E. that many people are pushing today. Guess what? I never got any exercise in P.E.! Fancy that!

Oops, I just noticed the time. A friend of mine is expecting me to call him. As a matter of fact, he's one of the former high-school football players I've just mentioned. What a coincidence! I'm not lying or kidding about having to go; I'm being perfectly serious. So, I'm going to have to bid you a fond adieu and perhaps converse with you another time. Have a good evening!

170. I had told you in a PM that I would no longer post in any more of these Steubenville topics;

Last edited Sun Jan 6, 2013, 02:19 AM - Edit history (2)

but now that I've thought about it and how snotty and arrogant your comments were, I've changed my mind. I'll post one more time, and then that will be it.

You have a curious set of priorities. A teenage girl likely was knocked out and raped repeatedly, and she will never find out who all the thugs were who did this to her. If the accusations are true, she will have to live with this for the rest of her life, perhaps experience flashbacks. She could possibly commit suicide. No doubt she will be raped again in the courtroom by sleazy defense attorneys. In fact, I suspect there will not be any conviction. (After all, all the defense attorney has to do is pack the jury full of football fans.) Yet where have you chosen to direct your anger? You're more mad at me for my comments, in fact, than you are over what may have happened to this girl! That's a wonderfully warped set of priorities you've got there. In fact, you are more concerned about the image of football players than you are about victims of rape when the perps have been jocks! Absolutely pathetic!

You talk about those with power. Well, guess what? They happen to be FANS. All the townspeople who wanted this scandal to be swept under the rug are FANS. The vicious punks in the video are FANS. Yet you gripe at me for my observations about fans. I stand by my comments. They're based upon personal observations over decades. Your snotty little comments aren't going to intimidate me. I gave you specific instances of how sick the "jock culture" is, yet you have conveniently ignored them.

Do you honestly believe that if the two (well, there seems to have been a lot more than two) perps had been members of, say, the Chess Club, they would have been treated the same way? No, there would have been no coverup; and they definitely would have been prosecuted. The perps were protected precisely because they were football players; but since you're a sports fan, that doesn't bother you. You don't consider that to be an injustice.

I never did say all bullies were jocks or all jocks were bullies. That's nonsense. Those were words you put in my mouth.

I appreciate investigative reporting. My sister once did investigative reporting as a newspaper reporter under difficult circumstances. She upset big money people with her reporting. The sports media is nothing but a propaganda mill. I'd never consider them to be a journalistic institution. They're more in the realm of Joseph Goebbels. They will get upset if, say, a professional baseball player has abused steroids; but that's just because the use of steroids affects the outcome of games. Committing gang rape doesn't affect playing ability or the outcome of a game; so, it's not so objectionable to the sports columnists. Besides, they've got to uphold that phony "hero" image and not upset the fans. The sports media has shown a marked tendency to ignore accusations of rape by football players and other athletes. If Sandusky had raped young girls instead of boys, there wouldn't have been such a big outcry. I stand by what I say because I've seen it for years. You're blinded by your own prejudice if you can't see that.

Again, you're not half as upset with what may have happened to the girl as you are with me because I refuse to put jocks on a pedestal. Absolutely amazing!

Oh, yeah, I'm sure you really do care that Odin2005 and other DU members were bullied by jocks in high school. But I suspect you make a distinction in any sympathy you might have for victims of bullying. Because of your favoritism and bias, I suspect you don't have quite as much sympathy for victims of bullying when the perps have been jocks. Well, after all, Odin2005 probably was asking for it.

These crimes happen because of people like you who insist that school athletes, instead of being treated as human beings, be put on pedestals and NOT be held accountable for despicable conduct away from the game. I speak as the father of two daughters: You're not much better than a rape enabler.

You basically said "Why no condemnation of these INDIVIDUAL ATHLETES". Well, first of all, who is heaping praise on any of them? These guys are scum. I've seen no one defend them. So really, I don't know what the hell you are talking about.

You called out "Where are all the DU football fans?" like they are a collective brain trust. You made it about someone other than the victims. You made it a call out, basically.

I can see that was your "Do you still beat your wife?" question.

You basically chose to smear anyone who participates in sports, or mere fans of sports, of participating in some mass conspiracy across the country to defend them and others. You're broad brushing. There are hundreds if not thousands of towns across America where these things aren't going on. There are hundreds of thousands of student athletes who've never hurt a fucking soul, and gone on to do good things. But they are all in on it, huh?

There was nothing in any of my posts that defended these creeps. Go and try and find it. You can't. Unless you continue to lie, misrepresent and make up shit about what I posted.

Then you top it off by rambling on, accusing me of endorsing bullying as okay if it is by jocks. Wow. At that point, there's not much more I can say to you. I'm sure you think you are right about that. I have no doubt, in your mind, you actually believe that. If that gets you through your life....if that makes you feel better actually believing that....feel free to go ahead and do so. You obviously need it for some reason. It's sad, but if it gets you through one more day, go ahead.

And now I'm going to step away from this conversation, because YOU'RE being rude, arrogant, and condescending. You have issues, transferring and projecting all of that on to people just because they have the nerve to occasionally attend or watch an event you find beneath your superior breeding and intellect.

It doesn't really fit as there are good and bad people in all of the above named institutions...and some of us have worked very hard to clean up that kind of behavior among actives and alumni. We have to be strict, we're the lightning rod that everybody else blames their shit behavior on.

Please don't confuse us or even the tough enforcement and oversight of the NCAA and NAIA over collegiate student-athletes for the depravity of some HS psychopaths whose parents are shielding them.

Sincerely,

47. The problem is the HS psychopaths often get away with it, . . .

. . . as will probably happen in this case. Pack a jury full of football fans; and the defense will win almost every time, as the statistics show. Some of the HS psychopaths go on to make themselves felt on college and university campuses.

Incidentally, do site searches on "p.e. bullying," "phys ed bullying," and "jock bullying" and check out the pages of links to various DU posts. Interesting reading . . .

By the way, what have sportswriters and sports columnists such as Rick Reilly said about this scandal? Any outrage from them?

applies to all high school and college athletes. I have two nephews who play college football for a small Christian college. There is no way in hell the culture that is active in that Ohio team is in any way represented in my nephews' team. The players that are 21 are not even allowed to drink alcohol during the football season. There is enough peer pressure, the good kind, to keep these young men on the straight and narrow. (They finished 11-1).

What I have read about this case makes me retch.

. . . this happened to you. (I wouldn't consider this smilie to be perfect for the occasion, but it's the best I could find.)

Relating to what you've just said, I don't have PTSD; but I did grow up with an irrational fear over a period of decades that was the residue of suppressed memories of physically violent bullying I had experienced in my preteen years due to the fact that I was short for my age.

School bullying is particularly contemptible. Many bullied kids are vulnerable because they have some problem such as a bad home life, lack of self-confidence, feelings of inferiority, whatever. The parents of bullies who have no problem with it are scum. Bullies are cowards. Sometimes (but not always) they're driven by feelings of insecurity. Actually, it doesn't matter why they do it. I know for a fact that some will do it simply because they can. In other words, adult authorities allow them to do it because of their high social status or whatever.

Anyway, I just wanted to express my sympathy and let you know that I do understand why you're "hyperbolic." I guess I am, too.

18. The boy who hosted one of the houses where the girl was raped is the son of the prosecuting attorney

Steubenville, Ohio has long been know as a very corrupt little town that is under the control of the Mob.

The leak suggests that the boy who hosted the party in question was not punished because his mother is the prosecuting attorney for Jefferson County, where Steubenville is located.

At other links, there are tweets from the sixteen year old girl's former boyfriend - another football player - who said that he was angry that she broke up with him so he arranged for her to be drugged, kidnapped, and gang raped in revenge.

There is no evidence that the girl went partying or got drunk. She was lured to a friend's house, given a date rape drug and when she was unconscious, she was driven around town to various houses where she was raped over and over again. The rapists recorded the rapes and tweeted them along with foul comments.

I know it wouldn't matter if she had gone willingly into the situation but what part of what makes THIS case particularly heinous is that this girl was set up by her ex boyfriend, and that the entire football team participated in this crime.

We wonder why there are so many scandals involving football programs in colleges. It's because some of the players have been encouraged to grow up to be sociopaths by their coaches, like this:

But Coach Saccoccia’s regime doesn’t just extend to protecting these boys from the dire consequences of serious criminal activity. Mr. Saccoccia has wielded his considerable power to form a sort of social and academic bubble of protection around these boys in order to insulate them from even the most basic daily responsibilities faced by any other high school student in Steubenville. The students in the classes at Steubenville High School are carefully segregated. Football players take their exams separate from other students, and they are allowed and even encouraged to cheat. The teachers assist the players in cheating on state tests, and this results in a 100 percent pass rate by all football players on these exams.

76. The police chief said some people are "simply jealous" of the football team.

Bolded emphasis by me:

"It has left McCafferty, the police chief, fuming and frustrated.

For weeks after the girl’s parents came forward, he again pleaded to the other partygoers to come forward with information about the possible sexual assault. Only one did, he said.

“Everybody on those Web sites kept saying stuff that wasn’t true and saying, why wasn’t this person arrested, why aren’t the police doing anything about it,” he said. “Everybody wanted to incriminate more of the football players, some because some of the other schools in the area are simply jealous of Big Red.”

All this new "techie" stuff that Gen Xers grew up with, us Boomers/politicians are struggling to catch up.

Now, however, we have to watch the backlash ... considering anything that shows up in the media, as grounds to throw out the cases based on public prejudice. That's what I see happening with the Steubenville rapists and their sick cheering squad...attorney has already started it. That would turn this public accountability of shame into another notch on their belts, so to speak, as they are clearly shame-less.

At least it's a new social and very public conversation.

Not in any way to minimize the horrible acts committed or the suffering of the victim, but teenagers do some incredibly stupid things.

When the adults use their position, power and influence to cover up a crime of this magnitude they are really the ones who should be paying the much higher price.

I can see all this happening in a sports-crazy town. I grew up in a sports-crazy school and it was made pretty clear to everyone that athletes were the only people that actually mattered.

To have things go so far as to have a rape gang covered up though...... The adults involved are as much animals as the young men involved.

Athletics should be ended forever at schools like this one, college sports programs can receive sanctions, even the "death penalty". High Schools should receive the same. This football team should cease to exist forever with no student allowed to transfer and play elsewhere.

The 16-year-old girl has been personally attacked with the purpose of discrediting her from the very beginning. In case you haven't noticed, that happens to a lot of rape victims.

Sure, it's all about the football program. If a player harms another person (bullying, assault), that's just too bad. That's really not important. Only football is important. Jock privilege is the reality. But this certainly isn't unique to Steubenville. It's happened in other communities. Ever hear of Glenn Ridge? You should read Our Guys by Bernard Lefkowitz. You might learn something.

If you're not troubled by the disgusting video with its pro-rape sentiments, then what can I say except Rah! Rah! Rah!

knows everyone in the town. That Sheriff has the best reputation of any law enforcement
officer in the entire Ohio Valley as far as defending kids. Besides that he is not in charge of the case the victim's family filed their complaint with the Steubenville Police Department. He said he has assisted them when asked but it is their case. The Sheriff caught hell a few years ago for having a baby taken off of a mother because she had the baby in the hot sun at the county fair with a severe sunburn. Anyway that case also made DU and people were calling him a thug, tyrant and a dictator. Well a few months after the child was returned to the mother it came up dead from abuse.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/17/sports/high-school-football-rape-case-unfolds-online-and-divides-steubenville-ohio.html?pagewanted=all

That was simply because people were asking why more of the athletes involved were not charged. Those involved posted videos, tweets, FB posts, and pictures themselves and ADMITTED their involvement. You can try to defend all you want, but the more the people involved in the crime speak, the more they show their guilt and in the case of a police chief who would make such a comment as that one above, extreme bias against the victim.

They all need to recuse themselves and let the Feds do the investigation...if all the evidence hasn't already been hidden. I know Anonymous has found an reposted some information for safe keeping online before it gets scrubbed. There is plenty of evidence freely available.

70. You can't back that up... and are you a complete moron?

People are not "going off on all these conspiracies".

You had people live tweeting the rape, photographing the rape (with many more than the two accused rapists showing up in various shots), video of people bragging about being present at the rape, and numerous comments from locals worried more about the sports program than what happened to this poor girl who was drugged and gang raped.

With very clear photographic, video, and twitter evidence, how can you possibly be so stupid as to think a GANG RAPE is being blown out of proportion?

With the Newtown news, I couldn't see the bodies or supposed 2nd shooter firing shots so my access to information was completely dependant on what the media wanted to say.

Here though, I don't even need the fucking media to tell me anything. Video, photos, tweets, and facebook comments were posted directly by the people involved graphically recording and documenting what went on.

He had the baby taken from her until she cleaned up her act. he's laughing, he thinks he's funny...and most of the people in the room seem to be laughing too.

A second assailant had been charged but the charges were dropped. All the other people in the videotapes weren't charged. The son of the prosecuting attorney, at whose house one of the gang rapes took place, was not charged. And there's every reason to believe that the single person charged might have had their charges dropped, too. "No evidence."

But your high school football team had another great year, didn't it? And apparently that is what really matters in Steubenville, Ohio.

for February way before this internet lynch mob got involved. There have been anonymous tweets making charges on several students with no evidence, parents have had to take their kids out of school for their own safety. Anyone can make a charge about anyone on the internet if it is true or not. Apparently you are guilty until you prove your innocence today.

true. But one thing they close at 7:00 PM even on weekends. For the reason a drug war has been going on for about a year. And you don't want to be downtown after dark. Naples is in a high crime area which is a shame. My Step-Son who was an All State Swimmer in West Virginia had most of his swim meets at Steubenville High School. And I read that they have 19 football coaches at the high school. But the per capita income in Steubenville is less than $35,000. It sounds like every penny this community has is being poured into their high school boy's sports program.

You should read the testimony of all the witnesses. They all said under oath that they had taken multiple photos of the rapes while they were taking place but deleted them all. The local authorities couldn't figure out how to get the deleted photos. Right. Every divorce attorney in the world knows how to obtain deleted photos and texts from phones and computers. But the authorities in Steubenville just couldn't figure out how to obtain the evidence that the witnesses themselves admitted that they had.

and even after they are confronted with the evidence they refuse to believe it. That is disgraceful. Can't anyone accept that there were just two rapists not the entire football team?
An anonymous person posts a story about a meeting between the Sheriff, the father of one of the kids involved and a Mr. Taramana and everyone takes that as gospel. What evidence is there about such a meeting? They claim there are pictures but nobody has produced them
so police had to destroy them.

then you point a finger at those DEMANDING the corrupt pay.

it is enabling. the rapes happened because of a town of enablers.

i have said in the past, and will say now, that i am even more angered at the enablers. they are cowards. they know better. they claim to be better. but they allow.... the ugly to happen.

and here you sit, a couple days now, doing the same as the corrupt in that town, or those that jsut do not want friends hurt, because those friends are more important that a mere girl. a girl that was ganged rape.

keep telling yourself that it was just those two. sheeeit, it is a fact that you will. do not be a part of the solution, be the part of the problem.

I gave you a link to a news report from last October that cites the testimony of all the witnesses. They all testified that they took pictures of rapes on their cellphones. Some of the pictures remain. The judge said that there was clear evidence for this.

You just don't want to believe it.

girl. The police have asked any witnesses to come forward and as of now they only have witnesses that saw those two. You say the judge has clear evidence. Everyone is claiming that nobody was charged until Anonymous got involved, that isn't true because the judge said that back in October 12, 2012 before anyone got involved with protests..

223. That's incorrect. You obviously haven't read any of the news reports.

At the probable cause hearing at least five witnesses testified that they had pictures of the rapes. They testified that they had deleted the pictures. The police were incompetent if they were unable to retrieve those files from the witnesses' phones. I don't believe that they tried.

"Everybody" is NOT claiming that "nobody was charged until Anonymous got involved." Many of us are noting that the testimony of the witnesses, not to mention the video created by a participant, indicates that many more than two people were involved in the hours' long assault on this child. There are laws against accessory to rape. There are laws against providing alcohol to underage children. There are laws against putting naked photos of underage children on blogs. It's quite obvious that there is an ongoing cover up by local authorities to ignore all these criminal violations, blame only two minors (one of whom happens to be black), and sweep everything else - including obvious criminal culpability on the part of adults - under the rug. That's when Anonymous stepped in.

224. There have been parents that had to take their kids out of school

because someone posted something on facebook or a tweet. The Sheriff said there was an accusation one kid was involved when he wasn't even in Jefferson County at the time. They say there were pictures that were deleted, you say the cops could still have got them. I don't know if they can or not or if they ever even existed in the first place. The fact is you can't put someone in prison on a picture that they can't produce.
One thing the victim's attorney Bob Fitzsimmons has made his name on high profile civil cases like this. You can bet there will be civil suits against the school and any adults that enabled the mess. That is why Bob Fitzsimmons took the case, that is his specialty. It probably won't cost the family a dime unless he gets a big settlement out of it.
The Sheriff has been in office nearly 30 years and he is the best known law enforcement
person in the entire valley, he has a reputation of standing up for kids. As far as gambling and other things I have heard stories that he is as dirty as you could get. He has always stuck up for kids though.

These sick creeps outed themselves.

I will judge them on what they present of themselves to the world.

They are gangrapers of 15-year-old girls, they are criminal and they proved it.

There was coverup by the prosecuter and coaches and the sheriff, no matter how much you love the asshole, and there is obviously a culture in that town that made those boys think it was perfectly fine to brag abut the rapes they committed.
and to go so far as to record themselves raping their victims! What a sick place that made those kids think they would face no punishment!

They even call themselves the Rape Crew.

You call yourself a rapist, and brag about it, and send pictures about it around and I most certainly will pass judgment on you.

But to some, a teenage girl is just collateral damage, not nearly as important as a goddamned game. If Steubenville cared about its reputation, it's got a piss poor way of showing it.

It's customary to attack the victim, to make up shit. They SAY they have a text message. Have you seen it?

I haven't. But I have seen the other pics, some tweets and some video that makes clear what kind of "boys" these are.

A defense attorney will say ANYTHING to deny client culpability - and fools buy it every time

Because they just don't want to SEE the reality that rapists are among them. They don't want to sully their beautiful minds, so they will eat up every technique the attorneys feed them.

In the first case, she doesn't know who raped her - she was DRUGGED UNCONSCIOUS.

In the second case, these kids have told you, me and everyone else wehat they are.

They call THEMSELVES the "Rape Crew."

They bragged about it. They are rapists, and they told you and showed you.

But the defense has a tweet!

FFS, I've had enough of the apologists tonight.

I just hope that girl knows that many of us are grieving with her. I hope she knows that we have her back, that we care, and that SHE is not the criminal here.

I hope she knows that, because there sure are a lot of folks turning that knife those boys stuck in her. Every time they excuse the jocks who raped her.

and post video and pics of yourself committing the crime, you LOSE the presumption of innocence.

The trial is for the details. They already PROVED their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Secondly, how could this drugged girl ( have you SEEN the pics from Saltzman's phone where they drag the girl like she's already dead around? She wasn't exactly able to identify anyone ) even know who had raped her? How do we know she even sent the text?

Or does that not enter your mind at all here?

I just know this, as a female, I am sick to death of girls and women being treated like nothing, like they don't matter. This girl matters to me. Her pain matters to me. The horror she went through matters to me. Others might dismiss it as a "so what?" I can't do that.

I know about that horror because her attackers showed us who they are. THEY did that. I didn't have to assume anything.

And I know that this young woman needs support, because the defense is going to attack her unmercifully. As if her gang rape weren't already enough. They are going to call this 15-year-old child a slut, a whore, say she was asking for it, find people to lie about her, attack her parents, her grades, her clothes, her friends. This is why rape goes unreported, and why she and her family backed down when the fucked up sick perverted prosecutor cajoled and betrayed this young woman to protect her precious little rapist son.

In a just world, this would never happen. Second best would be for her attackers and their enablers to stand up and take their punishment. They and their town refused to do the right thing, so they got exposed.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Anonymous, for treating this girl's life as important, for caring so much about a human being others treated like trash.

Thank you, and to the girl herself, I am sorry they will see nothing better to do than attack you. You are 15. You should not have to be dealing with this crap because THE RAPE CREW and the SHERIFF in that town and the COACHES in that school and the PROSECUTOR who let her home be used as a place of your torture made really bad choices. Because they used you like you weren't even another person. I am so sorry.

Jane Doe, I hope you can stay strong as they continue to rape you for their own benefit.

You matter. You are not at fault. You DID NOT DESERVE THIS.

These threads ARE so draining. It boggles the mind that NO ONE helped her at all. How that must feel to know that you were abused in the worst ways, and not one person cared enough to help you. Horrifying and lonely and soul-crushing.

That speaks to a culture in Steubenville - STUPIDVILLE - of abject FEAR of the Rape Crew. Other kids must be terrorized by these kids. The other party goers no doubt know that the sheriff is a corrupt asshole, that the coaches and parents will protect the rapists. Why bother reporting something that none of the adults give a damn about prosecuting?

So the whole town just lets rape and torture happen because the whole goddamned town must live in complete and total fear of the Good Old Boys and the football team.

I hope this young woman gets good counseling, and that she knows that NOBODY - even her rapists - deserves to be treated as they treated her.

Nobody deserves that. Ever.

He's a feminist who rejects machismo and has also been a critic of the dark side of school sports. (Oh, my! You mean there actually is such a thing?) He makes a distinction between "athletes" (those who enjoy playing the game, but haven't become so insufferably arrogant about it) and "jocks" (athletes who use their ludicrously high social status to abuse and harm others, such as the Steubenville thugs -- the pride and joy of that town). Recently he told me (incidentally, he hasn't played football in decades; he happens to be in his late sixties), "I am an athlete. I am NOT a jock."

I fear the thugs are going to get away with it. Now, guess what happens to guys who commit rape and get away with it. THEY RAPE AGAIN! Someone else's daughter or daughters will be traumatized for life. So much for justice! But don't mess with the football program! That's more important than people!

Incidentally, Miss Proud whatever your username is, I've put you under complete "Ignore"
(whatever it's called). (I did that after my lengthy post above in which I said I had changed my mind about not posting in any more Steubenville topics. I haven't read any of your responses to me since your last one last week.) You also won't be able to send me a PM. (What a wonderful feature!) So, go ahead and throw your worst insults at me. I won't be reading them and will never see them. You'll just be wasting your time. So, ha ha ha!

By the way, I do admire individual athletes who are decent human beings. But they didn't get that way by participating in sports, as so many incessantly claim! They brought their values to the game.

191. bryant, pittsburgh steelers quaterback rapist. these rapists are on national tv held up as gods

cause they play well. but... they are rapists. courts wont condemn then, and i will call it.

i like football. i like all sports. i was in competitive sports for half my life. serious shit. gave me so many wonderful things.

i encourage my boys. they are in it too.

and we discuss this often. my oldest so going to college and he will be put in the athletic dorms. i have told him my issue, boys he would never hang out with, are now going to be in his space.

i agree with your professor. and those going after you on this thread should be honest about it all. there are a lot in professional football to admire. and then there is the rapist quaterback we applaud, that we should condemn.

193. These people are rape enablers. Football is their sacred cow/calf, and they're blind to truth.

Don't worry about me. I'm avoiding their comments. I've even put one of them on "Ignore." I prefer not to be around such people, since they're mindlessly close-minded and aren't receptive to reason. They have no sympathy for anyone whose life was ever made miserable by jocks. I wouldn't give these posters the time of day in real life.

I hope none of them have a son who is uncoordinated or simply has no interest in sports (WHAT?! THAT'S A CRIME AGAINST NATURE!!!). They would psychologically castrate such a boy! Well, after all, such boys are effeminate and inferior!

195. that is what made me fall in love all over again with husband. we had such a bright, joyful,

articulate, upright, intellectual son when he was real young. no real interest in sports. a lot of sensitive in him. and my husband totally embraced him every step of the way. every. step. of. the. way.

in later years my son found his footing in a sport he enjoyed, that gave him what he wanted from a sport. strength, fitness, confidence, hardwork, ect.... (crosscoutnry and track). so father got the athletic son. but, when son was young, there was none of that. and hubby loved him regardless. i loved how he bonded and took care of that very different boy.

196. Hey, I've taken up bodybuilding late in my life. I've gained muscular development . . .

. . . and self-confidence I never had before, not to mention all the exercising I need to do to keep my blood sugar level under control. My health club experience is therapeutic. Incidentally, I certainly wasn't introduced to bodybuilding or any other kind of exercise program in mandatory "sports only" boys' P.E. -- thanks to the sports culture, which shortchanged and humiliated nonathletic boys in useless mandatory P.E. classes. I got no exercise at all in mandatory P.E.; and, in fact, there was no education in "Physical Education"!

Thanks to our wonderful sports culture, boys who have no interest in sports likely will be bullied and for no good reason; and they will have to fight to gain any self-esteem. Jocks view nonathletic guys as being inferior. They fail (nay, refuse) to recognize that respect is a two-way street!

199. agreed. a person that was immersed in it all my life and main focus of our family...

to a person that was bullied by it.

there is nothing wrong recognizing the truth in it. as a matter of fact, protecting the ugly is so much more work and painful than ever acknowledging the reality.

167. you can't imagine the shame it is causing the father and grandfather of one of the perps? If they

had ANY shame, they would have dragged that sick, twisted little thug off to the police themselves.

SHAME? I don't give a flying fig for their "SHAME"-- if they have done nothing to help bring these rapists to justice, I don't give a DAMN for their "shame". they should be ashamed of having such a monster in their family. I have not one atom of sympathy for them, since they have clearly done nothing to bring this crime to justice.

171. word from nodianos fathers "my son never raped anyone nor did his friends"

https://twitter.com/KYAnonymous/status/287322809691160577

this is what the father chose to do with his time. instead of commenting on the filth coming out of his sons mouth about a 16 yr old girl brutalized, or discussing his shame with a son that if not particpated, watched and then mouthed off for the world to see, or how sad he is that anyone would put another human being htru that, or that he wished her healing and crimes paid....

this is what the man said.

nah, not impressed with the man. and no wonder his son is such a piece of trash.

the apple does not fall far from the tree. learned behavior.

135. There is a trial scheduled next month and that decision was made

way back on October 12, 2012 not since this internet trial. The two alleged rapists were arrested and released on bail and did not play ball. The victim has Bob Fitzsimmons as her attorney probably the first choice of any attorney in the Ohio valley. Did you see the attorney for one of the boys tonight on CNN? He has a text message from the victim saying she knows she wasn't raped. That has been known by all parties involved with the case, but because of all the media attention it is now public.

152. I don't believe that text message BS

anymore than I believe that if I fell into a wardrobe I'd wind up in Narnia. Come on. Really? She was drugged unconcious but she knows she wasn't raped? That has been known by all the parties involved with the case? All the parties that were involved in the pre-meditated rape and who bragged about it on the internet? All the parties who witnessed it? All the parties involved in the cover-up? Of course they're going to say there's a text.

Look, I know you're trying to maintain the whole presumption of innocence thing, and that's noble, but for the love of Mike, take off your blinders and really look at the evidence. Think about the girl. She's someone's daughter. She could be yours, or your granddaughter, your niece. These are not good boys who got drunk and stole a car. These are animals who stole a girl's innocence. You're so worried about innocence, think about that. Her innocence was stolen. Publicly. With no regard for her whatsoever. And I have absolutely no regard for the worthless pieces of pond scum who did this to her, before, during, and after the fact. None.

I'm sorry, but this case really has me riled, and your blasé attitude is not helping.

164. Why does the VICTIM have to hire her own attorney?????!!!!!

The victim of a crime is supposed to be represented by the people. The fact that her family has felt it necessary to hire their own attorney shows how sick this is.

If you were gang raped would you expect to have to pay thousands of dollars to hire your own attorney?

221. actually that's not how it works

In any criminal case the prosecutor represents the state, not the victim. Naturally, they'd advocate for the victim in order to win the state's case, but they aren't representatives of the victim in the same way that a defense attorney represents the defendant. The prosecutor for instance isn't obligated to take the wishes of the victim into account nor even inform them concerning any plea deals. I never thought this was right since it leaves victims without their own counsel unless they employ one on their own to look out for their particular interests. I always believed that prosecutors should BOTH represent the state as well as the victim. Our entire justice system is designed around protecting the accused while victims are left high and dry with no one to specifically represent their interests unless they can afford to pay for their own counsel to do so. It's an unfairly balanced system that favors the accused.

222. I understand, and that's clearly what's going to happen here.

I have no confidence that the prosecution will do a good job in this upcoming trial. The defense attorneys will be trying to get their clients found not guilty. There is no role for the attorney of the victim in the trial. Even if the family has hired an attorney, he can't help with the criminal trial. I wonder if the family is considering a civil suit.

I was once a young man, but hell if I would even talk about a young woman like that, much less BRAG about such evil acts.

It is not youth to blame, I am not sure what it is, but it is not a good thing and on that we can all agree i think.

180. In post-industrial America

the town's economy revolves around crime--bookies for the high-school football games, alcohol and drugs for the athletes, and covering up a string of kidnapping and sexual assaults. And the town prosecutor is the mother of one of the alleged assailants. How proud she must be.

What a horrific place.

There was one perpetrator at Penn State, Sandusky, and officials covered it up. There is absolutely no evidence any of the players were involved or even knew about it, save for McQueary who witnessed Sandusky in the act. The players are victims as well.

I hope their educational opportunities won't suffer in the meantime.

But the rape victims will have to live with their trauma for the rest of their lives. I'm not sure rape victims receive enough support from others. (Incidentally, one of Sandusky's victims was bullied so badly by classmates of his who were Paterno fans at his high school that he had to drop out, and this was during his senior year.) Their suffering will continue indefinitely . . .
