Unanimous Senate Confirmations Part of Deal

Unanimous Senate Confirmations Part of Deal

by Mokurai

At 5 PM on Wednesday, Jan. 2, Harry Reid, some other Senate Democrats and 0 Senate Republicans passed a raft of confirmations by unanimous consent, as part of a deal with Mitch McConnell to keep his caucus away while business got done. It was on C-SPAN, but reporters were all working the fiscal cliff deal, particularly the House shenanigans. Lawrence O'Donnell let the cat out of the bag on his 10 PM show, The Last Word. Don't believe me? Here, you can watch it yourself. The relevant part starts at 3:52:10.

I ASK UNANIMOUS CONSENT THE SENATE PROCEED TO EXECUTIVE SESSION TO CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING NOMINATIONS CALENDAR NUMBERS 870, 871, 878,...

Harry Reid's actions yesterday were couched in the driest of dry-as-dust Senate protocol, referring to nominees only by number. They were very nearly revolutionary when measured against events of the last few years, in which Republicans filibustered even the most routine appointments for many months, and showed implacable hostility to several. Even the thought of Elizabeth Warren running the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was too much for them. Apparently Reid and McConnell agreed to let all of the confirmations go through that would pass with large majorities if they could be brought to the floor. McConnell's part of the deal appears to have been to let the other Republicans think that the Senate was adjourning while all of this went on. Could this be an attempt to defuse the push for filibuster reform?

As far as I know, this deal does not include an administrator for ATF, but it does include numerous judges, some other administration officials, and some ambassadors. I thank Just Bob, who gave us the link to the lists of who got through. Somebody will update the lists of who remains stuck. We will have an ambassador to Kenya, which is actually funny given Republican attitudes.

Please post the earliest signs of Right wing betrayal, shock, and outrage that you can find in the comments. I still don't see this story anywhere but C-SPAN and MSNBC.

What Harry Reid did today at 5:03pm will make your day

by BillyElliott

Just a quick diary to spread this wonderful video of Lawrence O'Donnell tonight. It's a must-see segment about what Sen. Reid did alone on the Senate floor today, a truly beautiful thing to watch as so many Obama nominees get confirmed with 100 votes.

<...>

Here's a bit of the text:

“Harry Reid, who every day does much more than most people in the news media realize, and definitely accomplishes much more than the news media ever reports, pushed through pages and pages of nominations for President Obama yesterday when everyone was focused on what the House would do on the fiscal cliff vote. And Harry Reid did that with the active but invisible help of Mitch McConnell who did his part to make sure that no Republicans would vote against any of those nominations. And what did the United States Senate do today, that dysfunctional United States Senate? According to the news media, absolutely nothing.”

3. Watched that on CSPAN 2 as it happened

and chuckled yet again, at what they always do at the end of the year - that few pay attention to. These are the types of things that people should take time to watch if they can. All sorts of stuff goes into effect during these "sneaky" flurries of unanimous consents... although occasionally, a member will be sitting there in-waiting to pounce on an item they are aware of and will thwart it (like Coburn had done a couple years ago with Pigford II appropriations).

The House also did a big pile of unanimous consents before they adjourned after the fiscal cliff vote - a bunch of them actually for previously ignored Senate bills that had come over for House action.

Still - this 112th Congress completed bills will be unable to even reach the lowest number of bills passed and made into law since they started tracking this stat in the 1940s.

12. That means no "filibuster reform."

McConnell is just keeping his minority caucus' power to block the debt ceiling increase... his ability to hold the nation hostage.

25. Filibuster reform, if it happens

will happen the first day of the new Congress. That's when they adopt their rules of order, or whatever they call it. Then, and only then can the filibuster rule be changed.

28. I was reading the comment sections on the link

A poster was commenting that they heard/read(they didn't give source) speculation that this was McChinless payment to the Democrats for allowing him to play a large part in negotiating the fiscal cliff deal. He was given a high profile, highly publicized role and a chance to look like something other than an obstructionist asshole to the 51 percent of the nation that is still sane.

This makes sense as PUKEs mostly don't care about anything really but self aggrandizement.

Hope this is right.

18. There may be less to this

than O'Donnell makes of it. If you run down the list at the first link, it seems like there have been a spate of confirmations since September. A dozen judges were confirmed in December. I don't mean to diminish Reid's effectiveness, I've always liked the guy, but just to suggest that there's been some slight movement in the confirmation process since the beginning of the last quarter.

20. Mega-Kudos to Harry and his crew

The sobering part is that this is how stuff SHOULD proceed if the other side cared AT ALL about those they supposedly represent. As it is, the only part of "represent" those clowns feel is the "Resent" part. The majority of those they serve being a bothersome impediment to the 2% that hired them!
