The persistence of NRA Talking Points

One of the biggest reasons I see for the vitriol directed at people charged with defending the indefensible (guns) on DU is the reliance on NRA Talking Points.

These are the same easily-rebutted and child-like Talking Points that were probably first debunked in the early part of the 12th century. Additionally, some pro-gun posters seem to have a "pet" Talking Point that they are especially good at copying n' pasting.

When a piece of NRA Fantasyland (AKA Talking Point) gets shot down on one thread, you might think that's that. But then a religious miracle happens - the exact same bit of fantasy gets resurrected on another thread. This happens over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

It's not discussion. It's a tiring and maddening Whack-A-Mole game. That is why so many Liberals on DU consider the gungeon a cesspool, and why when that cesspool overflows into GD it stinks the whole place up.

1. Had one group who insisted the Ft Hood shootings were worse

because normal troops don't carry guns on base.

When you mention that the guards and MPs carry weapons they respond that the shootings took place a long way from the gates and any MPs.

It's their own little world of fantasy

2. Regardless one doesn't have to be rude or obnoxious in return

Not liking what one has to say is no reason or excuse for expressing vitriol.

This applies, of course, to all DU discussion.

3. I don't mind discussion

But repeating long-debunked NRA Talking Points is NOT discussion. It's playing Whack-A-Mole.

All I have to say to the gun-religionists is: quit spewing Talking Points that are stupid and rebutted. You might get some respectful posts back at ya - but you also might have very little to say if you leave out the Talking Points.

6. But considering your posts consist of nothing but

a line or two of insults followed by a smiley, your definition of "debunking" is funny.

You contribute nothing positive to the discussion.

7. I agree. I have seen nothing from this poster on the subject that was not rude.

These types of posts makes the site a less welcoming place and contribute nothing to the discussion.

4. Not just NRA talking points by any means

"Progressives and liberals stayed home in 2010 which is why we have a conservative House." Is an untrue talking point I read constantly on DU.

8. On the surface, that sounds reasonable.

After some closer examination, however...

What you really mean, is talking points which in any way disagree with your view.

I'd love to see a list of these so called "nra talking points" made, and discussion of them to be had, but somehow those who are always accusing others of using them, seem unable - or more likely unwilling, to come up with one.

Which leaves things as "I know one when I see one". And that, I think, is exactly how some want it.

9. Think of it as target practice

Debating them here, sharpens the aim for debates outside DU.
