3. No tax rate increase at all? That's what they wanted at first. They won't get that.

Tax rate increase at $1,000,000. That was their first cave in. They won't get that.

Tax rate at $550,000. That was their third line of defense. They won't get that.

"Entitlement" cuts in exchange for any new revenue. Not today. Chained CPI? Nope.

Status quo on capital gains, they wanted. Deal reportedly includes an increase to 20% on capital gains for incomes over $250,000.

Unemployment insurance extended. Child tax credit extended (they voted against it just last week!). Tuition credit extended (they voted against it just last week!). No agreement on spending cuts.

They're laughing? Why? They just got their clocks cleaned.

6. As more information is revealed this deal

seems more of a victory for Democrats. Obama went from 250k to 450k when Boehner was starting with 1m the Republicans came down a lot farther than what Obama went up to. I hope people can do arithmetic.

Let's be clear about that. Their starting position was a principle that they've seemingly abandoned completely.

broke down recently Boehner tossed the $1m figure out. It is a victory either way though.

31. except that he had a very, very, very weak hand in that regard

In fact, he had nothing.

We, on the other hand, started with a position that $4 trillion in tax increases were going to happen - AUTOMATICALLY.

And $1 trillion of that would be on the richest 1%
and half a trillion on the richest 5%
and $2.6 trillion on the richest 20%

So we bargained that down to less than $600 billion.

I guess a tax cut of $2 trillion for the richest 20% COULD be seen as a victory for the bottom 60% - somehow. After all, the bottom 40% gets $300 billion in tax cuts.

$300 billion for the bottom 40% and $2 trillion for the top 20%.

Yep, that is a total victory for the working class!!!

19. Was this why all the repubs on Morning Joe were so disagreeable this morning?

They were intolerable. Didn't even bother with the niceties, just cave man snarls and intemperate statements that they have refrained from making since the got their asses whupped last November.

I'm hoping you are right and they've been whupped again...I want to drive a political stake in the heart of this RW philosophy...

32. what did YOU want at first?

What I wanted.

All of the Bush tax cuts to die. I won't get that.

Dividends taxed like ordinary income. I won't get that.

I could have gotten both of those if Democrats had simply done NOTHING.

I still say that doing nothing is better than making a bad deal.

What makes a deal bad?

A bad deal is one that gives more benefits to the richest 5% than it does to the poorest 40%.

80% of the Bush tax cuts to die? I won't get that.

Of course, it is not like I am important. I, after all, am just the fool on the hill who sees money going to the top 20% while the flat earthes are applauding the tax "increases" on the rich. Yep, if Democrats had done nothing then Romney would have paid 39.6% tax rate on his dividends, but thanks to Benedict Obama's glorious victory he will be forced to pay 20%.

That's really gotta sting, eh?

Why do you NOT feel betrayed?

Is keeping 90% of the Bush tax cuts, really "change you can believe in"?

I don't think it is a victory, or even a loss. It is primarily - a betrayal.

there is always some reason for Obama to support more tax cuts for the rich.

It's certainly not a 'win' if we make a crappy deal. It's more of a win if we do go over the cliff.

33. which facts?

the fact that rich people would have had to pay 39.6% on their dividends but thanks to the deal, they will only pay a 20% rate?

Let's see, Romney made $4.9 million in dividend income.

So the deal saves him $960,000 in taxes.

He gets a $960,000 tax cut and Democrats are celebrating THAT as a victory.

Yeah, I would be laughing behind closed doors if I was him. "They think they won"

The only thing that could be sweeter than a $1 million gift is a $1 million gift and seeing your enemies played like chumps.

It looks like the president is set to get exactly what he wanted if this deal goes through. Actually, he would be getting more than many expected. If the president gets the extension of the tuition tax credit, the clean energy tax credit, an extension of unemployment benefits, and a tax hike on the top two percent, this will be a huge win for him.

36. I must be living in bizarro world

some will continue to praise tax cuts for the rich as a victory for the people

In 2009, only 0.6% of tax filers made more than $500,000. Only 3% made more than $200,000.

Ah well, he only conceded another $600 billion in tax cuts for the rich on top of the $1.6 trillion he was already offering.

Yeah, $2 trillion in tax cuts. The rich totally got their clocks cleaned. Thank God we did not go over the cliff.
