Ohio woman shot by 5 year old.

I live very near there, and this is a twist on the story from a couple weeks ago, also near here, where a father accidentally shot his son in the back seat. It's an example of irresponsible gun ownership and the result of all too careless storage. As a disclaimer, I'm not completely anti-gun, but I am anti-idiot (you're opinion may vary).

The woman (or man) who owns the car needs some jail time, and this child should be in a better home. I hope they both get what they deserve.

A 20-year-old Warren woman was accidentally shot in the torso by her 5-year-old nephew on Thursday night.

Police said the shooting happened at about 9 p.m. at a home on Northwest Boulevard. Police searched a car in the driveway for a weapon and other clues following the shooting.

Officials said a 5-year-old boy shot Ashlee Austin, 20, his aunt, in the stomach while they were in a vehicle in the driveway of the home.

Warren Police Lt. Jeff Cole said the boy possibly found the gun in the car and shot the woman through the seat. Cole said Austin is recovering at St. Joseph Health Center and is OK.

Reports listed a 6-month-old girl as an "other" person involved in the case. Cole said he was unsure if Dorsey, who is listed as a witness to the shooting, or the girl were in the car at the time of the shooting.

A search of concealed carry permits in Trumbull County showed neither Austin, nor Shawna Dorsey, 19, of Northwest Boulevard N.W., were permitted to have a gun.

During the 911 call, a woman told dispatchers the 5-year-old shot his aunt while they were in the car. Dispatchers asked where the gun and child were. The woman said the kids and the gun remained in the car.

A woman talking to dispatchers ordered someone to “get the kids out of the car” later in the conversation with dispatchers.

Once the children were taken out of the car, the dispatcher advised a woman to leave the gun inside the car as long as no one was inside.

A woman told dispatchers that Austin never lost conciousness after being shot.

this tragedy wouldn't have happened. A nuclear bomb would have helped too. And a tank.

...then she might have been able to shoot the five-year-old attacker and protect her auntie.

We have to close the loopholes to prevent tragedies like this!

I'm from there and I wouldn't want to drive through at night, there let alone live there.

I doubt there was much at all legal about this incident, and while the owner may legitimately have felt a need to have a gun in the car for protection, I'm pretty sure from the article there will be other charges filed in relation to the weapon.

Perhaps it's a case where the intent and ownership was above board, but leaving any gun apparently under the seat with children in the car, is absolutely inexcusable. On the other hand, the owner may possibly be one of the people others think they need protection from.

It may come out in future news reports, but the local media usually ignore this part of town unless something like this happens, and follow ups are rare.

On edit, I agree that guns should only be sold at brick & mortar gun shops with background checks, waiting periods, and a legitimate paper trail, if only to stop stolen weapons sales and maintain owner responsibility. I own a couple guns, but never bought one from anyone but a licensed dealer. I guess I'm old fashioned.

I'd play along.

I wouldn't be surprised if the info you suggested came out in future reports, though.
