Most Republicans Oppose Sandy Relief

by BooMan
Sat Dec 29th, 2012 at 10:53:02 AM EST

It's interesting to see which Republican senators voted for disaster relief for the victims of Sandy. It's not hard to understand why David Vitter of Louisiana, Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker of Mississippi, and Richard Shelby of Alabama supported the relief. Their states have been ravaged by hurricanes and/or tornadoes in recent years. Richard Lugar, Olympia Snowe, and Kay Bailey Hutchison are retiring so they don't have to explain themselves to the Tea Party. Scott Brown wants to run for John Kerry's Senate seat. Susan Collins and Dean Heller just might be decent enough people to have to done the right thing without self-interest playing much of a part in it.

Still, most Republicans voted against any disaster relief for the Mid-Atlantic. That is because they are assholes.

24. Here in TN, we receive incredible Federal spending (think Oak Ridge) and aid for things

like major flooding. We also benefit from TVA flood control, less expensive electricity, and recreational lakes. We also benefit from ArmyCorps of Engineers locks, dams, and maintaining navigable waterways to provide cheap shipment of goods.

So, I guess it's a case of "I've got mine!" again.

I'm so embarrassed about our state. We're like a subsidized third-world country led by corrupt politicians, businessmen, and religious "leaders".

But at least now we can carry guns in bars.

69. Because the Sandy aid is not for Florida?

Look at where most of the other R's live, too. Inland, landlocked states, far less likely to be affected by hurricanes or the remnants. Not that they don't get bad, devastating weather or other geophysical disasters, only that these R's are most likely thinking: "It's not my state, so fuck'em!"

Whereas your better human beings that still have compassion and empathy for their fellow human beings don't look at where the aid is going, only that aid is going to those in need. An attitude I hate to say isn't universal for all Liberals.

71. One senator from MS and

Sessions from AL also voted against it. Their states are hit by hurricanes pretty regularly...and both were impacted by the BP oil spill. The R from MO voted against it as well. How many tornadoes have blown through that state over the past few years?

I think this is the clearest demonstration we've ever seen that these senators are unfit for service. They are not serving their constituents at all.

Every state lives under some threat. I believe the states with the fewest number of incidences are Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico.

But again, it's that "I got mine, fuck-u" attitude, so typical of anyone without compassion and/or empathy. While Hutchison voted for it, Cornyn voted against. And Texas was ravaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008.

Unless they are personally affected, they simply do not care about anyone else, especially if it means giving money and aid to them. If they could sell the aid, they might offer it then.

It's not like Hurricanes are one-off things. They are simply determined to undermine this administration in any way they can and the devil take the hind most. Sadly, they come from stupidly safe states. Perhaps the answer is to return the favor in kind, while letting the good people of their states know exactly why. Democrats just don't play dirty enough.

77. I don't agree with returning the favor in kind.

Partly because it wouldn't work, and because innocents would have to suffer because of brain-dead R's. These "people" are the epitome of immature "adults". If they can't have everything their way, then no one can. Attempting to punish them will only cause them to dig in even more.

I'm not a psychologist, so I don't know what the treatment for that is. Maybe someone knows child-psychology and can suggest something, because that seems the most appropriate in dealing with these adult-sized children.

but there are still plenty that would be, including those not old enough to vote, on either side

The point is to be kind to all, whether the ignoramuses appreciate it or not. Punishing everyone just to "get back at" the few in power and the few that support them is not my idea of being a Liberal. I try to be kind and compassionate to everyone, unconditionally (i.e., no strings attached.)

90. When Dems become enablers

IMHO, the 'innocents' suffer more, over a longer period of time because they, the Dems, allow Republicans to get away with just about every absurdity they decide to put forward. I've been watching the Dems provide cover for republicans for decades. If people never experience the adverse effects of their votes, they will continue to vote for the same representatives and senators who have made our government so dysfunctional. They will continue to believe that the nonsense coming from the right is good.

The Hopi Indians would allow a child to crawl toward the campfire and not pull him back...once in a while a child got too close and burned his little hand...not seriously enough to cause permanent damage, (there were people always close enough to prevent real harm) but enough that he never crawled to the fire again.

I don't want to "get back at" anyone....I want to teach people a lesson. If the sequester goes into effect 1.6 million kids will lose education benefits...600,000 of those kids are white. How many of those kids have parents who vote republican no matter what? I'd be willing to bet the number would mirror the percentage of white voters who supported Obama in 2012...That would represent 3,660,000 white children whose parents just voted against them.

Dear lord....I am listening to the head of the Tea Party Express saying..."The Republican Party has a messaging problem. The Republican Party never goes on offense, they are always on the defense" Further proof that these people need a lesson in reality.

98. The problem with "teaching them a lesson"

is that it's not as simple as that. If I were to take your Hopi Indian analogy and apply it to what would really happen were we to withhold federal aid to those hit by natural disasters, then it would be as if the child not only burned his hand, but managed to fling burning embers around the campfire, burning everyone, too. I just don't think you can teach these people lessons. They're too ignorant and selfish for that.

Any lessons taught that would stick will have to be taught on an individual basis, at the lowest levels, like in schools.

Really, though, the point is moot. Aid will get to those hit by Sandy, one way or another. These republicans are beyond lesson-teaching, and maybe even beyond shaming. The best thing we could do is to vote them out of office (nullifying their gerrymandering of the districts would be a big help in that regard.) That's the only lesson they seem to get.

101. I understand...

I can sympathize with his attitude, I just don't know whether I could go through with it.

I do think people should understand that their votes have consequences. So perhaps the thing to do is to put up billboards in every state.
The billboards should be simple. List the natural disasters that effect that state, total the federal disaster received by that state over the past 20 years and how their senators voted.

102. Fair enough

And the billboard concept is a good idea. That and maybe online ads. Something that would be seen by as many as possible. Online ads can be detailed and animated, whereas a billboard has to be designed in a way that can be read quickly. Lots of facts and numbers aren't as easy to get at a glance. You can still do that, just keep it simple, like nor more than a couple of lines of text.

Shaming is a great way to teach a lesson. Voters will get it, but it doesn't seem to work on those in office.

103. Billboards could be very simple....

Example:

9 Hurricanes made landfall in FL between 1992 and 2005.

Total damages...$_________________ (I'm too lazy to calculate it here)

Senator Marco Rubio voted against the Relief Bill for Hurricane Sandy

Nice big letters, would fit very well, be easy to read and if they still can't get the point, perhaps it's time to make IQ tests part of voter registration.

104. To be totally honest,

I would have a hard time reading all of that at 60+mph while also paying attention to the road and the inattentive drivers. And my IQ isn't low, only my reading speed

You can turn some of that into graphics, pretty pictures, as the mind grasps those faster than words. You could also condense what you wrote above to something like:

"During Sen. Rubio's tenure, 9 Hurricanes ravaged Florida. Billion$ in damages. Yet, he voted against aid for damages from Hurricane Sandy."

Even that could be condensed and still get the point across.

105. Okay...

But Rubio wasn't elected until 2010 and we've been incredibly lucky here since 2005. Tropical storms, but no hurricanes.

9 Hurricanes hit FL 1992 to 2005

Damages:$_____billion

Sen. Marco Rubio voted NO on Sandy Relief Bill

Better? Remember with giant letters you'll see it from at least 100 yards away...

I'm getting into this billboard

I only know my idiot senators (Cornyn and Hutchison) have been around way too long, now with a teabagger replacing Hutchison.

That's much better on your billboard design! Now get some funding to make it happen

It was one from AL that didn't and Rubio from FL. Both Senators from LA voted yes, as well. Our areas got hit too hard by Katrina for either state to soon forget the devastation.

I can't believe Rubio had the nerve...2004, four major hurricanes hit this state within 2 months. One did over $13 billion in damage in Palm Beach County alone. Amazingly ignorant.

18. Now watch them claim there was some provision in the bill they didn't like....

....you know,....their usual "fraud and abuse" line to deny people from getting help.

It's like when they pushed to make sure EVERY application for aid includes the "perjury" threat.

Hell,...there are some laws they put in place where it's even illegal to APPLY for aid. They consider that "an attempt to defraud".

You can't.
It is filled with pork.
Meanwhile, storm survivors/victims are SUFFERING.
Thanks to people who wasted money in this bill and ALL those who supported and voted for it.

and what did I find? You have some really interesting sources there, pal. Fox News, Breitbart, Freedomworks etc. When I go to a real source of information I find that of the $60.4 billion in the bill $47.4 will go directly to storm relief and repair and $13 billion will be to improve infrastructure to better handle the next one.

I know families whose houses went up in flames from the flood causing gas leaks. We live in the center of the island and the wind was down right scary. Because of this storm, we need a new roof. Thank God they call it a super storm and not a hurricane, or we'd have to fork 13k over. Now our insurance is paying for it. Those Rs should be ashamed. What makes them such horrible people?

Including tens of millions for fucking MILITARY bases unrelated to storm?
Read about the tens - hundreds of millions - in the bill, not related or directly related to storm victims.
Educate yourself, you'll acquire an entirely different anger about this bill.

61. Portman made it - but he was busy

"Anonymous" came to our town today, raised a ruckus over the local govt and their lack of prosecution of the football team doping up a young girl and taking her around town to be raped. The charming little boys posted pics of her, naked and all, being dragged all over the place. 2 kids, out of dozens in the videos, arrested, and even their charges were amended.

I'll just bet Portman was getting all busy going down to the protest to take on these local scum bags that call themselves the Jefferson County Justice System.

*** Anonymous posted a pic of the sheriff, Fred Abdulla, and said they are gonna get him, next. He had called them a "bunch of jerks." This whole hillbilly town cracks me the hell up. I've never met such a bunch of fuckheads. Abdulla is as dirty as they come. Everybody seems to have a story on him, but nobody will run against him. The feds already had one case against him, but lost. Watch Anonymous annihilate the greedy bastard.

It's finally getting interesting in Hillbilly Hills. Thanks, Anonymous. & keep your eye on Portman - he comes from questionable stock.

70. Senator Rubio - Fl

Our great governor - with 37% approval (that 37% that won't budge no matter how bad someone screws up as long as he is a Repug) - Rick Scott has done everything to wreck havoc on Obama's help to the state.

Stimulus funds for high speed rail in the tri-county area (dade, broward and palm beach) - desperately needed now that people have been forced to take jobs far from their homes, horrible traffic and no public transit - also high speed from Orlando to the tri-county area (would boost tourism b/c if people are visiting Orlando - a couple hours later than can be at the beaches and they might stay an extra day or two-or the other way around). And it would have brought jobs -but despite tourist industry trying to stop him - he said no - tea partier said too much spending. EARTH TO RICK SCOTT - IT DOESN'T COST FLA ANYTHING TO TAKE THE OBAMA STIMULUS MONEY AND IF FLA DOESN'T TAKE IT - IT WILL BE SPENT ELSEWHERE - YOU ARE NOT SAVING MONEY. Jerry Brown took Fla's high-speed rail money for California and is building high speed rail.

He is refusing to do Obamacare - not just the exchange - refusing to do it - at least for now. EARTH TO RICK SCOTT - the US Supreme Court just said it was the law of the land.

So what does rick Scott do when the strikers threatened to close Florida ports - hurting his business buddies? Waaaaaaaaaaa Waaaaaa - Pres. Obama can you please use your influence to stop this economic nightmare for Floridians.

So - if a hurricane comes to Fla - Rubio will be the first one with his hand out - b/c they are not just assholes, but hypocritical ones as well

Signed,

disgusted in Fla

Rubio and Sessions voting against it makes absolutely no sense, since both of their states are going to get hammered again at some point. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face...
