Constantly re-arranging the aisles and products. It's infuriating! In my case it is Wegman's but I believe most do it, on purpose to confuse customers and force them to wander around looking for whatever they want, and hopefully seeing more products to buy.
I know there is a "science" around influencing shoppers. For example, it has been shown that the more slowly shoppers go through the store, the more they buy. That's why they have those annoying free-standing product displays that make people stop and wait for others to pass. The store brand is always placed at eye level. I could go on and on.
I'm sick of being manipulated! WEB SITE COMING SOON!

(2,739 posts)The placement of different food items seemed almost arbitrary. I like the food, but the inconvenience was enough to make me not want to go back there again.

(35,392 posts)as they stare, closely, at the other side of the aisle ... with their hand still on the cart.
Which forces you to say something to them. Usually, they're fine, and move (embarrassed) away, but sometimes they are annoying about it ...

(20,234 posts)after watching a guy knock over a very full one a few weeks ago. He was trying to maneuver through an aisle partially blocked by one and sent it flying.
Everyone in the aisle stopped and helped to pick up all the boxes of rice - but we set them up our OWN way (sort of a free-form igloo), then stood back to admire our work, and assured him it looked much better than before. It was a great community-building moment.

(24,560 posts)Those stockers are very very rude. They throw these huge boxes in the aisle and I can't get through. The boxes also block the merchandise.

(14,177 posts)Grocery shopping is a nightmare for me. It's not that I am tempted by all the NOT FOOD stuff, you know all the crap that isn't good for you. But, there is so much to go through to find real food, I am very new at this and it's just amazing to me how much stuff in the grocery store is there just to make us unhealthy.

(1,957 posts)I have seen seniors so confused when the bread, coffee and jelly sections were scrambled around. Think of what it costs these stores to constantly pay to have "movers" instead of stockers. While the dept is down and the new one is nowhere in sight where are all those food items you need?
We shop with a list(a handy item they don't want us to have) and we write down according to the area where something is located. When they make another one of their grand moves our lists are defunct.
When I was able to walk through stores I had to limit the time I stood and shopped. I thought it unfair for them to constantly confuse me and my list. More then once I walked out missing several items because I refused to walk around on a treasure hunt.
Long gone are the days when managers actually show up on the main floor. They must be playing games in their office. All you see around here is a picture of their manager. Isn't that special? How can you complain to that? Complain to corporate is even worse. You get one of those fake letters back with some silly comments that have zip to do with your complaint.
Next I think they go to too many food seminars that have some fool yapping about how you can sell more peas if they are in, say the middle of the store so next thing you know the peas are in troop movement. Put the higher priced items in the first aisles they say and sure enough exotic fruits have pushed out the apples and pears to a more lowly position.
It's all about profit and nothing about customer convenience or service. To them service is spelled $ervice.

(487 posts)Want me to take my time & relax, give me a free coffee coming in the store.
Walmart has a flyer map that shows you where to go for your needs. Of course my Walmart is the biggest they have built west of the Mississippi and you could run out of body fluids navigating the maze, fail to find the restroom in time, or be lost for days in there since they never close. A guy might take a big ball a string in so you can find your way out.
What pisses me is people who will take stuff off the shelves, then decide later they don't want it, and just set it on another shelf somewhere in the store. I have suggested that they gather this stuff up and instead of spending labor to restock it, just give it away to some customer who gets the right register number of the day. This way they can write it off as advertising and increase traffic to the store.

(10,946 posts)redesign the layout. I want to be able to enter the store and go directly to the items I am looking for. I have no interest in wandering up and down every isle.

(6,890 posts)But I would point out that most of our shopping should essentially be done a few sections, the produce, fresh bakery, and dairy-egg aisle. Most of the stuff in the middle is nothing but processed sugar and salt and unfit for human consumption. Let them rearrange the crap and stick to the sections that we belong.

(110,913 posts)and I've been barking at them about it. Another stupid thing they've done is "mainstreaming" things like gluten free products away from the organic produce and bulk bins and dietary foods ghetto that was so convenient for those of us with dietary issues. No, you are not going to increase sales of gluten containing products by putting the gluten free stuff with them. Yes, you are going to generate ill will among your customers.
It's getting to the point I really dread food shopping. It's like one of those really annoying hidden object games, trying to find what cockamamie place they've refiled something you need.

Ever wonder why Lays , Coke, Pepsi seem to always have the "ends"? and why the snack/soda pop aisles are now complete, front-to back/top-to-bottom, when they used to be a few shelves?
