The Official "Oooooooh, the F-F-Fiscal C-C-C-Cliff!!!!!!" Panic Thread

Where you, the forum member, can express how completely petrified, terrified, aghast, horrified, shivering, mortified, and under-the-bed-panic stricken you are of the possibility that the elites, the Republicans, and their select Corporate New Democrat hirelings just might have to pay more in repatriated overseas taxes, receive a little less in realized capital gains from their defense sector stock holdings, and miss out on the manufactured opportunity to slash Social Security and/or Medicare benefits for 85% of the nation if we (actually they) go "over the cliff".

1. When rich people go over the cliff, can we have their stuff?

2. I'm not worried...PERSONALLY.

As a 1%er, I'm happy to have my taxes increased. But I'm concerned that too many people have a casual opinion of what the effects could be for the working and middle class. Higher taxes for everyone, reduced social spending, and a decline in people's market-based retirement accounts aren't thinks to joke about.

7. "reduced social spending"

Ok, we'll check back with you, Mr. DLC/Third Way coordinator after the kabuki theater is concluded, just to see how much in Social Security and/or Medicare cuts were forced through regardless.

4. So, the sequester that Eric Cantor and Boehner endorsed is a fabulous thing that progressives

should support?

I love the ODS logic on display here.

Of course, when the bad consequences from the cliff/slope show up, the same people will blame Obama for agreeing to this in negotiations last year.

5. Well, we're as middle class as it gets and it will cost us at least $3K in higher taxes...

...which will just mean that the basement remodel will have to wait until another year (though that also means that money isn't going into the Michigan economy).

On the other hand, I have family members dear to me who are dependent on Social Security. I'd much rather pay higher taxes myself then have their benefits cut in some deal.

Basically, I'd rather we go over the cliff, wait until for the new House, and then pass an independent tax cut for the middle class (making no more than $250K/yr).
