Here's an ad for a product we tell you just might kill you!

But it's so awesome you just want it anyway!

Jesus, do drug companies have no soul? Or just too much money? Why in the hell would I want to buy a product that might give me anal bleeding or certain death while giving me an erection?

2. Listening to their disclaimers

They may as well be. Or at least suicide kits.

"I'm gonna get laid tonight even if it kills me."

4. Most men are willing to take that chance for another erection

The really sad ones are the ones who are too bashful to tell the docs and nurses they took the stuff when they come into the ER with chest pain from overexertion. Our first line drugs bottom out their blood pressure and then we have to pick them up off the floor and start life support measures.

I know I find the list of side effects to be a real disincentive even to drugs I could conceivably benefit from, the newer drugs for autoimmune diseases. However, listening to the list makes me think hobbling around as I am is more tolerable.

5. One of my favorites is the one for the "make you pee less" pill.

The fine print says it may help you pee one less time per day! Seriously? All those risks and side effects for that fucking little benefit??

And then there's the testosterone roll-on stick which should never be used by pregnant women. You don't say?

8. I forget the name of the medication now, but let me look around.

I'll edit this with a link if I can find you something.

Detrol, Vesicare and Enablex are three I found which were heavily advertised. Just search YouTube for them and you'll see a ton of frightening ads.

The one I'm thinking of is an ad with this guy wandering around town with a HUGE flask of icky green liquid. I can't find that ad, and I don't remember the name of that medication, but like with all the others, it had a long list of side effects and disclaimers about possible ineffectiveness.

13. Or sleep meds that will help you sleep 23 minutes faster. Like that'll really make

enough difference considering the dangers.

18. I think the testosterone one is Axiron.

They always show the stylized drawing of a guy who looks like he's got a rainbow coming out of his armpit. Very strange. http://www.axiron.com/Pages/help-increase-testosterone.aspx

25. there are a lot of those drug ads like that -- the condition they supposedly correct sounds less

lethal than the side effects.

10. For some it may be worth that risk.

A medication meant to treat an auto-immune disease is really not comparable to the boner pills the OP is talking about. No one does biologic injections recreationally.

12. Are you implying only recreationally used drugs are dangerous and

have potentially deadly side effects. I haven't heard a drug ad lately that doesn't warn that it might make the very issue the drug is intended to treat worse, including the psoriasis one IIRC. Anti-depressants might make you suicidal (that's pretty damned depressed), heart medications that might cause heart attacks, gout meds might make gout worse, and so on. It's become basically farsical to take meds these days, imo.

21. You are wrong.

As people who ridicule medical science and the people who you think so stupid as to risk their health to improve it tend to be. Your "imo" is useless to the people suffering from diseases and seeking relief, and your judgmental attitude is worse than useless.

24. No I'm not. Surely as you say, some get relief, but those

who die or have worse symptoms or side effects while taking or withdrawing from those same drugs wouldn't think themselves at all lucky. Additionally, many of the drugs have no better or only slightly better results than placebos, so it's still questionable whether many of the currently popular drugs are truly doing any good.

26. prescription drugs kill more people in the US every year than diabetes, cerebrovascular disease,

or heroin & cocaine combined. Prescription drugs kill more people than car accidents. And they kill more people than guns.

* 225,000 deaths annually from medical errors including 106,000 deaths due to "nonerror adverse events of medications" (Starfield, jama 7/26/2000)

* 180,000 deaths annually from medication errors and adverse reactions (Holland)

9. Just saw an ad earlier today for some new sleep drug that might kill you

or cause you to kill yourself, in addition to dozens of other bad things, but ask your doctor to get it for you.

16. I really want to know why it's now "ask your doctor about..." instead of...

...the damn doctor using his or her training to decide what's best for the patient.

As a society, we really kind of deserve whatever comes our way for letting it come to this.

11. Or the asthma one that will make asthma worse, or ditto the gout one,

and have you also noticed that so many now also warn about withdrawal without doctor supervision, so being on it is potentially bad, but then getting off it might be even worse.

I often wonder with the mass shootings how many were taking anti-depressants or anti-psychotics or withdrawing from either of them as those are some damn scary side effects.

You never know... Some men might just like the promise of anal bleeding and the possibility of death, coupled with an erection.
