5 Feminist Demands She Wants You to Ignore

Living in the 21st century means you will encounter more than a few "independent ladies" while you’re out on the prowl.

We're not talking about the stereotypical feminists here. The modern feminist can simply be a working woman who pays her own bills and doesn’t need a man in her life to be happy.

Enter you, the lucky guy who is thrilled at the prospect of a non-clingy girlfriend. Not so fast. While the notion of the sexy feminist isn’t completely false, you need to be aware of those pesky feminist demands that even the most independent of women is expecting you to ignore. Why don't women just tell you what they want, you ask? Silly rabbit, then they wouldn't be women!

Here's what you need to know.

THere are many right wing women pundits who do just that. They know how misogynistic right wing men feel about feminist women and they tell them exactly what they want to hear and get paid big bucks for it.

I have been a feminist for more than 40 years. I am old. I have 3 granddaughters. I am worried sick about their future. I have fought, in my professional life (I am retired) to protect reproductive rights) when I worked for Planned Parenthood of CT.

You attack me. Look what you are doing...

Like CTYankee, I think I know where you're coming from, and I think we have broad agreement between us. But, there's often a generalization about "men" or "DU men" that makes some of us feel like we're being accused of something without cause. And before you can even say "if you didn't say anything wrong, then I'm not addressing you", please understand that this is the big problem with generalization. It still feels like an accusation, despite yours and others' protests to the contrary. Over and over at DU, the following pattern can be observed:
1) a thread involving feminism is started,
2) a generalization is made about "men", or about "DU men"
3) the generalization is often tightened up ("I didn't mean you", or "if you're not displaying the behaviors I'm talking about, then this doesn't apply to you", and so on).
4) people like me say to themselves, 'hey, why is that person talking about men in general? I'm a man, and I'm not like what's being described', and so on.

It's a simple matter of human nature to start to feel bad, put out, when an accusation is floated in your general direction, and you're very aware that the accusation does not correctly describe you. If the shoe were on the other foot, I'm certain that you would feel precisely the same.

Now let's size this appropriately. This is not going to ruin my day, and it's not going to make me write a big flameout of a goodbye letter to DU. But this is a repeated pattern that makes life on DU just a little less enjoyable, a little less fulfilling. I'd ask you to consider that from this other point of view, and act in accordance with your conscience. Thank you.

One final point: you're not the only person who has asked the OP why he posted this article. It's a perfectly valid article to post, not because it contains words to live by, but because it's always, always useful to check the temperature of the GOP and of the GOP voting public. It's not pretty, and as others have said in other threads, GOP voters are on the very cusp of being openly racist. I contend it's also very useful to know what these dolts are doing/thinking when it comes to women's issues. Conversely, although no one came right out and said this thread should be locked, the inference was there. That's too much of a chill for my comfort--let's keep the thread, and see where the conversation goes.

Thanks.

If you don't take advantage of her, she won't think you're a real man, and will put you in the friend zone! (Cause ladies are always finding men attractive and being interested in them, and then later deciding that they're just not manly enough to sleep with.)

that women are helpless, rather stupid, easily dominated creatures that don't really know what they want and can't think for themselves, so someone else has to think for them. This is where that idea leads, and people believe it.

This is why some of your ideals scare the hell out of me, no matter how well intentioned they are. Someone judged not capable of saying yes will eventually be unable to say no.

OK, I can admit, I don't see anything wrong with offering to help someone with packages or bags, either male or female, mind you, but if someone seems like they're expending more effort than necessary, I always offer to help, and I'm as anti-social as they come. Just something programmed into me from my upbringing. But it certainly isn't a "help poor weak women" thing, it can be men, women, young or old. If they seem like they need help, I offer, so it doesn't really apply to this particular article, just something that caught my eye.
