Household electricity bills are rising-industry facing higher costs from older plants

Household electricity bills are rising

Household electricity bills have risen sharply over the past five years after years of stable prices, but Texans are still paying slightly below the national average for electricity, according to a USA Today story.

Homeowners paid on average a record $1,419 for electricity bills in 2010, and electricity bills rose about $300 per year over previous year’s averages, according to the USA Today analysis of government data.

As a result, owners are paying $1.50 of every $100 in after-tax income to power their homes, according to the analysis. It comes as Americans are using more electricity than in years prior despite more efficient appliances.

“The industry as a whole is facing higher costs because we’re retiring our aging fleet” of power plants, Duke Energy spokeswoman Betsy Conway told USA Today.

Homes producing their own energy will take the power away from utility companies, quite literally.
