My Uncle tried to convince me Obama is a Muslimn today.
We were at the table eating, maybe playing Yahtzee, I can't remember exactly what we were doing. My Uncle is, by all accounts, a nice guy, and he does know my political leanings(everyone does, proud Democrat here). He asked me if I thought Obama was a Muslim, I said no, and then he tried to convince me that it was in his book "Dreams of/from my father", that he had written and said he was a Muslim, and that he had said the sound of Muslim's calling to prayer was the most beautiful thing he had ever heard. Flatly, I told him I sincerely doubted that.
I then ended it with, " What kind of a Muslim is he? He bombs the hell out of the middle east, supports women's rights, abortion rights, same-sex marriage.... Hell, he's a terrible Muslim if he is one! " Some people, I swear... They'll believe anything.

I blame the media. In Portland & Seattle the lone liberal radio station is going to sports. But there are plenty of powerful rightwing stations spewing that crap still on in those librul bastions of commiehood.

|
Them corporate slimeballs don't want "progressive" radio in the least. Kill it they say!!!!
There is no way the fascists that own radio stations will tolerate voices that are anti-fascism. All the while the wealthy of the world have 21 to 31 trillion stashed in the tax havens while they tell us we are broke. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=21+trillion+offshore That's right. No money for kids meals in school, but 31 trillion in the Cayman Islands. What are you going to do about it? |

8. Sounds like he's repeating shit he hears on the radio/tv. A friend of mine used to...
|
...listen to Hannity and I'm sure some other of the right wing talkers and on the infrequent occasions where our conversations drifted into politics, he was always bringing up these obscure little weird points and trying to blow them up way out of proportion. It didn't really hit me until I thought about some of the stuff he said that he wasn't actually reading or researching the topics at all: He was merely parroting what he thought he heard from Hannity, et al.
And, BTW, because he was parroting off that stuff, it was the same bizarre hammer he used to drive home the nail in any discussion we were having. PB |

He never breaks out the prayer rug in the middle of press conferences, he drinks his own home made beer (on TV!), and then there's those pesky Muslim killing drones. If he lived in a Muslim country, they'd probably shun him, rip out his tongue, then behead him for murder.
How did the Fox Newsies forget all about 25 years of listening to sermons from Reverend Wright already? They heard about it from Hannity for a solid year. |

Last edited Wed Dec 26, 2012, 06:54 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) Bet him, then have him show you where it is in his book that Obama says he is a Muslim.
Get a copy of the book from the library first, and hand it to him so he has time to look for it. And if he won't even try, then no, I'm he isn't a nice guy because he knowingly lies about such things with ease. ETA: And this exercise in betting will only show him that he is repeating lies; it likely won't stop him from continuing to do so. Does he belong to one of those religions that thinks they are the "one true religion"? Because I can't see why anyone would care even if Obama were a Muslim. That said, it is an insult to Obama to claim things that are provably false. And since he didn't say he was a Muslim in his book, Dreams, then your Uncle is an insulting liar and yeah, if he were my Uncle, I'd be putting that lie to the curb with a copy of the book in my hand. |

I think it really does help. People convince themselves everyone is on the same kooky wavelength they picked up at (fill in rightwing source) and they do wonder, if only for a second, when an intelligent, rational person just blinks and says, "No, that is not true." The way you put it was helpful, too. We often don't think in terms of "evidence" that something crazy isn't true, but your comments do demonstrate the impossibility of this particular wingnut fantasy. Thanks for putting some rationality out there. We have to keep doing that. |
