I'm Sorry...I Realize It's Christmas Eve... And You Might Want To Bookmark This For Later... But...
We need to stop the slaughter.
THAT... is my Christmas wish... and probably Christ's as well.

1. Maybe you can explain to me...
|
After studying creation through filter of physics I find it unimaginable that God cares one wit whether or not we fall on our faces for him.
Taking care of one another seems much closer to his desires for us. So why is the religious right (Christian, Muslim, jew or whatever) obsessed with the idea that its all about giving him credit for every good thing? Does he really care that much about football? I'd think he'd just want everybody to be good sports and not hurt each other. Maybe I'm just an ignorant rebellious agnostic who doesn't get it? |

9. Still hoping for an answer from a believer
|
This question has been bugging me all day.
The vast majority of left-leaning Christians are all about peace and being your brothers' keeper. Y'all will do that with or without reward and punishment. That would seem to me to be the desired outcome. I'm just hoping you have some insight into the other side which seems to be all about keeping the big scary wizard happy no matter what is involved. I find that view absurd. I just don't get that bunch. They seem to think God likes bloodshed. I work with a couple of these guys and, while they are outwardly nice guys, the things they claim scare the bejesus out of me. |

19. I am not a theologian, but I think the answer to your question is
|
that some people are having difficulty coping with the speed with which society is changing. My father remembers going to market in a horse drawn wagon. He remembers seeing the first helicopter test flight. I remember the first ATM and was at Ohio State when it became the first major university to replace its card catalog (actual cards) with a computerized system. I remember getting our first television. My grandchildren don't remember ever not having tablet computers or cell phones.
Life has gotten too complex for some people. So, they look for simple rules to follow to lead a 'good life'. And the Old Testament is a whole lot easier than the New. Thou shalt and Thou shalt not. An eye for an eye. And so on. And it is much easier to get permission to hate them as an outlet for your anger over not being able to keep up with a rapidly changing society than trying to love everyone. It is much easier to believe that if you follow the rules then you will get your reward in the next life - whether that is wings and a harp, or some number of virgins. That is where the fundies are coming from. At least that is my take on it. |

That video is what we do to large segments of the world. All that carnage is our doing. WE did it. We cannot ignore the death and destruction WE are visiting on innocent people, who have done nothing wrong, except to be born in the wrong part of the world. Alerting on it in DU? Whoever did that should be ashamed. How dare anyone try to hide our atrocities from ourselves, when the whole rest of the world knows who the world's worst terrorists are. US, WE, the United States That's who! |

5. Here's What I Know... I'm An Atheist Who Has Actually Read Most Of The Text In The Bible...
|
because it has historical/societal relevance.
We non-believers have a responsibility to know what they think they believe, in order to point out that many many may THINK they are Christian... but have NO IDEA what Christ actually advocated for. Son of God, Prophet, Original Liberal, Original Hippie, Cool Dude... I do not care. The fact that us non-believers are the minority on this planet, suggests that you know what the majority thinks. IOW... Can YOU imagine Jesus advocating the arming of every school in America to protect the kids ??? Old Testament: An eye for an eye. New Testament: Turn the other cheek. |

33. I think in part it's because people tend to create God in their own image
|
If you're a rigid authoritarian, chances are so is your God. If you're a tolerant, loving person, chances are so is your God.
That's a bit simplistic and I do think religious belief can be much more nuanced and complex than that, but to a large extent it's true. |

35. And so this is christmas
|
Every Christmas my mother would put this on the turntable and turn the volume up to Very Loud. She wanted the neighbours to hear it too. She's been gone many years now, almost as many as the song's creator. If I think of it I play it in her memory at Christmas. I'd forgotten till now, so thanks for the reminder, WillyT.
She used to walk beside me in the peace marches of yore. |
