Why do people look to Progressives when

a solution to gun violence is needed? Why not stand, point the other direction and say, "ask them, it's their baby." As more and more people die we need to make this a republican problem, show the work Democrats have done to fix the problem and then highlight the roadblocks. Make it political because it is political. I haven't seen what type of weapon was used in today's cold-blooded killing of those firemen but I have an idea. Make that a republican problem, make it political. After all, isn't the solution going to be political? How many unopened Christmas packages do we need this year?

1. Okay... "ask them, it's their baby."

And they say there's no problem.

Now what?

2. Here's the thing: we've cut violent crime in half in 20 years, and nobody knows why

During that time, we've tried various stuff on both sides of the political spectrum addressing a lot of antecedents to crime.

Even more weird is the fact that nobody is rushing to take credit for that to vindicate their theory. In fact, if you listened to political talk nowadays you would assume we had a rising crime rate, rather than a 40-year low. *shrug* Lobbyists need a crisis to keep the checks coming.

4. If DU members wanted balance they'd bring in examples of sucessful acts of gun defence.

O yea ...and there are plenty of those. I've read the interviews with felons about robbery and they all for the most part say their number one fear is a home owner with a gun.

6. You'll see some of those in the gungeon

It's difficult to quantify a counterfactual like that; I imagine the number of successful acts of self defence with firearms is less than the NRA says and more than Brady says.

5. Just a little off topic (not really) and I have my tin foil hat on, but I think Republicans are

especially happy about the school massacre and the latest firefighters that were murdered. Their wet dream is to privitize schools and social services like firefighters & police. They keep saying to make schools like fenced camps with armed guards knowing full well that most parents will home school their kids before putting them in camps. Their politics of fear is working very well for them now. If enough parents do home school their kids then the Republicans in Wash DC will say there's not enough children going to school and the government can't afford it so we're privitizing the schools. I have no answers, but we can see where this is leading to.

7. It's not just the gun violence problem.......

We need to point to the republicans saying "ask them, it's their baby" for the mess they have created over the last four, no eight, actually twelve years.

Two optional wars? Ask them!
Budget problems caused by two optional wars? Ask them!
Outrageous debt caused by tax cuts for the well connected? Ask them!
Lowering of US credit rating because of obstructionism? Ask them!
The Fiscal Cliff? Ask them! It was their idea!
Higher occurrence of racism and hate crimes? Ask them and their AM radio, rabid FOX friends!
Gun violence caused by "guns are good" propaganda? Ask Them!

Ask them and hold them responsible.

8. Because we're the ones that are willing to do something about it?

Or at least the ones willing to do something about it that isn't fucking ridiculous like arming all the teachers or putting cops in every school.

9. And what evidence do you have of that?

I don't know who "progressives" are but I do know a lot of liberals and I know a few conservatives who aren't 'baggers and can be counted on to step up and work on common causes. We need a broader group of people than just those who call themselves "progressives." We need everyone we can get so my suggestion is that you lose some of the assumptions you are making and go meet some people who are not preoccupied with being pigeon-holed.

10. Precisely! People who have guns have a responsibility to make sure these things don't happen.

And they should realize that if these events happen any more frequently, there will be a terrible public backlash that will include anger by current gunowners.
