Am I wearing tin foil or does it seem as if there as a small contingent in DU that tries to quash

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by aikoaiko (a host of the General Discussion forum).

anti gun sentiments? Of the thousands of posting members there seems to be a dozen or so that always jump in to try and discredit any post that suggests the gun situation in America is out of control. They seemed to take a break for a bit after the Newtown tragedy but are now coming back in force as if they had been given marching orders by some magical force.

When the discussion is about the gun used they will invariably call us stupid and blast us with gun semantics as to what is and is not fully auto and how hard a conversion kit is to install. And when it is about a "well regulated militia" they go into the twilight zone for arguments.

Flame on. It's worth it to me as I want no more children killed in school.

3. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if NRA had paid hirelings

on this and other liberal forums/websites working full time to attack people who want even reasonable gun restrictions on the books.

Koch brothers, NRA, AFA, lots of groups with PLENTY of money to do this.

But a lot of them are just garden variety gun nutters who consider themselves liberal merely because they don't want to stone gays or execute abortion providers.

ETA: DU does have plenty of non-nutter gun owners who see the need for reasonable restrictions. I'm not referring to them.

5. The endless parsing over what is or is not an "assault" weapon

would be amusing if it weren't such a fucking tragic situation.

The teachers and children at that school were ASSAULTED. Weapons were used that made the ASSAULT very effective. Ergo, those are "assault weapons".

Now if we want to get into a detailed discussion of what words should go into legislation in order to effectively limit access to those weapons, that's another matter. But that's not the context where this has been coming up on DU.

6. If you want effective legislative action, you need facts.

If you're for a new assault weapons ban, and don't know and/or don't care what an assault weapon is, then how are those emotions NOT going to be exploited by do-nothing politicians?

The Newtown shooter did not use an assault weapon. Most people on this board seem to think that he did, and thus a new AWB will solve the problem. Do-nothing politicians are aiding and abetting that viewpoint.

Does this fact make you uncomfortable? Would you prefer to be ignorant of the facts?

8. Fact: It's much easier to kill a bunch of people with a 30 round magazine than with a 5 round mag.

It's quite simple, actually, no matter how much you want it to seem complicated.

24. If it makes no difference, then why are you opposed to it being regulated?

Plus, it'd be very easy to test how many rounds per minute could be accurately placed on targets using one size or the other. I'd be money that that would show your opinion to be mistaken.

Thanks for helping to prove Whovian's point, though

10. I'd like to see semi auto and full auto go the way of the Dodo.

Clear enough? "Assault Weapon" is a phrase and has no place in reality as any weapon could be considered an assault weapon as they are all designed to be capable of assault.

29. Okay, let's say we want legislation that addresses access to the types of guns the CT shooter used

and anything like them or worse.

What language should the legislation use to describe those weapons clearly so that the legislation is effective?

And yes, the Newtown shooter used an "assault" weapon, even if it is not properly described as such in the previous AWB legislation.

If you want to address a concern that any language that would include those weapons would also include weapons you feel should not be limited, then state that as your concern. No one on this board is actually writing the legislation.

7. YES and I am ANTI-GUN PRO-GUN

and YOU yourself had the wrong impression of me on a different thread because

I AM THE ONE AND ALMOST ONLY PERSON WHO IS ANTI-GUN TO GO IN THEIR AREA!!!

Gun Control & RKBA http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1172

YES, i made almost 400 posts there-but all took the gun fight to their area as I am
100% anti-gun, anti-NRA

but in normal days, we can NOT argue guns here only there.

I am still awaiting an apology.

You know, the guys in that section would never do what you did to me. You do realize that don't you?

And I myself would never ban anyone or censor anyone

after all, this is a political debate board and we need to defeat the NRA viewpoint
(and note- not all are NRA members there, there is a difference, some are pro-gun and not pro-NRA.)

and again, i am on YOUR side on this issue, my page showing I am in their part of the board notwithstanding

Favorite forum: General Discussion, 1781 posts in the last 90 days (63% of total posts)
Favorite group: Gun Control & RKBA, 379 posts in the last 90 days (13% of total posts)
ALL 379 ARE AGAINST GUNS AND THE NRA. ALL OF THEM.

BTW-listen to Harry Chapin's "The night that made America Famous".
It rings true as do most of his like Paul Simon's, songs in 2012.

and many DUers own guns, so this isn't very surprising to me. Especially since many of the arguments from "both sides" are poorly constructed.

30. Well, some gun-control advocates want additional restrictions and/or

regulations, and some gun-control advocates want wide-sweeping bans. Additionally, not all pro-2A folks agree with each other either. This has caused some confusion here on DU, and other places. So I place the phrase "both sides" into quotes to demonstrate this. Perhaps just saying "various sides," but without the quotes, would be better.

20. I believe so as well.

But due to the fear of alienating a voting block long since alienated, many Democrats are very hesitant to alienate them rather than embracing the feelings of their base.

When Dean was running I asked him about gun control where he quickly passed it off to localities and got away from me as quickly as possible.
