National Don't Wanna Get Shot By A Rifle Association. Help collect 4 million signatures

Half of American homes do not have guns, yet we are at terrible risk from the lethal weapons in our neighbors' homes. Enough! Time for us to speak out.

I just sent this email to the people in my address book. Can you do the same? And post it around on different boards? If we can get 4 million signatures on this petition to Repeal the Second Amendment, we can show that we are as strong as the NRA. And we are serious.

Hello Friend,

Are Americans as civilized as Aussies? Are we able to rise up and demand effective action to stop the carnage of gun massacres? Will we?

Please read this article about the effective actions taken in Australia to dramatically reduce gun deaths.
http://news.yahoo.com/around-world-massacres-spurred-gun-control-105145195.html

Americans shouldn't have to be worried that an irresponsible gun-owning parent's recklessness will result in the slaughter of their young children at school.

Freedom doesn't mean cowering in fear of my gun loving neighbors and their teen boys.

We need real, serious gun control now. FOR REAL.

The first step is to repeal the second amendment. Make it no more of a constitutional right to own a gun than to own a car. We don't need, and can't live with, the constitutional right to own powerful, lethal weapons of mass death. No more.

It's a long process to amend the constitution, requiring passage by Congress and then ratification by 3/4th of the states, so let's start now. Let's demand our Congress be as courageous as a kindergarten teacher and stand up to the NRA . Once we remove this anachronistic, poorly written, flawed right from the constitution, we can hope to stop the regular gun massacres we now must live with as a routine occurrence.

Then, we can follow the lead of countries like UK and Australia and require guns to be stored in extremely secure lockers at gun ranges and hunting clubs and armories. Make licenses to keep guns at home be based on need, with stringent requirements and frequent reviews. Require liability insurance for gun owners, as we require it for car owners.

Repealing the 2nd amendment won't automatically make all gun ownership illegal, but it will allow us to move forward and create the rational rules we need for the 21st century.

That's why I created a petition to The United States House of Representatives, The United States Senate, and President Barack Obama, which says:

"Repeal the Second Amendment Now. This anachronistic, poorly worded amendment prevents us from passing real gun control measures that will be effective in stopping the ongoing gun slaughter. It should be no more a constitutional right to own a gun than to own a car."

Will you sign my petition? Click here to add your name:

http://signon.org/sign/repeal-the-second-amendment-6?source=c.fwd&r_by=5543184

When we get enough signatures at signon.org, they will send it out to their membership and we can get the word out to even more people.

Thank you so much.

Please forward this email widely. Let's go viral!

Note: The White House petition is no longer accepting signatures, because the White House has responded with a letter to all of the gun control petitions. Unfortunately, the letter quotes President Obama: "Look, like the majority of Americans, I believe that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms." We need 4 million signatures on the signon.org petition to let our leaders understand that as many disagree with that position as are members of the NRA. You can read the response letter at http://wh.gov/Rord

2. Good idea. I didn't know the NRA only had 4 million members.

So where do they get the power they have over our politicians?

The arms industry I know is extremely powerful and wealthy worldwide, but isn't the NRA supposed to just be a domestic organization? Who is behind them, maybe it's time to find out?

4. compared to a lot of other organizations with clout on firearm laws they are big

ACLU only has 500,000 members, and the Brady Campaign has less than 28,000.

6. It consists of more than one organization

Snipped from:

How The NRA Became The Most Powerful Special Interest In Washington

Chris Cilizza points out that in 2010, the NRA spent more than $240 million more than the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, the biggest spender among gun control groups.

The primary organization is the National Rifle Association of America, a 501(c)4 organization. This is the group that maintains the spokespeople, raises the money, counts the members, recruits volunteers, and raises awareness and encourages the use of firearms. They advertise, hold conventions, convince country singers and actors to raise awareness about gun use, produce training materials and coordinate volunteers.

Within the National Rifle Association of America is the NRA Institute for Legislative Action. This is the NRA main lobbying and campaign operation. NRA-ILA maintains a staff of lobbyists to support pro-gun legislation, and runs most of the election operations for the organization, producing and buying advertisements in support of pro-gun candidates and against gun control advocates. The NRA-ILA also manages the NRA Political Action Committee, which contributes money directly to candidates.

The NRA is also connected to a 501(c)3, the NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund, which does pro-bono legal work for people with cases that have to do with constitutional Second Amendment rights. Essentially, if the CRDF finds a case that could lead to a new interpretation of the Second Amendment, they'll send in the cavalry and pay the bill. They're currently litigating cases in 35 states about the right to posses, use, and carry arms.

In addition, the organization is connected to the NRA Foundation, another 501(c)3 that raises and donates money to hundreds of different causes. In 2010, recipients included hundreds of organizations including outdoors groups, sportsmen's associations, state Fish & Game departments, ROTC organizations, 4-H groups, Boy Scout councils, and children's charities. Much of this went to purchasing equipment and training to encourage the recreational use of firearms.

9. So we just shrug and say 'these thing happen, nothing to be done'?

It took 70 years for women to get the vote. It was a battle worth fighting, no matter how long it took. So is this one.

15. That exactly what the gunheads are hoping for.

They don't get that they have already lost, it's simply a matter of time. The tipping point has been passed.

Don't let that stop you from crapping your pants and being terrified of your neighbors.

12. Tell that to the 20 dead kids. And the 10,000 Americans who DIE every year by guns.

The idiots who are "crapping in their pants and being terrified of their neighbors" are the cordite-aroused gun humpers who worship death and are too stupid to get the connection.

13. 20 Dead children doesn't change the fact that we are living in the most peaceful era ever witnessed

And insulting people just demonstrates that you have no reasonable response to someone calling out your unjustified paranoia.

18. Lets aspire to be better...

There is very little reason to believe that chopping up the bill of rights will get us there.

Lets do that through progressive economic policies. Lets take care of the most vulnerable people in society. Lets offer humane long term care for the mentally unstable. Lets stop being terrified of our neighbors despite living in the most peaceful era of all time.

14. Change the title to something less hysterical...

and I'll sign.

It's a good idea and I'm sure there are more than 4 million folks out there who'd join you...maybe even current NRA members who just can't accept the current party line.

16. Which title? on this thread or on the petition?

Repeal the Second Amendment Now is the title of the petition.

What's a less hysterical title you suggest?
