Pennsylvania man cites Newtown while ripping down atheist holiday display

By Stephen C. Webster
Friday, December 21, 2012

A banner that was recently hung in a public space by a local atheist group in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania got chopped down this week by a young man who cited the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut as his reason.

Local news channel WNEP-TV filmed the man, who identified himself as Joe McDonald, climbing 30 feet up to where the banner was hung, cutting it down, and replacing it with an American flag.

“I just think in the light of the elementary school massacre in Connecticut, that we shouldn’t be divided as a country over petty stuff like is there a God or isn’t there a God,” McDonald reportedly said. “If they wanted to put the sign down here with us, that’s fine because we’re united. But to put it above everybody? No, it’s symbolic.”

The banner was placed in a public space where other groups have erected holiday displays like a Nativity and a Menorah. The Freedom From Religion Foundation paid the city $50 to hang the banner for one week.

This video is from WNEP-TV 16 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, aired Thursday, December 20, 2012.

2. the question of the existence of god is "petty stuff", but the height of a banner is a big deal?

of course he objects to the placement of the banner so he doesn't move it but he tears it down.

In PA that happened at the very time LaPierre was insulting the nation.
At least four are dead.

Has Rush been spilling the God out of schools cause BS? This guy looks pretty young to have those views.

10. He's against atheists. How can you arrest someone who's against atheists in this Christian nation?

Why, that feller's a dabgum hero! And, he's a uniter, not a divider. And a decider, too. We like that in a dude.

Some answers are easy.

15. Ask me why I'm an atheist:

Christianity: Sending telepathic messages to a Jewish ghost letting him know that you will accept him as your master and ask him to remove a magical curse that was passed down to you because a woman who was made from the rib of her partner ate a piece of magical fruit from a magical tree because a talking snake told her to.

Riii-ght!

Ask me again why I'm an atheist.

16. It's interesting to me that the TV news crew was there when all this was going on

I wonder if there's a relationship...

Anyway, I assume that carefully and respectfully removing the American flag, as it shouldn't be used in such a manner as this, from where Mr. McDonald hung it and replacing it with Mr. McDonald, suspended by a loop of rope under his arms, would be wrong.

17. The American Flag represents this guy's God?

Does he pray to the ghost of George Washington or something?
