They don't
They are Lobbyists.
They are the 'voice' for Gun Manufacturers.
The job of the NRA is to make Americans believe that 'guns will be confiscated' and 'you'll lose those pesky 2nd amendment rights'. They've been spouting that doom & gloom for decades now.
Some Americans see thru their bullshit.
But there's alot that don't and what do they do - buy more guns.
And when these people buy more guns, gun manufacturers make more profit.
The NRA/Gun Manufacturers are all about profits. They make sure that guns laws aren't passed so that guns are easy to purchase. They also make sure they frighten Americans into thinking that they may not be able to buy guns one day so you better buy them now. And these people don't give a rats ass who buys them just like for the longest time the Tobacco Lobbyists/Industry didn't care for the longest time who smoked and even created tobacco ads to help promote smoking with young people.
Personally I think we should do to the NRA/Gun Manufacturers the same thing we did to the Tobacco Lobbyists/Industry - make them pay. When you are careless with your product to the point that people are dying then you show be held accountable.
And if you think about it, after all the Tobacco lawsuits & settlements did we ever take away the right for law abiding smokers to buy cigarettes? No we just made it safer.

(115,681 posts)it can be interpreted as conferring on everyone the right to own any kind of guns they want. At one time, maybe until 30 years ago or thereabouts, the NRA really was a sportsmen's organization whose emphasis was on gun safety and education. But then it got into the lobbying business; that's where the money and influence are, after all. Why waste time just teaching pheasant-hunting kids how to climb over a fence without shooting their feet off when you could collect big bucks on behalf of, and from, the gun manufacturers?
And here we are.

(12,647 posts)why these same gun owners who fight against any kind of state record of their gun ownership, so willingly joins the NRA and are therefore put on a list as a gun owner. Particularly when you consider the NRA's close relationship with the Republican party, and it was Republican President George Bush who went door to door in New Orleans and confiscated guns after Katrina.

(95,337 posts)and we know their rights mean squat to the republican party.

(1,372 posts)Regardless if the NRA does support gun manufacturers
They still
Look to support the 2nd ammendment
Support the availability of various competitions
Support safety training
Support various training accredidation programs
The NRA may support gun manufacturers but, in the process they don't screw their members.
also, the gun manufacturers are not careless with their product.
They manufacture a firearm and sell them thru dealers controlled by the government.
About sueing the cigarette manufacturers:
Now cigs are taxed so much that it makes it hard to afford cigarettes
and some states have banned smoking in restaurants - I think it should be up to the business owner whether they are smoking or non
And, NO, I am not a cigarette smoker
We have a problem with unstable people getting guns.
We need to work together to resolve the problem.
We do have a belief that people should have the freedom or choice to live as they see fit
and that their rights should not be limited if they are law abiding citizens who have done nothing wrong
That's more than I can say about our congress who is selling us out to big business and the wealthy
and is too stupid to know that the way out of this recession is thru middle class spending
(which they do very well, when gven he money spend.)
