So many guns in this country

they aren't going anywhere. I think police should have a greater presence in schools at this point. We secure our banks, our airports, our malls, walmarts and all sorts of other places why not schools full of innocence, I think the NRA is a little late with this issue. Tax gun and ammo sales nationwide and use the cash for security. A gun free society obviously would be the best solution, but 300 million guns and counting makes that wish a dream.

1. Sure, let's just go full tilt paranoid rather than addressing the issue

...in a productive way. The 2nd Amendment trumps all other rights. USA USA.

We're a bunch of fucking cowards who get what we deserve if we go further down this insane road.

13. Raising our children to be fearful unless an armed officer is nearby is SICK.

Once you finish hardening all our schools and shooters move on to other soft targets, do you then propose to have armed police stationed at every park, playground and Dairy Queen? When is our right to live in peace without guns reinstated?

Screw that. The 2nd Amendment does NOT trump everything else. It will not be protected at the sacrifice of freedom.

I shot a gun once at a skeet shooting event couldn't hit the side of a barn. When I was younger 12 or so I killed a bird with a bb gun and felt sick to my stomach. It is funny that an attempt at making sense and finding solutions is shunned. What should we do then? Out right bans arent going to happen and their are a whole lot of guns in this country. By the way dont assume you know everything.

in her kindergarten. We should be teaching kids from the time they're two that guns are PURE EVIL. We don't need to show kids more and more guns.

And yes we should tax each sale or swap or a gun and all ammo at 150% of its value. Price the damn things out of the reach of 90% of the people.

In my neck of the woods that is what we have there was a shooting a the mall a few weeks back now a new substation is in the works for the mall. Why because it wasn't the first by a long shot and unfortunately wont be the last. Go to the theater and a armed security is already guarding the entrance. If they could guard these places what is wrong with guarding the most vulnerable

22. The point is they shouldn't have to guard those places

There's plenty we can do to get the gun problem under control. It's not a black and white issue, all or nothing. The NRA and rabid right MAKE it so by blocking any regulation that would mitigate gun violence and stirring their supporters up with fears of government confiscations every time a Dem is in office. They're the ones behind the proliferation of guns. They're the ones responsible for the paranoia that makes people like Lanza's mother (allegedly) arm themselves, resulting in more and more guns in the wrong hands. We need comprehensive reform, including a stop to the propaganda of fear that drives the purchase of guns.

It can be done. And for all the work it'll take, it's far preferable to living and raising our children in a total police state where suspicion and fear become the norm.

26. Here's a better answer to your suggestion that we turn the playgrounds into armed

camps:

http://www.politicalgarbagechute.com/the-most-revolting-press-conference-in-history/

Every American should be shocked and appalled that this was the great NRA’s suggestion. It takes a special kind of evil or stupid to suggest not a week after twenty children less than ten years old were viciously gunned down that the reason it happened was a lack of armed guards at our elementary schools. The irony of a group that’s run by a bunch of NeoConservative neanderthals who belch out platitudes about freedom while un-ironically insisting the only way to protect our children is to turn our schools into prison camps with armed guards is simply too delectable to not savor just a tiny bit.

But the humor of the moment dies down as soon as you realize that not only did the NRA not learn anything last Friday, or from the subsequent outpouring of sorrow and grief over the tragedy, they’re doubling-down on their obsession with and promotion of guns. Just stop and think for a moment. In Wayne LaPierre and the NRA’s minds, it is more acceptable to turn our schools into armed facilities than it is to tell Americans we have to temper a Constitutional right with prudence. Rather than ask gun nuts to relinquish their assault rifles, which no non-combat civilian has any logical reason to own, it’s better to put yet another gun in our children’s lives.

Their solution is to simply put another dangerous firearm next to your sons and daughters, on a daily basis. What kind of message is the NRA sending the American people? I’ll tell you what kind of message they’re sending. The profit margins of the corporations they represent are more important than your children not growing up with armed guards in their schools. That is not a conducive learning environment, to the say the very least. “Johnny, please stop staring at the hulking man with a semi-automatic firearm at the front of the class and tell me who’s buried in Grant’s Tomb.”

No sane or rationally thinking adult should agree to this atrocious idea. Our country was not founded on the idea that our need for firearms supersedes our children’s need to learn in a conducive, safe environment. That is just not an acceptable solution to the problem. I can entertain the notion of mental health reforms being a big focus of resources, but I will not now, nor will I ever in the future support the further infiltration of gun culture into our kids’ lives by planting armed guards at our schools.

I wouldn't let my child hang out in a park at night. Neither did my parents, and I grew up in a snoozy suburb in the 60s. Parks can be notoriously difficult to police even during the day. And who's going to pay for the armed brigades of police it would take? Who's going to pay for ALL the police you plan on having occupy every public space?

Your idea is very shortsighted for any number of reasons.

46. I support NOT relying on those we pay to protect...to protect.

Which of course is how so many people justify having guns...primarily to protect themselves from others who have guns.

Get rid of the guns, and the whole protection part becomes A LOT easier.

56. What

is stupid is not facing the fact that there are 300 million guns in this country. We cant ignore that. It is a reality. A Republican congress is a reality. 90,000 shootings a year reality. Even if we had an incredible drop in that number lets say gun violence dropped by 50% over night that is still 45,000 shot and over 4000 killed that would be a reality. 2nd amendment reality supreme court rulings going in the wrong direction a reality. So do we unrealistically wish that a ban on guns will make it all go away. Something tells me we will all be wishing along time.

55. Here on DU I have read idolator arguments saying guns are needed cuz cops...

...are not obliged to defend us. Now those of the same point of view (2nd amendment trumps all) are calling for more cops to defend us.
If we have cops, we don't need personal guns.
If we need guns, we don't need cops.
Certainly guns are more prevalent than consistency or concern for society.

62. suggestion

Try to save you're children and your grand children by giving them a good education so they can get employment outside of America. Have them learn languages they can use in employment outside of America. If you would like to see them go to Canada knowing French would help . There is no other country in the world that is gun crazy like America. Canadians are now are thinking twice about going to America for vacations. I am not going and I know of three other couples not going.. it is scary.
