1. it's not only the right wingers coming out against him

the Washington Post has as well

there are other candidates out there that would be better than Hagel and not as controversial

2. He's not controversial at all. Unless you consider not kissing

another nation's ass controversial. Edit to add: The WaPo editorial board is apparently Neocon cheerleaders, too. Hagel doesn't want war with Iran, and thinks the DoD is "bloated"--that is a real problem for defense contractors, isn't it?

6. how about his vote not to name Iranian Revolutionary Guard

as a terrorist organization when there is proof that the IRG has been involved with terrorist activities in the region

18. Does that matter? Maybe that's a meaningless gesture

that he doesn't think is helpful?

7. The DoD is bloated, all right.

It could well be considered the single biggest employer in the world. It gets over half of the discretionary budget. I'd be amazed if anyone could drain that pork barrel.

9. so Hagel is the only one who can cut the budget there

how about someone who has actually worked in the Pentagon or do you consider someone like that part of the problem

if so, why should we trust Obama to cut the budget since it's still bloated

13. I honestly don't think anyone can cut it.

Increasing the budget kills foreigners in another country. Cutting the budget kills jobs over here. Which option are pols going to choose?
