Metal Detectors in Schools - Good idea or bad?

I'm torn on this, because on one hand it just furthers the mentality that school is prison....

BUT...it could keep out guns.

1. I don't see how this helps in the case of Newtown.

Lanza would have just barrelled through the metal detector and started shooting. It wouldn't have stopped him.

7. Or any similar scenario, frankly.

There might be other security reasons for it (students carrying weapons, a big problem in some districts), but I can't see it making the slightest difference in stopping a spree killing. the murderer is going to know it's there and will bypass it or just come in shooting.

2. My son attended high school in Dayton Ohio

where violence was a huge problem. Hell, even the ice cream man that parked out front was busted selling crack from his vehicle. Once they installed metal detectors and hired security guards to patrol, violence dropped by 90%

3. How will a metal detector stop someone bent on mass murder?

How will the people at the metal detector stop someone with a gun, if the person with the gun, does not want to be stopped?

If you say arm the people at the metal detector, you just made them a sitting duck for an ambush, with next to no chance to defend themselves from even a poorly planned ambush from a armed assailant.

Mental Health is the real issue here..

The only guns a metal detector would keep out was the ones a kid might accidently bring to school, or bring to "show off". But it would NEVER stop a mass murder... But it would stop pocket knives and such.

4. beeeeeeeeeeeeeeep doesn't keep out guns.

all they do is make a noise.

if someone has a knife or a gun and is merely packing, not intending to immediately use it, then yes, someone alerted by the beep can ask for the weapon. and there may be some merit in that.

but if someone wants to go in shooting, or go in through a window, a metal detector isn't very effective.

so, to be clear, this is a solution for a different problem. not the sensational mass murders, but the far less sensational routine violence -- school kids get into fights sometimes, and perhaps we should make sure they don't carry knives and guns because of that.
