READERíS EDITORIAL: REFLECTIONS ON THE SANDY HOOK TRAGEDY

December 18, 2012 (San Diegoís East County)--It's not easy to speak of what happened last week at Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut, where a gunman opened fire. It is harder because this is not the first mass shooting, and probably will not be the last. But with the slaughter of 20 innocent children and 6 adults, we might finally hit a tipping point in how we look at guns and our culture.

I come at this not just as a gun owner, but also as a former first responder who saw firsthand what a NATO round or a Warsaw round can do to the human body. Mexico, where I worked with the Red Cross, is a place where these weapons are used regularly by the cartels.

It is a searing experience to have to transport an eight year old to the trauma center, with one or more of these rounds in his little body. It is even more searing when you have to reach for the sheet and cover the now lifeless body.

1. Very fine piece, Nadin.

Great suggestions. I'm particularly impressed with the idea of smart gun tech.

Thanks.

4. This is a solid article.

The one thing I would add is that we need to tighten up handgun restrictions. In many of these shootings, multiple handguns were used. I think handguns need to be subject to much more stringent regulations than hunting weapons. No one shoots a deer with a 9mm Glock. Handguns are used disproportionately in gun crimes compared to long guns. If you wish to possess multiple hand guns, you should be subject to a myriad of restriction requirements on their purchase, possession, and resale.

A great many sportsmen have urged me to support this bill. It is hard for me to understand the interest of sportsmen in pistols. I myself have fished and hunted a great deal. I have a deep interest in outdoor sports and the various associations which foster them, but it is common knowledge, of course, that fishermen never use a pistol and hunters practically never use a pistol... theoretical self-protection, the value of a revolver is very problematical.

- Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1931, opposing the Hanley-Fake firearms bill which would have increased access to hanguns.

6. I know.

Implied actually...with the discussion of what civilians can own.

But I will be happy if we start having the discussion on trigger pull...just now on the Ed show.

10. Noted.

I think it's probably one aspect of gun control reform that hasn't been discussed extensively on DU in the last few days.

12. We did at home.

The problem is that it would require a strong buy back program

8. Thanks

The discussions here, believe it or not were pre-writing exercises.
