Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Tue Dec 18, 2012, 08:54 PM

For all the DU clairvoyants who absolutely know what Obama is going to do...

how about supplying us with some winning lottery numbers or other fruits of your prognosticative powers that we would find useful...

As far as I can tell, much hand wringing is happening with no concrete information

1. how about allowing people to have opinions and

express them without mockery? If they are wrong, they are wrong. But consider this. What if they are right? Given my age, this whole business is deeply important to me. Thanks.

3. I don't know what he is going to do but I do know what Jay Carney has admitted to...

And yes, chained CPI is on the table. There are hints that Social Security and other programs that serve the poor are exempt in his proposal but how would we know. We The People aren't allowed to see it. But, even if SS and other programs are exempt, chained CPI will result in an increase in taxes with the poor and labor classes getting the biggest hit.

The Chained CPI would also effectively raise taxes on virtually all working Americans, especially middle and lower income families. By applying it to all government programs, including the annual adjustment in income tax brackets, the Chained CPI would cause those thresholds to rise more slowly than they do now. That would lead to incomes jumping up to higher tax brackets faster, or in other words, income tax increases.
According to Congress’ Joint Committee on Taxation, if individual income taxes were indexed to the Chained CPI starting in January 2013, by 2021, 69 percent of the gains in revenue would come from taxpayers with incomes below $100,000, while those in the highest income brackets would barely be affected. For example, workers with incomes between $10,000 and $20,000 would experience an increased tax burden of 14.5 percent, while those with incomes over $1,000,000 would just see an increase of 0.1 percent. 9 This contradicts the idea that the negative effects from benefit cuts due to a switch to the Chained CPI would be offset by increased revenue from the wealthy.

The above is an excerpt from a report from the Center For Economic And Policy Research. You can download the report from this page:

and projecting his past actions into the future ain't that difficult, nor that unlikely. He's still the man he was last time.

10. It's a corporate game, and a very ugly one.

This is not only about Social Security. Not by a long shot.

In the worst case scenario, seniors are horrifically betrayed, violated, and assaulted by a Democratic President. At the very least, we are being propagandized to be grateful and consider it a great win if the President merely REFRAINS from one additional, vicious blow to the weakest among us, in the middle of a sea of other corporate assaults. In other words, the one percent cynically expect us to mistake the withholding of a contrived threat for actual representation and advocacy on our behalf.

That's not going to fly anymore.

This is about much more than Social Security
