Just figured out how to empty out an old gift card

I got a couple VISA gift cards from work a couple months ago for doing a very good job and getting recognized by a company VP for that work. I had gotten it down to the last $8.40 and was trying to figure out what to use those final few dollars on. Well, it came to me today.

I just made a $8.40 donation to Planned Parenthood!

2. did you know

that those cards are bought and sold and resold to companies that hope to profit off the unused portion of those cards.
Good for you!!

5. Are you saying payments can't be split with gift cards?

That's never been an issue for me in the past.

Kudos all the same for what you did with the remainder. Bloody good idea.

6. It can be done

Lets say you have 8.00 on a gift card and a 20.00 transaction. If the cashier trys to run it for 20.00, it will be declined. If you tell the cashier, to please run it for 8.00, it will be approved, then you can pay the remaining balance however you want, so when it gets low, write the balance on the card.

I always pay the small balance towards my cell phone bill. Its easy enough to log on, and pay the few bucks, then when the bill comes in the mail its a bit cheaper.

11. Depends...web sites generally don't let one do that

And when I tried to use it up at a restaurant in St. Louis with the thought of paying the rest with my regular card it wouldn't go through so I just said heck with that and paid with my regular card.

7. Awesome

Great idea and much better than letting the money default back to the corporation.

12. good use of the $. Also, you can use them at stores like Target that allow multiple payments

The payment thingy asks "How much on this card", you type in $1.30, then it moves on the next form of payment.
