Help Finding A Good Progressive Book For A Present!
I Have a 12 year (6th grade) old son and I'm looking for a good book to get him for Xmas. According to his teacher he reads at a 10th grade level and sometimes picks books that are below his level. When I talked to him he said that his library at school doesn't really have many books that would really challenge him. So I want to get him something good, but also challenging and will convey progressive ideas. I got him "A Children's History Of The United States" by Zinn last year. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thankshttp://

Fiction: I was assigned to read "Slaughterhouse-5" when I was 11 years old. Anything by Vonnegut would be good for him.
Non-fiction: There are several biographies of FDR that are excellent and give good background on various topics (not just his life), i.e. how repigs tried to destroy America's economy and how FDR saved it.
Most any biography is good for a kid, because it engages them & teaches them history at the same time. Pick your Liberal hero, check out the reviews at amazon.com, and then BUY LOCAL ()

2. Thank You
I did the my hero thing with Zinn. He was the person who really started the change the led me out of the "Regurgitation" of all the Conservative ideas with out any thought that had been pounded into my head for 26 years. Anyway, I'm thinking about going the fiction route since I did Zinn last year. The "Slaughterhouse-5" is a great one, so thanks again. Oh, and I always try to buy local as well.
