School massacre 1927

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_School_disaster

This really surprised me. Doing more research on mass killing in history. Seems there were many occurences without assault weapons and large ammo clips in the past. Just as many killed if not more. This one, bombs were used. Rate of occurence should be proportionate to increase in population. I still feel psychotropic drugs and the closing of mental institutions are playing an extemely large part in this. I did a poll awhile back on the subject of removal of all guns in this country. 100% agreed that it would not be possible ever. This was when emotions were not the ruler. It's imperative all of us agree to a solution that is obtainable and will do something to greatly lower the amount of this type of tragedy. It is a mental issue. Nothing else. If you believe otherwise you are doing nothing in rememberance of the fallen and in prevention. Going the route of assault weapon and clip ban will be the demise of the party in 2014. A gun is just a barrel with a bullet in it. Doesn't matter what it looks like. They all can kill. If you think a ban is possible on semi auto you're sorely mistaken.

140. 1929 had the most mass killings in U.S. history

Mass killings are nothing new. Saturation coverage is relatively new. That doesn't mean I agree with the OP on assault weapons, but there hasn't been an increase in mass killings.

153. Well, it was the Prohibition / Gangster / Great Depression era....

I realized that after I asked the question that it might not be a good example, although as per a post below there was some legislation passed in 1934.

article to try and prove the gun nutters' point that guns don't kill people and that mass murders of children have always been a part of our culture. Watch for it. This is today's version. "One child is too many." You make me want to puke. You can write that while defending the ownership of assault weapons when they are the weapon of choice for mass murderers. YOU SERIOUSLY NEED TO STOP AND THINK before you write. Or maybe you just need to stop and think PERIOD. Stop and think, for ONE MINUTE...Could I be wrong? What about that? Could YOU be wrong?

If I am wrong, you don't get to have your favorite hobby gun. Cause that is all it is really good for. You can hunt with something else.

The OP is making a valid point. The gun-banning zealots are merely using the recent tragedy towards political ends. We can ban all guns, crazy people will still commit mass slaughter and criminals will still get guns and kill people. I guess the gun-banners will be thrilled when 30,000 people a year are killed by weapons other than guns. Is that the only solution?

156. Your straw man is even worse than the OP

No, the OP is full of shit. It's about a massacre by a man who had weeks to plan it, and special access to the school. But, when it happened, they stopped selling pyrotol to the public, tightened up access to dynamite, and -lo! No more mass killings with dynamite or pyrotol! But the OP tries to say "no, banning the method of killing never works". They're wrong.

"Using the recent tragedy towards political ends"? It's RegieRocker who is saying "you can't tighten up gun laws, or the Democrats will lose the election in 2014". "The gun-banning zealots", as you want to malign them, want to make it more difficult to kill people. Not to get votes, but because it's the right thing.

"I guess the gun-banners will be thrilled when 30,000 people a year are killed by weapons other than guns. Is that the only solution?"

Christ, what a fuck-witted straw man that is. It would look stupid even among the crap Fox News puts out. No, that won't happen. It doesn't happen, in reality. There is no other developed country with anything approaching the murder rate of the USA. People cannot murder as many people with other methods. It's the easy availability of guns that marks out the USA.

The truth is, a reasonable and responsible level of regulation is enough to prevent some mass-murder, or to limit the scope of what does occur. The fallacy of the OP is that if you can't prevent all the killing, its not worth preventing some of the killing.

Not bothering to try sends its own signal.

His goal was volume (huge number of deaths), and he used the material which was available to him. These days, people with that mind-set also use what's readily available ..and that just happens to be guns.

It's rather interesting that your list contains all these places outside the US, and you then link to a US list as your source.

Good job making yourself believable.

You were asked for the source of your information that included non-US places.

You provided a list that only included the US.

Now, most of us would understand that you didn't manage to provide the source to your original list. Which is what was requested.

120. In what way do I 'think like one'? No, I'm not right wing.

For instance, I don't post articles about explosives massacres to try to cast doubt on the danger of guns, that accidentally point out that restrictions on things used to kill are successful. I'm in favour of gun control. I know that evolution by natural selection is real, and I have a healthy respect for science. I don't spout crap like "Evolution is a twisted fucked up idea that doesnt prove anything but only to morons".

You seemed reluctant to actually tell people where your 'facts' ("Ryan Lanz" - oh, yeah, great 'facts' you've got there) came from. So I helped people. Unlike you.

36. And large capacity magazines

It's not necessary to have the capacity to fire that many shots. It's a bullshit argument that it is for self-defense, because one or two shots is all you need for self-defense. Large capacity magazines are for bragging rights and nutty people going on rampages. If you need that damn many shots, you aren't a good one and shouldn't be using a damn gun.

34. It's time

to ban assault weapons and large capacity magazines. I agree that it is a mental issue, but only people with mental issues need to be able to kill people that quickly. Enough is enough. Explain to me why a person needs to own a large capacity magazine if it isn't to kill people quickly before the police can intervene. Explain why you need an assault rifle if it isn't to kill people.

And don't tell me you need it for self-defense. If you need it for self-defense, one or two shots will do it. Unless you are in a warzone you don't need to fire that many shots, and I think a lot of us are tired of our cities being turned into warzones because of people that go bananas and shoot up the place because they have killing weapons that are too efficient.

Because you can't. It's bragging rights is what you are after, and there is nothing to be bragged about in the ability to kill so many people at once. Nothing.

Um, yeah, in a warzone you need that. You don't need that in civilian life. And you aren't going to convince anyone with two brain cells to rub together that you need that for self-defense.

I'm from the South. I've grown up around guns and hunters all of my life. I've fired a few of them. I've never needed 20 and 30 rounds to hit what I was aiming at, and if you do, then I suggest you take up a different hobby.

and not everyone can change one in 2 seconds. If you are firing that many damn shots in a non-warzone, you aren't doing it for good reasons, and it certainly isn't for self-defense purposes.

That's why.

60. Then start advocating more responsible policies

For crying out loud, you would think that by saying restricting assault weapons and large capacity magazines people are asking for the sun, moon and stars. *YOU* might not be the problem, but there are enough problems without putting too much firepower in the hands of nuts.

Again, nobody needs a huge magazine or an assault rifle. You don't. Wouldn't you give up just one of your guns to have one of those precious little children be alive? Please say that you would. This has gotten to be too serious for us not to address it as a nation.

more than likely won't happen. I don't have one to give up. I happen to know it won't make a differnce. I feel it is going to take more than that to make a difference that matters. And so far, most here are against those. They have made it real clear what they want. No guns. To think that most don't see this is a mistake. What heppens when assault weapons are illegal and no clips with more than a 5 round capacity does nothing to stop this violence?

And it can happen, and it likely WILL happen so please get used to the idea. People in this nation are tired as hell of high capacity magazines and assault weapons killing people. No one is fooled by the idea that preventing the mass spread of lethal weapons won't help the situation. No one.

To say any different is to say that guns don't kill people - they do. They do good things, but they do bad things too, and we need a responsible gun policy. Nobody is saying we don't need them. Gasoline is handy, but you don't throw it on a fire, either.

When the shooter stopped to reload.

Boy it sure is unreasonable to think that reloading is somehow going to make these events less deadly. Not to mention that carrying 3 30-round clips is a lot easier than 18 5-round clips.

Loughner stopped to reload, but dropped the loaded magazine from his pocket to the sidewalk, from where bystander Patricia Maisch grabbed it. Another bystander clubbed the back of the assailant's head with a folding chair, injuring his elbow in the process, representing the 14th injury.

A 74-year-old retired Army colonel decided to tackle the Tucson gunman after watching him shoot a little girl.

"Something had to be done," Bill Badger said today on "Good Morning America."

Badger wasn't the only one who risked his life to stop the carnage. One man clobbered alleged gunman Jared Loughner on the back of the head with a folding chair. A 61-year-old woman wrestled a fresh magazine away from Loughner as he tried to reload.

It would be a good start

http://www.fedcoplaw.com/html/Federal%20Explosives%20and%20Bombing%20Laws.dwt.htm

B. LICENSEE

1. A person who intends to engage in the business of importing, manufacturing, or dealing in explosives
must first apply for a license from the ATF, § 842 (a)(1).

a. A criminal background check will be conducted on each applicant and each employee authorized
by the applicant to possess explosives, §§ 843 (a) & (h).
b. An applicant must have business premises and approved explosives storage facilities before a
license may be issued, § 843 (b)(3) & (4)(A).
c. A person who engages in the explosives business without a license commits a felony crime and if
convicted can receive up to 10 years in Federal prison, § 842 (a)(1) (e.g., making and selling M-80,
M-100, M-250 and M-1000 explosive devices).

d. An applicant who knowingly lies to ATF to obtain a license or permit commits a felony crime and if
convicted can receive up to 10 years in Federal prison, § 842 (a)(2).

That would be fine with me. Thanks for bringing it up!

I mean, I was previously just talking about limiting clip size and other minor things. But if you think we should require a very difficult-to-get permit, massive auditing requirements and all sorts of other regulations for guns, let's do it.

Or perhaps you didn't bother to think this thing through.

151. I've done a lot of research on the Bath murders and you've forgotten some information.

The man who perpetrated the crime was a disgruntled school board member who was angry with the school because he blamed the school for raising his taxes....sound familiar? He wired the schools with explosives while pretending to do repairs on the school. Then he went home and shot his wife burning her body in a shed. He loaded his truck with homemade bombs filled with nails and shrapnel and called the superintendent asking him to meet him in front of the school. When the superintendent arrived and came to the car he detonated the bombs both in the school and in the truck and killed himself as well as everyone else. Although he himself was responsible for his business failures he was described as a paranoid blamed who obsessed about his fears and blamed others for everything that happened to him. I see parallels with paranoid gun owners and with factions currently holding sway in the Republican Party. He did use a gun on his wife, but he needed to kill more people, especially in the school. If he had been able to get a semi automatic weapon who knows.
