Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

This time it's finally happening. The move is on for gun control.

I think a lot of the political allies of the NRA are going to suddenly see themselves as standing out in the thunderstorm of public outrage with lightning rods in their hands. One way or the other, they won't be out there long.

5. Like that's going to work.

The ones that disagree are still accepting money from the NRA, and unless you find them wearing garters and stockings...I doubt anything will shame them into not taking that free cash.

4. We don't know until we try

I do know that the government with the help of concerned citizens can make every gundealer's life miserable.

Hey Anonymous, we need your help with these gun pushers.

3. No it's not.

What's going on is both sides trying to make points...because no one has defined exactly what they want and what they are willing to settle for.

I said that in another thread.

9. Do what worked in Australia. It is posted somewhere here today and it worked.

And now is the time to do it because a week from now, if the history of these massacres is any guide, it will all be forgotten and an opportunity once again, missed. Which is what the Gun Lobby is hoping for.

10. I expect the gun nutters to start thowing EVERYTHING at the wall in desperation

I also suspect some of the more recent CT crap being thrown up about the case is also desperate attempts at redirection.

12. Remember how the Right screamed about Global Warming...so someone cleverly renamed it Climate Change

and now we talk about it, somewhat rationally than before. I think Gun Control carries a lot of the same baggage and tends to set off a lot of triggers and I'd just like to bring up the term Gun Management. It sounds less threatening to our more conservative and controlling folk, and more like a professional and organized task of creating order ... not suggesting the "wrenching from the cold, dead hands" from some of our elder folk.

Just a thought.

13. MMPI

I had a student that I helped get his diploma so he could join the military. He was rejected for psychological reasons. The screening tool was probably the MMPI. This should be part of the discussion.

18. I agree: the tipping point has been reached

Public sentiment and political will are coalescing in this moment. Polls show a majority favoring various types of gun-control legislation. Conservative Democrats and some formerly NRA Republicans are coming out in favor. Joe Scarborough even did a big "mea culpa, I've changed my mind" television editorial.

It may not be the exact legislation we want, it may not be strong enough. But it will be the first foot in the door since the 1990s. Let's seize the moment, accept what we can get as a starting point, and keep working from there. Let's not try for "comprehensive" legislation. Let's walk this through one obvious, rational, do-able step at a time.

is a radical change in the gun laws and attitudes too.

20. Unfortunately it's not going to happen.

All of us are excercised over the massacre in Connecticut, rightly so. But human nature is what it is, and the human mind wants to get away from tragic thoughts asap. With Christmas next week, then New Years plus the Fiscal Cliff on the front page we will be distracted enough so that, by January it'll be business as usual.
