Dear God! When Will It Stop? by Marian Wright Edelman

The horrendous news from Newtown, Connecticut has pierced our hearts. Allegedly, a black-clad man in his 20s armed with two semi-automatic handguns entered the Sandy Hook Elementary School and made an elementary school for kindergartners through fourth graders the scene of the worst mass shooting in a public school in American history. Reportedly, 20 children were shot and killed, and seven adults were shot and killed. We donít yet know how many were wounded. We do know dozens of parents are experiencing the worst nightmare any parent could imagine. We do know more than 500 young children in the school are traumatized.

Once again we are faced with unspeakable horror from gun violence and once again we are reminded that there is no safe harbor for our children. How young do the victims have to be and how many children need to die before we stop the proliferation of guns in our nation and the killing of innocents? The most recent statistics reveal 2,694 children and teens were killed by gunfire in 2010; 1,773 of them were victims of homicide and 67 of these were elementary school-age children. If those children and teens were still alive they would fill 108 classrooms of 25 each. Since 1979 when gun death data were first collected by age, a shocking 119,079 children and teens have been killed by gun violence. That is more child and youth deaths in America than American battle deaths in World War I (53,402) or in Vietnam (47,434) or in the Korean War (33,739) or in the Iraq War (3,517). Where is our anti-war movement to protect children from pervasive gun violence here at home?

This slaughter of innocents happens because we protect guns before children and other human beings. Our hearts and prayers go out to the parents and teachers and children and the entire Newtown community that has been ripped apart by each bullet shot this morning. We know from past school shootings and the relentless killing of children every day that Newtown families and the community will never be the same. The Newtown families who lost children today will never be the same. The families of the teachers who were killed will never be the same. Every child at the Sandy Hook Elementary School this morning will never be the same.

5. Unfortunately, this idea will lose steam before action is taken.

The holidays will come, New Years will go down as always. Then the focus will be on other matters. We as a people will lose focus, because the media that is carrying and feeding of such horror will move on. Some Celebutant will go out in public without a bra, or panties, or something will flash to the photographers. A sex tape will leak to the press, something will happen to distract us. And we will go back to our lives, comfortable, and forget the horror.

Then it will happen again, and again, and again. And each time, we'll look at each other and say someone should do something. But we will never do anything. We'll blame Republicans. We'll talk about ways to get around the Second Amendment, but we will do nothing.

In the end, tens of thousands will die each year, and we'll claim to care, but we will do nothing as a nation. We won't even seriously try to amend the Constitution. We'll talk about what judges we can appoint to the Supreme Court because that way we can pretend we're doing something.

The ERA made it through Congress, an all male congress. It was the States where we failed. We could do it again with a repeal of the 2nd, but we won't. It's just too hard, and nobody is willing to do the hard thing that they can't get credit for in the term which the propose it. That is why Nixon canceled the plans to go to Mars. Because there was no way it could be done in his terms, and he wouldn't get the credit. That's why President Obama won't even suggest it. Because even if it went through Congress, it wouldn't be approved by the States in this term.

Meaningful action? Pfui. We won't even have a meaningful discussion.

8. Not this time. Too many people are saying this is the boulder that broke the elephant's back.

15. If only it was just the minority Rethugs

Unfortunately, far too many Democrats also worship at the alter of the NRA. Many here even have permits to carry concealed, and walk around dreaming of Dirty Harry shootouts where they save the day for the flag and all that Hollywood BS.

7. IT'S NOT Going to Stop, with the Current NON Leadership

from Congress and our President.

It appears more than a few in Bloggo world have forgotten Congress is responsible for the health, safety and well being of our nation's people.

It's NOT their job to get re-elected, to "win" elections.

This latest gun rampage again proves we the people are losing. The gun violence/death issue is just one more policy area which never changes-- regardless of who occupies the White House, or who "controls" congress. IMHO, we have a dozen or so critical path issues like this, which the deadbeats in congress continue to ignore.

9. By the time the next elections roll around, it may be possible for many of us to be single issue

single issue voters - for or against gun control and violence training.

Violence training? This:

Computer games are used to teach math and other subjects. Videos are used to illustrate how to do math and other skills. Children learn how to do math from watching videos and playing computer games. Are we to believe that violent computer games, videos, and movies do not teach violence? Are we to believe that children decide to learn math from computer games, but turn off learning when the game involves shooting people? Are we to believe that children and young adults with mental health problems make this type of distinction? In other words, are we fools and idots? Will we continue to brainlessly accept the marketing spin of video and computer game profiteers when they assure us that violent games and videos do not affect behavior?

Oh, you say the people involved have a right to earn a living? Our Constitution is about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, not life, liberty, and the pursuit of money. Violence training materials are certainly as big a public nuisance as organized crime. Stop violence education now!

Possession of movies, videos, and computer games that teach, illustrate, or depict gun violence should be banned. Possession of such should be totally illegal including existing products. In 1933, and for forty years thereafter, personal possession of gold was banned, and citizens were required to trade it in, especially gold coins. We can certainly do the same with violence training materials.

13. The Joe Loserman, errrrr, Lieberman Approach

Sorry, I disagree.

there are millions of people who play violent video games who realize they are GAMES and do not become rampage killers. this is a First Amendment issue that has already been tried-- and failed. so let's not waste time going there again.

THE issue, again, is the deadbeats in congress-- who are bought and sold by the gun lobby (the NRA) and who are now spineless regarding the health and safety of our nation-- they apparently view the increasing carnage as "just the price we pay for having a profitable gun industry in our nation".

FAIL.

11. Marian used to be one of my sheroes.

She's just a brilliant child advocate. Then her son became involved with ALEC and has helped promote some of the worst ed deform legislation that is ruining our public schools. And she has said NOTHING. I had worried she was elderly and dealing with health issues.

I'm glad to see she is weighing in on this. But we need her voice in Congress's ear. And she needs to have a long talk with her ALEC inspired son.

12. To all of the guns rights crowd, if you do what you have always done, you will get what you

always got! That saying is true in this situation, so the question that I have for you is, Is the current situation of a mass shooting a month, and all of the other gun deaths that occur every year, acceptable to you?
