Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Sat Dec 15, 2012, 11:50 PM

A friend of mine says if we turn in our guns the criminals would have a field day.

I suggested that we start removing guns. He said the law abiding person would turn theirs in but Criminals would not and would have a field day shooting people.

Your thoughts on this.

1. Stupid argument.

The reason that criminals use guns is that they can get them and steal them with impunity.

2. The first step is not to require a gun turn in.

The first step is to shut down manufacture, importation and sale.

Together with shutting down all broadcast advertising of firearms, which I am increasingly seeing.

We'll need to shut down illegal smuggling of firearms.

It's worked well to stop drugs from being brought in.

yet there is plenty of heroine and cocaine. Guns are made globally - if drugs by the pallet load are smuggled into America then so will guns.

10. I think home invasions and burglary would become more common.

With an attendant rise in assaults, sexual assaults, and murders.

Guns are not generally the motive for criminals, they are the tools to commit the crimes they seek to accomplish.

Since law-abiding people don't commit many crimes with guns, removing their guns will not really change the crime rate.

Guess which one I was.

At Sun Dec 16, 2012, 11:03 AM an alert was sent on the following post:

Your friend is an idiot.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=1997720

REASON FOR ALERT:

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See Community Standards.)

ALERTER'S COMMENTS:

ZoeIsRight has been posting like this for several days. Some have been cancelled, and this one does too. Over the top in language and is the kind of thing that helps make DU suck

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Sun Dec 16, 2012, 11:14 AM, and the Jury voted 3-3 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Talking this about about canards and friends is acceptable. If said of the poster, would be unacceptable.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT and said: Language like this is not acceptable toward another DU member.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: He's not saying a DUer is an idiot, he's saying the friend he's talking about is. Oh wait... I get it! There's no "friend!" It's the OP himself who's spouting that RW talking point! So clever, MassedPole. NOT.
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

16. Every other first-world nation has much tighter gun laws and far less homicide.

There is no statistical evidence at all that an armed populace has a deterrent effect on criminals. On the other hand, there is strong evidence that increased gun ownership and gun availability results in increases in both homicide and suicide rates.

Also, criminals tend to be young and have short careers, which means they need to get their guns from somewhere -- they aren't born with a gun in their hand. So that changes in policy which make it more difficult for potential criminals to acquire a gun (e.g. closing the loopholes for background checks, requiring licensing and registration for handguns) will in fact reduce the amount of gun violence.

chance of death or injury than homes that do not. Even with bands of armed criminals roaming the land.

17. I don't know about the criminals having a "field day," but...

..it's should be taken as a given that habitual criminals will not comply with any ban that called for voluntary surrender of guns. It's already illegal for them to possess firearms if they have a felony conviction.

The possible good a ban could do would be to eventual (and I'm talking the VERY long term here) reduce the supply enough to truly have an impact on criminal possession rates. In the meantime, there would indeed be a greater "force disparity" between criminals and citizens. Enough to make it a "field day" for criminals? I very much doubt that...although one reason might be that gun owner compliance would be...sparse.

20. Let me bring you another view from a minority in this country

I teach firearms mostly to GLBTs. They have come to the conclusion that they have to arm themselves for self protection. As group they are under a much higher threat level than most of us. They did not come to this decision lightly. They have learned, often up close and personal of the risk they face.

In the US the individual is the primary person responsible for their safety. The police are never there in real time and are sometimes part of the problem. These are not gun nuts going to bad places and participating in questionable activities, they are just being who they are. Sometimes it follows them home too.

Those who would ban personal weapons clearly have never faced any serious threat, which these people do daily. These same people would also disarm when the threat goes away. When we addressed the issue of violence I see the number of people owning guns for self defense dropping precipitously, and it will be a good thing.

I cannot see how we could leave those kind of people to the predators we know are out there. Could any of us stand over them while they lay bleeding and bashed in the street and say "we took away your protection because you really do not need it"

...but mass murderers account for a tiny percentage of gun-related homicide. Habitual, career criminals do the majority of the killing (by a huge margin).

Like so many gun lovers who have a perpetual wet dream in which he will pull out his six shooter and save the day when it's finally him that faces an armed bad guy. The reality is, statistically, this action movie scenario never actually happens.

27. Most of the mass killings are NOT done by criminals. Reframe the issue. Gun=terror

ban all guns in the streets

(gun owners can keep them in their house but never outside).

collectors hang on walls
hunters use bow and arrow

and any gun in street dealt with harshley once issue is reframed to make guns part of the war on terror.

Tell our friend there is no difference between Oklahoma city 19 kids dead and this
both should be equal in that both are terrorist events
