Morgan Freeman's brilliant take on what happened yesterday: "TURN OFF THE NEWS"

Morgan Freeman's brilliant take on what happened yesterday:

"TURN OFF THE NEWS"

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine?

Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

1. The msm is getting a bit better with this since Aurora

when one of the victim's brothers was so eloquent about keeping the focus on his sister as was the dad of Emilie today. They insist and note that we haven't been subjected to that hideous Aurora killer very much -- I see small improvements but we have far to go to heal the society that's for sure.

3. I don't pay attention to any of their names. I don't think that many people know them.

What turned ME off tonight was hearing Brian Williams on MSNBC say, "The answer? Just get through it." That's what's happened before, and again and again, getting through it and not learning and taking meaningful action to prevent it. There's at least a 2-prong attack necessary: Identifying and treating the mentally ill, and keeping guns away from them; and getting rid of assault rifles once and for all. Just for starters.

He is a nothing more than a pretty face who can read and emote if necessary.

5. Unfortunately, that is what the NRA is pushing

"Don't look at the 38,234,652 ton gorilla in the room - guns - instead, lets talk about mental illness."

The only mental illness they have to address right away is the one where you think you need a gun.

7. This has actually run through my mind a couple of times today

I have to wonder if their knowledge of how much attention these tragedies will garner them, even after death, drives many of the perpetrators of these horrific acts, and if they would be any less likely to carry them out if they knew they wouldn't get much widespread attention.

If someone "just snaps", wouldn't it be more likely that he or she would just kill whoever was closest to them and perhaps a few bystanders, or at worst a slightly larger group of people who had perhaps been tormenting them?

In this case, the guy killed his mother, then drove some distance away to take the lives of large numbers of the most innocent and defenseless among us, a school full of children. That seems deliberate and calculated to create the maximum horror and disgust.

"*victim* of Columbine" should have been a clear give-away.

11. "do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine?"

Yes, Rachel Scott, Daniel Rohrbough, Dave Sanders, Cassie Bernall, Isaiah Shoels, Lauren Townsend... that's just off the top of my head, if I looked it up, other names would be familiar. The media actually did a pretty good job at Columbine on their coverage of the victims. We learned quite a bit about all of them.

I agree that folks should turn off the news if they are feeling upset or overwhelmed by the coverage but I don't blame the media for covering this. It's news. Should they just ignore it? I don't want the media to pick and choose what they think we should hear. I'm not saying the coverage is great but when they find out the actual facts, names of victims and shooter, for example, they should report it.
