It will for those who can empathize and understand the need for something to happen to make this tragedy be the last of its kind, but for gun clutchers, change deniers and greater sociopaths who only care about their right to shoot the moment to act will be ignored.

44. Tonight as our little girl was running around talking about her day and all the things

in her growing toddler universe I looked to her then to my wife and realized how easily it can all change. You can worry about yourself getting sick or having an accident and dying before your time, not having a chance to see your child grow up, but it should never have to come to this kind of obscene mistake where life is taken from so many leaving nothing but questions that may never be answered.

The second amendment was never intended to protect or promote a malignancy called the NRA and their bootlickers in Washington from preventing meaningful gun legislation.

49. That is not true.

If I can admit that we as a nation have to look at our regulations and begin to limit sales and ban certain weapons then you must admit that healthy, sane people do not go around committing acts of mass murder, no more than a gun can act alone without the hand of a human being to wield it.

You can hate guns and gun owners. It is your right to feel however you think you must, but please don't say that "The real problem is guns...end of story."

If all humans disappeared from this planet would the guns continue to go on killing?

We should ban assault weapons and high volume magazines immediately and demand he surrender of every registered example of these types of weapons. We should limit the amount of ammunition an individual may purchase and require them to return spent shell casings in order to purchase more ammo. Also Magnum powered shells should be outlawed along with hollow point and steel jacketed bullets.

If I can admit that, shouldn't we DEMAND as well that our schools are more secure and that our health care system focus more on wellness...and Mental Well Being? The real problem here is that these individuals feel compelled to commit these acts. The guns do not entice or coerce. They are the instruments of destruction but hardly the cause.

2cents.

91. my post is hardly apologetic

I am simply calling for attention toward mental well being. If anything the anti-gun folks have been ghoulishly opportunistic in the past in this regard.
I pointed out that I believe many more regulations should be enacted and that the most dangerous weapons should even be confiscated and yet I am being called a gun apologist for raising the OTHER 800 lb gorilla in the room?
This entire nation is mourning. We are crying four and five times a day. This web forum is for discussion and reflection.
I believe that our major issue at hand is the prevention of more of these heinous acts. More gun control can accomplish a portion of that goal in the short term but only a long term policy of mental wellness promotion will bear the fruit of less anguished human beings seeking to destroy their own kind.
I would also point out that my comment was in reply to an angry absolutist statement that seems out of place in a "mourning thread"...albeit one that uses the word "gun" in the title.
Hypocrisy is hypocrisy even if you agree with the sentiment.

balanced approach to prevention of further atrocities are somehow appropriate?

I didn't notice the request in the title of the thread indicating that it was "mourning only" and no discussion.

Nevermind that my reply was hardly some BS gun apology. Frankly it was the opposite as well as a call for attention to mental health.

This site is notoriously bitchy. For once I thought we might be able to brainstorm and agree that there is a lot of groundwork for us to do but I see that , as usual , it is more desirable to play the holier-than-thou game and pretend that some of us are sadder than some others.

This behavior is bothersome. Grow up.

Get it through your fucking head. Guns kill people. No, put that fucking NRA pamphlet down. I said guns kill people, and I meant it. Anyone with half a brain can look at statistics from countries where they have real gun control, and those half-brainers can come to a very obvious conclusion. Can you?

We have guns. I don't hate people who own guns. I don't hate people who hunt, though I never would. But we need to fix a number of problems and gun ownership and distribution is one of them.

And you are right about addressing mental health, greed, and poverty.

52. Nobody is saying the killer isn't responsible for his actions.

But the car analogy is ridiculous.

We regulate cars. There are safety standards, drivers' training and licensure, speed limits, and many, many laws.

There are no safety standards for gun manufacturing, no owners' training or licensure required, no comprehensive background checks or education about proper storage...

Next it'll be that the laws don't stop drunk drivers or accidents. But without those laws, it'd be far worse. We don't just give up because we can't stop each and every one.

Same with this issue. We won't stop each and every one, but this is epidemic and out of control.

It's multi-faceted and will take a multi-faceted response. But guns are ABSOLUTELY a HUGE part of it.

57. Uhhh...

I hope and assume you are way out on limb trying to make a flawed point. But please do re-read what you just wrote on the web and let us know we don't need to call the police...

That said, I don't think there are many people on this site that literally blame "the gun" for killing these 5-7 year old kids. However, it is a fact that there are certain types of crazies that may be prone to killing people. No utopia will change this fact. Is it your suggestion that we continue to afford these crazy types access to guns?

Am I missing something - is there really a sane, intelligent rationale why we need to allow these weapons to exist in civilian society? Is it really worth the risk that these 5-7 year old kids just paid for with their lives?

For good reason society has decided that people should not be allowed to drive while intoxicated because it endangers everyone. Society has also decided that it is not a good idea to allow people to possess hand grenades, C4, "fully automatic" weapons and the like. Get it now?

66. poor timing and placement for a rhetorical statement.

seriously. 20 young children's life have been ended. Their families lifes are altered forever. Hundreds of kids who were in this school lives are altered forever. I say this as the survivor of a serious assault. We may go on, we may get healthy, but there is never a return to normal. A new "normal" emerges - but it is a very different normal.

In this moment of grief - a rhetorical statement such as this comes off as glib, and frankly dismissive of the tragedy that has just occurred.

Is that the effect you intended with this statement? Having read your posts over the years I doubt that is your meaning. However, in this moment of shared tragedy, that is how it is easily interpreted.

84. If you think anyone is blaming the gun you are badly mistaken. We all blame the shooter but he wont

kill again. The guns will kill and kill again. We understand it's not the guns fault it's those that have easy access to them. It's society's fault that let a gun lobby dictate that we live in fear. Not all gun enthusiasts are crazy, but all the crazies seem to have access to guns. We are a society and we can determine how we live and by what laws we live by. The majority wants more control of guns. It's time we stood up for ourselves.

thread. Go fight your gun battles in some other thread, please. It's inappropriate here.

97. A sick fuck who needs to be removed from this board

I never would have said that before about 2 weeks ago. The Straight Story has been here for a long time, lots of posts under the belt. But for whatever reason, he abandoned empathy when the school shooting happened, and he cares more about death toys than about children. I'm not good with that.

95. If nothing else, you've advertised both your character and your empathy quite plainly.

If nothing else, you've advertised both your character and your empathy quite plainly.

Maybe you could write your little screed on a post-card and send it to the families of the victims, and righteously justify it to all by stating "I'm only making a point..." (albeit quite petulantly, rather like a spoiled school boy who enjoys pretending he's an adult).

I hope the ghouls posting the "this happened because God's not in schools" shit look into this child's eyes and maybe feel a pang of shame.

Doubt it will happen, though.

72. He also mentioned gifts from her heavenly father

and the article noted she would be buried in their native Utah. Thinking they may be mormons - and his reaction is not unlike that of the Amish after the Nickle Mines school shooting a few years ago. There was a movie made about it, showcasing how the Amish community reached out to the family of the man who murdered their children. B rate acting/script, but heartbreaking story.

65. We have an obligation to these beautiful children.

What a hard word to type. CHILDREN! We can't let them die in vain. There have been many senseless killings as of late but this goes beyond senseless. I can't even think of a word for it.

We have to make this the last straw. This HAS TO BE the tragedy that calls for change.

People please, FLOOD your Representatives with calls, letters, and emails demanding that they end their unholy alliance with the NRA and start putting their "Constituents" first. We can not let this become a common place occurrence in America. Land of the free, home of the brave. We should be free enough to go to the movies and send our kids to school without worrying about some maniac killing us and brave enough to stand up and say NO MORE. THIS IS IT!

93. I JUST DON'T GET IT

I typically think I have a few rational views for things, but I have never been so at a loss. Perhaps it's because I have children not much older than these kids. Heck, I don't know, but this breaks my heart. All of these kids gunned down like this.

What is it about schools these psychophucks need to prey on?
