Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Sat Dec 15, 2012, 02:06 PM

MSNBC just reported that this man's mother was a "survivalist" type

concerned with economic collapse and other such ideas. She stockpiled. Explains all the guns. They were talking to the kid's aunt, not sure whether paternal or maternal. She said he was a "good kid."

BTW, a display of weapons found in the school were a total of six, not just those three, and three is three more weapons than I keep in my house. Not everyone thinks a gun is a measure of how tough they are.

96. True courage....

...is to live your life without guns. People who amass guns are cowards. Thousands of people killed every year with guns. Wonder how many peoples lives were saved because someone had a gun. Maybe it happens, but I've never heard of a single incident. I'm sure the lives saved are small compared to he innocent life taken.

George Zimmermans fear caused him to kill someone for no reason at all. Fear kills...and guns make it fast.

But that's just me. I grew up in the suburbs of a big city and I'm Jewish (i.e. no hunting tradition among most American Jews), and I have lived in big cities since I graduated high school. I think I have known three people in my life who own guns.

Different guns have different purposes. I own 7 guns myself. I don't think that makes me a gun nut, I just happen to do different things with guns. I hunt with a 12 gauge shotgun, but when I go skeet shooting I use a 28 guage shotgun, different guns, different purposes.

1 AR type rifle in .223
1 Unknown long gun
1 Glock (caliber unknown)
1 Sig Sauer (Caliber unknown)
2 historical rifles
1 shotgun (type/gauge unknown)

That is a not a survivalist or prepper collection. In fact its not much of a collection at all. Not enough combat or hunting guns, no .22LR, nothing long range.

The media could have this all fouled up...too soon to tell.

My hammer box has about a dozen hammers in it...all for different uses.

It seems like quite a few times, since you're comparing hammers to guns. You must not be much of a carpenter, or do-it-yourselfer, or you would have more than one hammer. Would you use a 28oz waffle headed hammer for driving a few finishing nails, or paneling nails, or would you have a smaller, smooth headed one in the 8 to 12oz range?? Do you know what wooden, or rubber, mallets are used for? Would you try to tear down a house, barn or shed with a framing hammer, or would you use an 8lb sledge hammer??

"I only own one hammer for driving nails.

If you want to kill someone at a distance, you need the telescopic site, if you want to kill lots of people quickly up close, you use your semi-automatic, if you want to sneak up to kill someone you might hide an easy-to-conceal small pistol ..... It's all how you want to kill people, right?

Man, I would hate to live inside the mind of someone like you, who thinks that all guns are for is killing people. Paranoid much?

and how many different jobs do your guns require of you?

Well that depends on whether I'm doing a drive-by shooting, which requires my SKS with the 20 round magazine.... or holding up a liquor store or pharmacy, which the 9mm works well for.... then there's the occasional sniping random motorists while perched in my tree stand overlooking the highway.... my 30.06 with its 4x9 scope works well for this. Oh, and I almost forgot about the occasional hit-job on people who don't pay up for the drugs from the pharmacy robberies.... the shotgun is best for that, can't trace the bullets from those, ya know.

Was that enough to feed your morbid bloodlust, or do you need more?

Now, truth be told, my 30.06 is for deer hunting, which I do on my own property, which is 15 acres out in the sticks. My SKS is for "just because I can Have it", and the shot gun is for home protection. I don't have the 9mm anymore, I sold it.

Shooting someone is too easy...and cowardly! If you're going to kill someone, have enough guts to do it hand to hand, face to face, giving them an equal chance to kill you if you're not strong enough to take them out.

Any more questions?

Seriously. Anytime you read a comment from somebody who doesn't "know anybody who owns a gun" I will guarantee you they live in a high density population.

They forget that America is a large and diverse place. They think every body lives free of danger, without poisonous snakes or rabid animals, that the world is made of democratically dusted froo froo trees, sparkly with love and so their food falls off of them by magic and isn't picked by people who might get bitten by said "non-existent" snakes and rabid skunks, racoons and stray dogs.

There are heavier waffle headed hammers for framing
Medium weight for standard nails and general carpentry
and a tack hammer for finish work.

I also happen to own 3 guns:

A small handgun also inherited from my mother
and a lightweight rifle.

Am I a hammer nut AND a gun nut? Or am I simply somebody who owns a lot of tools?

A framing hammer, two sledge hammers, a roofing hammer, a finish hammer (smooth face), a ball peen hammer, a dead blow hammer filled with lead shot, a rawhide hammer (for leather working), and a carving hammer (a big chunk of wood on a handle). I know I'm leaving out a couple of specialty hammers and duplicates.

At the same time, I have about the same number of guns, for various purposes and conditions- hunting small game, hunting birds, hunting large game long range, historical interest guns, various competitions, target practice, and home/self-defense.

Am I a "hammer" nut, too?

20. You have such a narrow world view that it is hilarious.

Do you even understand what each of those guns are used for?

You don't buy just one gun and it serves all purposes.

Having 5 guns does not make you a gun nut, especially when they are all of different types.

And an AR-15 is PERFECT for a number of uses. I use mine for killing raccoons. The small caliber assures that it will not travel far if I miss. the semi-automatic nature allows me to put multiple rounds in the the menaces. You don't see it because you have a very narrow world view. I feel terribly sorry for you.

30. Killing raccoons? I don't even know where to start here

1.) You kill raccoons? Really? Seriously? You kill raccoons? With an AR-15? WHY are you killing raccoons in the first place and WHY are you using an AR-15?

2.) WTF?

3.) WTF????

My father taught me to shoot when I was a boy. I learned on .45 caliber pistols, .22 rifle, shotguns of all types skeet shooting, a LAW rocket launcher at Quantico, and an M-60 at Quantico. If you need an AR-15 to kill a raccoon you must be either bloodthirsty or blind. I know firearms pretty well, though I do not own one now. My view is quite broad on the subject.

You're the type of guy who sits up in a deer stand with bait and kills a buck from 10 meters with your scoped AR-15 aren't you? Give me a break.

Seriously, these boards are not what I thought they were. I'll stick around, but can anyone recommend some sort of offshoot site of DU where democratic liberals can go and discuss things?

80. You are so ignorant on so many levels it is stunning

First you agree that .223 is a good varmint round in your subject title.

Then you say "You don't NEED it to kill a raccoon". What do you suggest is a better way to kill a pest raccoon....a samurai sword or maybe strangle it with a pair of pantyhose?

Then you say it is an "overpowered weapon". How so? What is the difference between shooting a varmint with a single shot from an AR-15 or a single shot from a bolt action .223? I'll tell you...NONE.

Then you incorrectly assume I have some "zeal for murdering animals." The closest I come to murdering animals is buying some hamburger at the local supermarket.

So there you go. Everything you think and say is wrong based on a profound case of ignorance. Enjoy.

You said

Then you say "You don't NEED it to kill a raccoon". What do you suggest is a better way to kill a pest raccoon....a samurai sword or maybe strangle it with a pair of pantyhose?

No, you use a damn bolt action rifle, hunting rifles, or crossbow, or bow and arrow or any of the dozen weapons that hunters have been killing raccoons with long before Ben Franklin wore coonskin caps! I guess Davy Crockett was useless without an AR-15.

I am in Florida, hunting country, where they hunt things that are a lot scarier than raccoon (like 300 pound wild boar.) These guys packing their bows, shotguns and bolt action rifles would see someone with an AR-15, and think that guy was a wimp!

SO, yes, people may buy many types of guns for many reasons: shotguns for buck and duck, rifles for boar, maybe a nice fiberglass compound bow (aka a real hunter's weapon), but there is no reason anyone needs a gun that was manufactured to kill people, period!

The term Neanderthal comes to mind.

I guess if you hate raccoons enough to kill them with an assault rifle, I'd not want to be anywhere near you ever.

When it's your time I hope they are waiting for you on the other side of the bridge, and not happily.

61. I only kill racoons when they attack my hens, same for possums. Not usually a problem

Because the hens are out in daylight and these predators come out at dusk, but a couple times the coons or possum got into the coop and then we did shoot them. Sadly my buff orpintons were ground sitters, so at least the critters had a good "last meal" beforehand. All my other hens are all smart enough to roost up out of harms way.

but my question would be, isn't a good dog a better alternative? At least the coons will stay away.

I just have a hard time with people (not yourself) that brag about killing raccoons with an AR15. It simply seems cruel and very unsportsmanlike.

Varmint hunting is a means of pest control. This idea is to kill quickly and efficiently and then get back to whatever you were doing.

If the poster is killing racoons to protect is chickens I'm sure he is not spraying a raccoon with 200 rounds from five feet away. He is probably taking one shot from 50 - 200 yards.

Your emotions are running wild based on uninformed and ignorant opinions.

What does anyone need a semi automatic for? Are you telling me that you cannot shoot at raccoon with a simple 22. caliber bolt action rifle like they sell at any WALMART? You need a weapon that was designed to kill people in wartime to shoot a raccoon, and you need to put multiple rounds in the menaces? I know 12 year old kids that are capable of killing those things with bows and arrows, or old fashioned Henry rifles (old west style weapons that have been remade).

If you justify having a military weapon because you want to enjoy pumping rounds of small caliber ammo into raccoon, I feel sorry for you.

41. If you are a cop, she wasn't

You need one service, one backup, onion field insurance and a shotgun. Some departments, urban in particular, also authorize AR-15 type weapons due to the North Hollywood shooting.

If you are not a cop, and you like target shooting...I think you can reasonably have two guns. Competitive shooters have a few more, that is due to the circuit. That means three to four, all different calibers.

A hunter, depends on game...small varmint, you don't need anything beyond a .22. Larger, my opinion the 223 is lousy for deer.

But that is as a reasonable answer as I can come up with.

Home defense, a Remington shotgun, that's it.

69. It seems an odd assortment to me.

From what I have read, so far they have found:
- One AR type rifle
- One unidentified long gun
- 2 historical rifles (Henry, Lee-Enfield)
- Shotgun (type/gauge unspecified)
- Glock (unknown caliber)
- Sig Sauer (unknown caliber)

Ex husband is reported to also have been a shooter.

That is not a gun nut or prepper stash. Not enough combat style weapons and no hunting weapons. Surprising that there is nothing in .22LR. Its not even close to an arsenal.

I wonder if the some of them are legacy from the divorce.

I figure this is more the media is getting wrong and we will have more and hopefully accurate data later.

98. I think we can band together and push back.

Where there is a will there is a way. No school should be a hunting ground again, no mall, no subway train, no building, no where. We need to gather like minded people and press those we know into looking at the realities of the damage caused by this weapons fetish in the nation. That we really do not need to live in fear of one another if we choose a different path. The message needs to go forward that that we are not each other's enemy, but family, neighbors, coworkers, and fellow citizens. On a global scale, we are fellow humans and travelers on this planet. Get back to the basics. The political constructs obscure basic humanity. We take back our integrity, our society, our safety through trust, and we talk to one another again. We stop talking through politicians and through lobbying groups. The quickest way I can think of to pull the plug on big money politics is to take the wind out of their sails through interacting with one another in our own communities. I don't want to turn on the television and find my grandchildren's school in the news one day. This is how I can best impact the greater world, I think.

then you are an even worse addition to this site than I thought you were. You're seriously riding the back of a media interview that said the actual murderer was a good kid, just think about that. Consider where you really want to come down on that.

85. Well played

Have you noticed how one of the victims, the mother, has been turned into a gun nut, a Republican, a wacky survivalist, just to prove a point.

Also it appears there is a certain DU Approved firearm list, anything not on the list automatically makes one suspect.

Disappointing.

94. A victim can also be a wacky Republican gun-nut. They are not mutually exclusive.

58. From the dispatch calls, one of the police from the scene was describing the guns there

And he said there was a rifle and a shotgun. It caught my attention because up to that point I had only heard of two handguns being at the scene.

59. Thankfully the "perfect" suburban myth

is being examined and challenged. The community seems so
perfect. A bucolic setting right out of a Norman Rockwell painting.

Things are never as they appear. If we don't look at ourselves
our communities and our priorities we will never begin to end this.

78. I read just earlier to day she was a collector.

Is it possible MSNBC has an agenda to push on this issue?

(oh man, I hope it hasn't become a hide-able offense to speak ill of MSNBC...guess we'll see)

90. She came from the "Live Free or Die" State before moving to..

CT when Adam was 6 years old.

They like their guns a lot up there in NH. They also have a good amount of republicans. I think in presidential elections that state has voted republican quite a bit more often than Democrat.

128. She sounds like she was spectacularly irresponsible. If she was so concerned

about her son's "mental health", why keep an arsenal around the house? Unbelievable. Unspeakable tragedy that could've been prevented.
