An open source project to shut down the NRA

I have no beef with gun owners. We'll never make guns illegal in this country. We probably even shouldn't. But we can decrease the outsize influence that the NRA has on our politics and maybe allow us to bring the hammer down a bit with some more restrictive gun laws.

How? By making NRA membership such a social stigma that any person accused of it will stammer and hem and haw and deny it with a vehemence reserved for accused sex offenders.

Scrape NRA associated web sites for any member names, articles about members and add those names to a public registry.

Take pictures of NRA bumper stickers and use reverse license lookup to get their names. Put then on the registry.

The point is SHAME. Don't invite these people to your Christmas party. Don't invite them into your house. Don't let your kids play with each other. They must be made untouchables.

11. I agree.

I took the easy way out: I cancelled my membership (a Lifetime Membership gifted to me when I was little) over a decade ago. I got fed up with how the hyper-political fringe took over (LaPierre and his crew...) and turned the organization into little more than a wing of the RNC. Perhaps I should have stuck around to fight that trend...but I just didn't see that as a winnable fight. Gotta pick your battles...

70. correction

No elected official will go after the NRA until it's politically feasible to do so. Those who lost their seats trying sent a message to the rest of the Democrats.

Money (NRA) talks, and people buy the BS propaganda of the corporate lobbyists. If you blame the current Democrats for doing what every official has to do to keep their seat, you're part of the problem because the NEXT person will do the same thing until we attack the cancer of the NRA's political influence.

We need to let them know we support gun control and that we are the majority. that will change things more than trying to get them to stop being scared of the money the NRA uses to tell lies about Democrats.

15. If you contribute to the NRA, you are contributing to an

organization dedicated to electing Republicans to office, nationwide. It is that simple. You are actively supporting the campaigns of Republicans.

Not to mention the fact that your membership information is sold by that organization to people who want to solicit you about political campaigns.

Finally, I will guarantee you that should there ever be a confiscation of firearms in this country, the government will have all of the membership records of the NRA in very short order.

The NRA sucks. It sucks in many ways. It is an arm of the Republican Party. You are a supporter of the Republican Party if you are a member. It is that simple.

All you have to do to get money from the NRA is have a strong pro-second amendment stance and record.

What does it say about so many Democrats that they cannot say that their position is such?

I am a Democrat, and proudly so, but I will never agree with so many on this board about their fantasy of gun control.

You are a donor to Republican candidates and to right-wing lobbying efforts. Take a look at the Board of Directors of the NRA. They're the ones deciding what to support with your money.

I own firearms, too. I could never in my life contribute to the NRA. I am in absolute opposition to their politics. Apparently, that is not of much concern to you. Do you have any idea how many millions were spent by the NRA to campaign against President Obama? Your money went there. Wise up.

And yes, lobbying. To make sure that the second amendment is not infringed.

we need less of all of those things.

As a result of this incident, restrictive new gun laws are a certainty...you might want to consider how you want to support and shape those laws to minimize gun incidents while maintaining a "freedom" rather than get bowled over by the wave of support for a broader ban.

So should the NRA.

Americans do not want more gun laws and this tragedy being exploited by anti-gun crazies will not make any impact.

Because an armed population proficient in the use of weapons is needed to ensure the safety of all of the people, the government cannot make it illegal for people to have and use weapons.

The premise of the importance of an armed population was certainly true in the late 18th century. It may no longer be true, but the proscription on banning weapons is still the law of the land.

68. Here's why this is a foolish undertaking...

(from someone who isn't a member of the NRA,doesn't own a gun and supports stronger gun laws)

The NRA is a reflection of its members: people who DO own guns, belive in their right to (for a variety of reasons) and are concerned enough to join an organization that advocates for those rights. To target the NRA leadership as some stand-alone political group with no links to its membership is as irresponsible as Republicans blaming Pro-Democratic Union Leaders for their political activites, and implyi that Union members needed to be protected from them.

Add to that, shaming the MEMBERS of e NRA would have the same result as Mitt Romney's "47 pct" comments: a backlash from the people you're going to need to have on yoursode if you want to have any realistic chance of chNging the lWs we have today.
